Why didn’t you ask an llm if it was bothering you? It would have solved this easily as well
swishman··on LLMs reward expertise
You're just talking semantics. To me if I read text that helps me understand something, that's an explanation. The black box it comes from is irrelevant.

LLMs do learn, understand, and make judgments. You're just pushing back on the underlying mechanism, which instead of reason/sentience is instead statistics and weights. I'd call that intelligence but I don't really care if you want to call it something else.

It explained something to me today. So your point is disproven. What is intelligence then if not explaining things. They can be intelligent without consciousness if that’s what you mean
swishman··on Coldcard's $38M (so far) exploit shakes faith in self-custody
This is really bad. This is going to set bitcoin back years.. if it ever comes back. There really is no point and no real use case for it outside of crime. Unless the whole world order collapses in which case we'll have bigger problems..

Yeah the UI is insanely bad. It’s a classic case of open source bloat. There is literally a button to “open random file” which just made me laugh…
swishman··on Your 'app' could have been a webpage (so I fixed it for you)
A web app is limited. Even if it loads fast, it feels clunky. Apps using native components have a much higher ceiling. Users don't care what tech is underneath
swishman··on Your 'app' could have been a webpage (so I fixed it for you)
For sure, and these apps feel bad. I notice instantly. But they manage local storage, caching, and sessions much better than a PWA anyway

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills reading these comments. Apps are clearly better for end users.

HTML and css is SUPER slow. It doesn't feel native, it doesn't feel good to use.

You also get so many weird glitches with state refreshing, sessions being cleared, log in not persisting.

Has anyone here actually used a PWA? You can feel that it's slow and clunky. Apps feel SO much better with the native UI, pre-downloaded, much faster etc.

Didn’t it find a bunch of 30 year old vulnerabilities already? What more proof do you need
swishman··on Show HN: Chat with LLMs on Your Kindle
This is really cool. It seems to me LLMs and books are a match made in heaven. An LLM query is more useful than a google search for most text. Would be cool to see this more deeply integrated, in a koreader extension or something
swishman··on DeepSeek-R1: Incentivizing Reasoning Capability in LLMs via RL
What’s a good sci fi book about that?
swishman··on Ask HN: SWEs how do you future-proof your career in light of LLMs?
They have automated trains..

The arrogance of comments like this is amazing.

I think it's an interesting psychological phenomenon similar to virtue signalling. Here you are signalling to the programmer in-group how good of a programmer you are. The more dismissive you are the better you look. Anyone worried about it reveals themself as a bad coder.

It's a luxury belief, and the better LLMs get the better you look by dismissing them.

swishman··on Dear OAuth Providers
You have to verify access to the email with a code to do the merge. That solves your issue

Use LLMs. Claude could generate a full course plan and execute it

Really clever how they use it for the emoji reactions :)

I agree with you but take it further, what's the point of different spaces? Just put all apps to full screen size (not "fullscreen") on the first screen and alt tab instantly
swishman··on I have 218 browser tabs open
Too many tabs is overwhelming. I know for myself when the tab count gets high it's a sign that my mind is cluttered, I'm unfocused, and I need to prune and centre myself again. Bookmarks are one way, but I mainly just use the search bar directly for history. Things to read later are put into Pocket or linked in Obsidian notes or somewhere more relevant.
