swinglock··on DDoS Botnet Aisuru Blankets US ISPs in Record DDoS
In mobile networks it's usually a single device.

You should block the whole /64, at least. It's often a single host. It's often but not always a single host, that's standardized.
swinglock··on German government comes out against Chat Control
It's working. It will not be settled.
swinglock··on I spent the day teaching seniors how to use an iPhone
> There were too many apps; all they wanted was the phone app, but it doesn’t default to the keypad, which was too much for them to find.

Then why buy an iPhone? There are phones designed for seniors that do just that. You don't need to pay 10-30x more for functionality you don't need and can't understand. Buy a Doro if you just want to call.

swinglock··on Microsoft allows use of personal Microsoft 365 subscriptions at work
They previously renamed Remote Desktop to Windows App.
swinglock··on Bcachefs removed from the mainline kernel
Though it's rich coming from a kernel lacking a better filesystem of its own.
swinglock··on KDE is now my favorite desktop
I had the same experience. I only remembered KDE being the the ugly, sluggish, buggy one that reminds me of Windows but cheaper. That must have been two decades ago now. I've never considered looking at it again. But then I got it pre-installed with the Deck, had issues with my computer, plugged it in to the monitor as a backup, and I like it.
swinglock··on ChatControl update: blocking minority held but Denmark is moving forward anyway
They are socialists. It's not a slur.
swinglock··on ChatControl update: blocking minority held but Denmark is moving forward anyway
You sure know a lot about socialism and words, for someone that doesn't know that these social democrats are called so because it's literally the name of their parties.
swinglock··on The treasury is expanding the Patriot Act to attack Bitcoin self custody
Being able to transact is the point of it all. If practical use is not possible that makes it useless and that makes it worthless.
swinglock··on Why our website looks like an operating system
Yet both ctrl+click and vimium mostly work as expected. That's good.
swinglock··on Apple Debuts iPhone 17
Not iPhones anyway, that's for sure. Not even used. Maybe if it's dodgy.

swinglock··on I am giving up on Intel and have bought an AMD Ryzen 9950X3D
Excellent point. It's a shame and a travesty that data integrity is still mostly locked away inside servers, leaving most other computing devices effectively toys, the early prototype demo thing but then never finished and sold forever at inflated prices.

I wish AMD would make ECC a properly advertised feature with clear motherboard support. At least DDR5 has some level of ECC.

swinglock··on I am giving up on Intel and have bought an AMD Ryzen 9950X3D
Then all your desktop CPUs were defective.

Besides AMD CPUs of the early 2000s going up in smokes without working cooling, they all throttle before they become temporarily or permanently unstable. Otherwise they are bad.

I've never had a desktop part fail due to max temperatures, but I don't think I've owned one that advertises nor allows itself to reach or remain at 100c or higher.

If someone sells a CPU that's specified to work at 100 or 110 degrees and it doesn't then it's either defective or fraudulent, no excuses.

The text clearly explains all of this.
swinglock··on Seedbox Lite: A lightweight torrent streaming app with instant playback
A seeder is a peer which is serving a complete a set of all files. Peers which are not seeds also uploads, and this is not called seeding.
swinglock··on Seedbox Lite: A lightweight torrent streaming app with instant playback
If a torrent is already well seeded then downloading in random order isn't really a problem because there are already multiple complete copies out there. If it isn't, then the streaming client will likely receive less data from non-streaming peers due to the data it can offer being less rare and desirable, given several peers in the swarm downloads in sequence. That makes them all even less likely to be able to stream without pausing for buffering when there's not already a lot of capacity. So it probably works itself out alright.

It still improves the latency situation.
swinglock··on Microsoft's latest Windows 11 24H2 update breaks SSDs/HDDs, may corrupt data
Thanks, now I see.

My point is various drives are bad and causes issues not only with Windows, be it with some or all firmwares from the manufacturer. Among them the only specific drive mentioned in the article. If WD advertises this mode then it ought to work.

swinglock··on Microsoft's latest Windows 11 24H2 update breaks SSDs/HDDs, may corrupt data
Who can say until the dust has settled? My bet is on defective hardware. Maybe they can patch the firmware, or Microsoft (and Linux!) add workarounds in the kernel. But just because a kernel might do such a thing does not make it at fault when it didn't. At least not before the problem makes itself known.

This could just as well as a bug, be the Windows kernel now being better optimized to take advantage of fast storage media. Perhaps the software cache, scheduling, and what not became a bottleneck, and they fixed that. Unless it's part of the NVMe standard or what have you that the OS IO scheduler should not attempt writing "too fast", it's hard to blame it in good faith.

swinglock··on Microsoft's latest Windows 11 24H2 update breaks SSDs/HDDs, may corrupt data
I think you misunderstood that. Configuring your filesystem to use a specific sector size (or whatever term is used for various file systems) does not modify the disk firmware. I'm not seeing it anyway.

swinglock··on LL3M: Large Language 3D Modelers
Looks like a fun toy. That can already be useful. I'm thinking of games that don't even have to leave a prototype stage, e.g. Roblox, or actually just for better prototyping. Even if it can't produce anything sufficiently good yet (depends on the game and audience, look at Minecraft), if it's fun tinker with that's enough to be useful. If it improves that will certainly be more exciting but it already looks useful.

swinglock··on Modos Paper Monitor – Open-hardware e-paper monitor and dev kit
Damn shame, because otherwise they look brilliant, I would have wanted one. Thanks for the warning.
swinglock··on Modos Paper Monitor – Open-hardware e-paper monitor and dev kit
I don't require it myself but that's a concern, it's nice to have. Maybe someone can build an editor that uses different fonts within one file instead of different colors. Could be something out there for color blind folks already, though seeing no colors at all is unusual. But e-ink has grayscales so you could at least make comments a bit lighter, I think I'd be happy with that.
swinglock··on Modos Paper Monitor – Open-hardware e-paper monitor and dev kit
It looks amazing for e-ink. You'd probably don't want this for video anyway, besides it's not even in color. I'm impressed that it works at all. For a lot of work though it could be amazing, depending on your environment.

Say you'd want to pop outside in the nice weather to do some programming. You quickly find why that wasn't as glamorous as you expected. But if you had a laptop with such a screen I would expect it to work great.

Unreal Superhero 3! I'm also fond of the ORiON Nero tracks for some reason. Also dubmood.
swinglock··on Fast
Speed is the most fundamental feature. Otherwise we could do everything by hand and need no computers.
