sweetbacon··on Instabridge has acquired Nova Launcher
This is very good to know! I am currently setting up my old pixel 6 to be a permanent Google home terminal. I was thinking about trying Lawnchair, now I'm not so sure.
sweetbacon··on Failed Soviet Venus lander Kosmos 482 crashes to Earth after 53 years in orbit
wow that's an old movie call back I hadn't thought about in years. I loved the whole sub-plot of the repercussions of being able to record and replay ones dreams.

I've never used little snitch but I'm betting Simplewall is what you probably want on Windows.
sweetbacon··on A Little History of the Anchovy
Bagna Cauda! I went down the rabbit hole a few winters back trying to perfect that dip and it was awesome. Never "perfected" of course, but I got close enough to really enjoy the recipe. Paired well with the simple dish of olive oil packed tuna, spaghetti, heavy butter and some added capers. So good and very easy to whip up.
sweetbacon··on This is a teenager
Yes I saw this on a few "screens" and it really confused me at first. They flashy visuals detract from the message in a variety of ways.
sweetbacon··on Sora: Creating video from text
Certain interests are already fabricating voices in political robocalls in New Hampshire. I chill at what the US will see as we approach the Presidential election this fall. Then again, maybe it will give us an early taste to better prepare for what is to come.
sweetbacon··on Fear that AI could one day destroy humanity may have led to Sam Altman's ouster
Might as well throw caffeine (coffee in particular) into that barrel as well if we are talking about addictive substance many of us casually use daily.
sweetbacon··on The History of Windows 95
wow that's a name I've not heard of in a while. Didn't they release Back Orifice and other butt name related, ahem, "remote management" tools?
sweetbacon··on KGB Defector Yuri Bezmenov 1985 Interview – Idealogical Subversion
Absolutely. As s teen in the 80s I was shocked the USSR collapsed as everything around me made them out to be this huge Russian bear that could kill us at any moment. Granted I was in the Midwest then away from 24h news cycle, and much closer to missile silos and military bases so perhaps that made a difference.
sweetbacon··on Doom the Way It Was Meant to Be Played – v1.1 Multi-Monitor [video]
Yeah the 6d was crazy to get used to. I sometimes wonder if that's why I had pretty good VR legs from the get go with the OG vive.
sweetbacon··on What is it like to have a brain? Ways of looking at consciousness
I feel like yes, or at least have a new name. Nature seems to love emergence at different levels, with little clear delineation beween, and very different rules in between (particles to elements, elements to chemistry, etc).
sweetbacon··on “When It Rains, It Pours”: The Morton Salt Girl
re: "bucket list" well I've learned something interesting today. I was solidly in the latter camp.
sweetbacon··on I hacked an office telephone to play Doom
The Commodore/Amiga meetings at my local mall every Sunday afternoon in the 80s are the most entertaining and instructive time I can remember from my youth. Quite literally changed my life looking back on them!
sweetbacon··on When we lose weight, where does it go?
This was my first thought as well. Embarrassing to admit that I didn't realize this until I was told it in my twenties and I never looked at trees the same way again!
sweetbacon··on Professional sporting events increase seasonal influenza mortality in US cities
Until it eats that bug or mouse that slid into the domicile in winter, or escapes outside by accident, etc.
sweetbacon··on Chloroquine has shown apparent efficacy in treatment of Covid-19
I volunteer.
sweetbacon··on Federal safety official slams Tesla, regulators for misuse of its Autopilot tech
I was wondering, as I use EyeSight on my Outback and it seems to detect plenty of stationary and odd shaped objects (like an old, empty flatbed semi with broken tail lights) which I didn't expect it to.
sweetbacon··on Human speech may have a universal transmission rate: 39 bits per second
As a slow walker I respectfully disagree on the energy to slow down vs speed up! Concentration may be equal however. I get absolutely exhausted keeping up with you fast walkers. :)
sweetbacon··on How to Remember
> discussing or (even better) trying to teach it to someone else is extremely effective.

Whenever I have to learn a new OS, system, tool, programming language, etc: if I have trouble with it, I just write up a training manual as if I were also tasked with teaching others. What I end up with is a customized courseware for just me that I can refer back to at any time. Time consuming, but very effective for me.

sweetbacon··on Synergy-core: Open source core of Synergy, the keyboard and mouse sharing tool
I too use MWB and worry about it being old and not updated. Anyone aware of problems we should know about?
sweetbacon··on 82-Year-Old Japanese Woman Finds Success in Coding
I find lots of players in Overwatch are surprised to find I'm 46 with an above average SR whenever it comes up. Though I typically don't snipe, I seem to still have some twitch reflexes left!
sweetbacon··on “No Man’s Sky” Displayed on the Amiga 1000
re: Art in emerging tech. Though "VR" has arguably been emerging for many years, I do occasionally see glimmers of what we once saw in the past when I load up random apps for the HTC Vive. That community still feels like it produces some very artistic work from time to time.
sweetbacon··on Hacked Together 118 GB Floppy Disk
I remember stacks of zip disks as my backup mechanism <shudder>.
sweetbacon··on Evernote cuts 47 employees and shuts down 3 offices
I hear ya. But how much $$ have they made from us to keep the servers running? Sometimes it feels like my data could vanish at any time... I've started looking into ownCloud and the like lately as I'm just getting tired of offloading critical storage to something that may prove transient.
