swiley··on Raspberry Pi Build HAT – Controls Lego Technic motors and sensors
IMO: It's slightly easier for small children to learn to program than adults. I'd imagine anyone here shouldn't have an issue but saying a kid gets it isn't quite right.
swiley··on GitLab now worth twice what Microsoft paid for GitHub
You don't have to though, that's what makes it so great. Just push with ssh to a directory under /var/www and you're good to go.
swiley··on Hubble finds evidence of persistent water vapor in one hemisphere of Europa
Meh, we've put plenty of various kinds of nuclear reactors in space.
swiley··on Most comments that people post on my videos disappear [video]
Youtube has been using their platform to openly manipulate people's ideas since 2010 (it started as a tool to slow ISIS, but now you can get your comment deleted for mocking the CCP even in the US.) Use PeerTube, Odyssey, or Bitchute instead.
swiley··on More Americans are considering retirement
This exactly, after looking for my first job I feel like I'm always going to need a backup pan that can be Sustainable with very long periods of no income. The upside to having that in place means the minimum I need to retire is very low. I'm pretty pissed that everything seems to be blowing up this year because my 401k is just about there.
swiley··on PinePhone Pro Announced
Lightweight X11 Desktops like Fluxbox or FVWM work pretty well on the Pinephone, I'm posting from Fluxbox right now infact.

Also the main bottleneck is really the slow RAM and not the CPU.

swiley··on PinePhone Pro Announced
I've been daily driving a Pinephone since 2020. There's a lot of stuff that doesn't work, when it's bad enough I deal with it.
swiley··on PinePhone Pro Announced
I've been using a Pinephone on At&t's network since August last year.
swiley··on Apple fires leader of AppleToo movement
HN as a whole only very recently started to "beat" on Apple. Before 2021 it was a lot of "well maybe there are two sides to Apple curb stomping both devs and users."
swiley··on Microsoft Edge Beta for Linux
Flatpack will be the death of Linux's software ecosystem.
swiley··on O&O ShutUp10++ – Free anti-spy tool for Windows 10, 11
That's illegal IIRC.
swiley··on Graph of Keybase commits pre and post Zoom acquisition
Keybase had one of the few centralized chat apps I didn't hate.

It's all such a shame but I guess that's why I stay away from centralized chat services.

swiley··on It's weird that most of “Hacker” news is dominated by business news
It's PG's toy forum for the CEOs he's investing in. Of course it's dominated by business news.
swiley··on Apple rejects developer's horoscope app, says App Store has enough
If you don't like too many choices then just stop looking. Why does everyone else on the platform have to suffer for you?
swiley··on Doctors Caucus Letter Urging CDC to Acknowledge Covid-19 Natural Immunity
Nothing the federal government is doing now appears to be motivated by public health concerns.
swiley··on Firefox Now Sends Your Address Bar Keystrokes to Mozilla
I don't fucking care if this can be disabled. It's a shit default and the people at Mozilla should personally feel bad it shipped.
swiley··on New York City to Phase Out Its Gifted and Talented Program
It's almost like you can be racist to anyone.
swiley··on New York City to Phase Out Its Gifted and Talented Program
>Math promotes white nationalism

Jesus they've completely lost their minds!

swiley··on Tesla’s headquarters will move to Austin
For anyone else I'd be skeptical.
swiley··on AT&T is partly responsible for rise of One America News Network, report alleges
Like the "mostly peaceful protests that don't spread covid" burning down my home town?
swiley··on AT&T is partly responsible for rise of One America News Network, report alleges
There's plenty of factless garbage reporting on CNN.
swiley··on Facebook Political Problems
If you're talking about the division in the US: that comes from being authoritarian not from being connected. Disagreement isn't a problem when you're not forcing your ideas on eachother.
swiley··on We need to take CO2 out of the sky
You'd want to reduce it and convert it to some organic solid. When that becomes remotely economical it will likely compete with crypto mining as a use for spare electrical power and won't need further incentives.
swiley··on Life's better together when you avoid Windows 11
Windows is rapidly heading to where iOS is. The TPM requirement isn't a trivial thing.
swiley··on Tab Unloading in Firefox 93
Bookmarks have limitations but I really think the issues most people have are not forming good habits.
swiley··on Tab Unloading in Firefox 93
This is what I'm planning for my browser; the web engine will serialize a continuation of sorts that you can load into new instances and mutate in eg cli tools or another computer. Still chugging through basic features like js for now though.
swiley··on Facebook Whistleblower Leaks Thousands of Pages of Incriminating Internal Docs
We'll see how much longer the states accept that for.
swiley··on Show HN: Sixel-tmux displays graphics even if your terminal has no Sixel support
Didn't Kitty add opt-out telemetry recently? Either way Xterm works very well.
swiley··on Why Are Americans Still–Still –Wearing Cloth Masks?
Few people where I live (DC suburb) are still wearing masks outside the metro and other government run buildings.
swiley··on FCC plans to rein in “gateway” carriers that bring foreign robocalls to US
I use a Canadian VOIP service with an American number. I'll be a little pissed if this breaks that.
