switch007··on Experimental release of GrapheneOS for Pixel 9a
YMMV. I'm on mobile but I think someone maintains a wiki page of compatibility.

Remarkably, Nationwide (UK) runs perfectly even without Google services. (Except it doesn't poll for payment confirmations but that's understandable. They're always fetched when you open the app though. Or it could be my setup). It's actually quite shocking and it speaks to Nationwide as being a decent organisation.

It's also not necessarily a downside. Having your banking app on your phone can be a risk of you often take your phone out in public

The absolute blocker is Google Pay. That isn't supported

Isn't another wild thing here that Apple chooses whether to send it encrypted or not? Sorry, haven't used an iPhone with iMessage, not sure how it works.

Try Signal instead perhaps?

switch007··on Why Companies Don't Fix Bugs
The whole New UI debacle really set the tone and expectations and I don't see them changing. They seem like a different company these days? Maybe I didn't really notice in the past.
switch007··on UK bans fake reviews and sneaky fees
They implied they would screw me up to the maximum amount possible, beyond any cost of the actual repair

Car rental companies, not this one to be fair, are well known for finding hidden and unrecorded damage when you return too

But the company isn't called "Mafia" so I guess my comparison doesn't hold any water right?

switch007··on UK bans fake reviews and sneaky fees
They've been doing that for a good 20 years at least. Might be more common but it's nothing new. I only say that not to correct you but just to say it's pretty common knowledge. It also has to be written on the menu.

They do seem to be getting more reluctant and even sometimes angry when removing it though.

switch007··on The Importance of Fact-Checking
Ah yes that drives me crazy too. Everything is a micro battle to win.

I had this issue with some junior colleagues. I had to point out that it's disrupting and actually quite tiring being interrupted all the time with minor corrections, often wrong or so unbelievably minor. One thought he could demand sources for everything I said no matter the stakes. They ignored context, nuance, caveats etc and just listened to the part they could attempt to easily refute. God I'm exhausted just recounting it

Am I an old fart ..

switch007··on UK bans fake reviews and sneaky fees
It's a common question about new legislation that appears to overlap with existing. AIUI it helps regulators/police etc with charging, as the new legislation can require less burden of proof etc. Happy to be corrected

But there is of course plenty of other political motivation for legislation and I can see what you're saying.

switch007··on UK bans fake reviews and sneaky fees
Car rental companies are the worst because they actually act like the mafia. "It would be a nightmare if something happened to the vehicle...we are forced to charge £1500 for each and every separate piece of damage". Actual quote from an employee of Enterprise while trying to upsell me extra insurance
switch007··on UK bans fake reviews and sneaky fees
Looks somewhat promising. They've given the regulators a bit more power. Time will tell if companies are actually scared of the regulators. And if larger companies just take it as the cost of doing business and smaller companies give up, with the added burden of even more red tape (unfortunate timing with the trade war perhaps.)

The fake reviews part is just political theatre. It would take a multi year investigation by the regulators and probably will lead nowhere. And smaller companies may decide not to advertise their reviews for fear of investigation, so bigger companies will get away with it. Bigger companies are probably excited about this new law

switch007··on Why does Britain feel so poor?
> Being a DIY type, I was appalled at the building standards

Yup. It's no understatement to say a good tradesperson is extremely difficult to find. They all charge the inflated going rate regardless of their skill level, as people are desperate. They often get pretty shiry/nasty if you demand things or want to check their work - to keep you afraid and to accept their very subpar work.

Materials are shockingly terrible across the board too

I've been putting off renovations because I've had so, so many bad experiences with tradespeople in the past.

switch007··on A university president makes a case against cowardice
In the UK we don't discriminate based on citizenship, or even if the protests are political or not !

Protest marches - no wait, the term is less specific: "public processions" - can have restrictions imposed for basically any reason. Restrictions can be imposed if (this is just a selection):

- They basically generate noise

- May cause prolonged disruption of access to any essential goods or any essential service

- May cause the prevention of, or a hindrance that is more than minor to, the carrying out of day-to-day activities

- May cause the prevention of, or a delay that is more than minor to, the delivery of a time-sensitive product to consumers of that product

Not forgetting there are probably 10-20 general Public Order Offences that can be used against a person, such as wilful obstruction of a highway or public nuisance.

Then we also have Serious Disruption Prevention Orders (SDPOs). SDPOs are civil orders that enable courts to place conditions or restrictions on an individual aged over 18 (such as restrictions on where they can go and when) with the aim of preventing them from engaging in protest-related activity that could cause disruption. Breaching an SDPO is a criminal offence.

And the cherry on the cake: by law you must tell the police in writing 6 days before a public march if you're the organiser (which is to say, get the police's permission)

switch007··on Senior Developer Skills in the AI Age
As much as I am still sceptical about AI tools, the past month has been a revolution as a senior dev myself.

I'm blasting through tickets, leaving more time to tutor and help junior colleagues and do refactoring. Guiding them has then been a multiplier, and also a bit of an eye opener about how little real guidance they've been getting up until now. I didn't realise how resource constrained we'd been as a team leading to not enough time guiding and helping them.

I don't trust the tools with writing code very often but they are very good at architecture questions, outputting sample code etc. Supercharged google

As a generalist, I feel less overwhelmed

It's probably been the most enjoyable month at this job.

For the wider audience: though don't take this as GrapheneOS doesn't care about privacy. I'm sure there are reasons (I didn't read all of the linked threads) and it gives you plenty of other protections and tools - eg profiles, ability to disable all network access by app etc
