We really do excel at money laundering. Go UK !
switch007··on People say they’ll pay more for “made in the USA” so we ran a test
£70 on a £100 ticket? Yeah no wonder! They're too poor after paying £100 for a checked bag

Or long haul premium economy which is just absurdly priced now, often 100-200% more than economy.

Oh. Do expand.

switch007··on A $20k electric truck with manual windows and no screens? Meet Slate Auto
Definitely easier and less cognitive overhead when wanting it just open an inch or two!

Rather than remembering the exact right amount of pressure for that mode on the switch

switch007··on The tools I love are made by awful people
Nobody should have to learn anything for themselves, paying with your time is grossly unjust, the world owes them a hassle free operating system

People simply can't have the same expectations of hardware as with Windows. You must select your hardware for Linux support.

They make heroic efforts in supporting a variety of hardware but if you have the choice it's better to use hardware with better support.

There are vendors like System76 and Dell who offer Linux support

Ubuntu has a certified hardware list:

https://ubuntu.com/certified

I'm confused that people think it normal to go to Apple to get an Apple device to run Apple OS, but the idea of going to a Linux vendor to get a Linux laptop to run Linux is a weird idea.

switch007··on Apple and Meta fined millions for breaching EU law
All in agreement behind closed doors with the EU bureaucrats
switch007··on Apple and Meta fined millions for breaching EU law
Not really. If citizens see "fines" and think "whew, they got their just deserts", it's almost worse than no fines.

But the EU is frequently performative, so it doesn't surprise me. It wouldn't surprise me if they agreed in advance with the EU the fines, behind some closed doors.

Nothing less than a billion these days even registers

switch007··on FTC takes action against Uber for deceptive billing and cancellation practices
I'm glad we over here have decent public transport, large non-Uber taxi companies, excellent pre-prepared food in supermarkets with high food standards, sidewalks ...

If Uber banned me it would be the mildest of inconveniences. Every airport has an established taxi company (sure, wouldn't be as cheap but I wouldn't be stood up for 45 minutes to 1 hour at night) and some form of public transport. Each city and town still has established taxi companies. Many takeaways still take orders directly.

The answer isn't to try to make a crappy capitalistic company less crappy by slapping their wrists, it's to provide competition and use it

switch007··on A Map of British Dialects (2023)
> if we can understand one another, what's the problem?

The accent is just being used a heuristic of where you're from, which is the actual judgement. Posh = not from round here.

Northerners are famously insular and protective of their communities (I love them for it but I think it can go a bit far sometimes)

switch007··on The British sitcom that swept through the Balkans (2023)
Because Jesse Armstrong co created Peep Show too
switch007··on Waiting 100 years for a home isn't a housing crisis, it's a moral collapse
Politicians are landlords and home owners
switch007··on Waiting 100 years for a home isn't a housing crisis, it's a moral collapse
Careful about cheap. Housebuilders were happy to just use plasterboard to separate dwellings in a flat complex for example (or it at least sounds like it. There is zero soundproofing - every sniff, tap, movement etc can be heard)

switch007··on Kagi Assistant is now available to all users
It's easier just to never believe a company whenever they say "unlimited". It almost always goes away. And never ever truly unlimited as they all have a legal caveat to terminate your services for whatever reason whenever they like
switch007··on Discord's face scanning age checks 'start of a bigger shift'
> Mandatory biometrics are pure insanity.

Yup someone tell the US government, because visitors can't enter the US without giving biometrics

switch007··on Discord's face scanning age checks 'start of a bigger shift'
This will definitely just apply to social media and the situation won't be abused by other companies even if they have no legal requirement, absolutely not, no sir.
switch007··on Discord's face scanning age checks 'start of a bigger shift'
It won't happen. The police are using it in meatspace. It will become the norm all over the UK.

ARR is an industry standard! It's an important metric! Our investors are only interested in that figure!

Quick, look over there!

switch007··on Jellyfin as a Spotify alternative
Rclone is a great tool but it is not really a complete backup tool. Ie no snapshots.

You can use it to sync local snapshots or to a destination that does snapshots for example

Borg/restic are more complete solutions

switch007··on Jellyfin as a Spotify alternative
There are good options. Borg, rsync.net with zfs send/recv. Storage boxes from Hetzner

Hard to make a particular recommendation as backing up to the cloud is a popular option but depends on your upload speed and rate of data change. And depends how much you're willing to spend for what tradeoff

switch007··on How the U.S. became a science superpower
I feel most people have absolutely no idea that the US had its very large boot in the UK's face with our face in the mud for much of the post WW2 period, and still has. We had to dance exactly to their tune.

It annoys me no end to read so many comments to the effect of "why didn't they just pull themselves up by their bootstraps?". Not that I'm saying there were not any economic failures by various British governments over the years.

Honestly, so many Americans have no idea about their country's foreign policy. I guess you have to be on the receiving end of their short stick to understand

switch007··on Experimental release of GrapheneOS for Pixel 9a

switch007··on Experimental release of GrapheneOS for Pixel 9a
Great thanks for linking! I'm sleep deprived and was being lazy.

Awesome to read the support chat from nationwide saying it's explicitly supported. I figured as it works so well.

They're a very decent building society/bank if anyone is looking for a new one!

switch007··on Experimental release of GrapheneOS for Pixel 9a
> [backup]...which uses the device-to-device mode

That's a very recent feature, isn't it?

> They can explicitly exclude data from device-to-device backups

Curious how many apps abuse that for purposes beyond the original intention? The big/popular apps etc? Ie what will be the real world experience despite this new feature
