swamp_cypress··on Unemployed for 8 months with 10 years experience. How is your job search going?
Middle of last year I got laid off. I just hit up a few friends and got job offers immediately. I was able to delay going back to work for 6 months (the last job paid me out ~20 weeks redundancy, I saved a lot) and just chilled out.

Having friends in the industry helps tremendously.

swamp_cypress··on Binance is fucked
Because someone else will come along and create an exchange that offers ponzi-like interest rates and run you of out of business. Also promising never to gamble with the depositors' funds etc
swamp_cypress··on Rare ‘triple’ La Niña climate event looks likely
First picture in the article show a scene from Brisbane, where I live. And there are a lot of these suburbs. Brisbane is built on a flood-plain.

But the house prices in the low-lying suburbs that were hit hardest are still very strong. And my home insurance has gone up by 30%.

swamp_cypress··on Redbean 2.0 turned into more than a hobby project
"There's no need for a proxy like nginx; redbean is vertically integrated."

Anyone have suggestions for caching? router? Something small and lightweight in the spirit of readbean itself.

swamp_cypress··on A Closer Look at the Lapsus$ Data Extortion Group
If this group can bribe insiders so easily, imagine what a state-level actor can do.
swamp_cypress··on I made a mistake last week and am trying to not get fired. I need help
Whenever I come across risky stuff like this I make a song and dance about it at meetings so when someone (incl. me) trips over it, well, I warned everyone including management. And whenever I am tasked to do it I send message on Teams to make as much noise as possible. Logging into prod environments, into prod databases, running scripts as root etc.

swamp_cypress··on Union Pacific to buy 20 battery-electric locomotives for yard service
I would have thought it was easier to electrify the yard and use pure electric powered prime movers instead.
swamp_cypress··on The Peter Thiel Paradox
He can say and do and present himself as this and that all he likes and everyone will run around hanging off his every word defending this and impugning that. He has money.

Money is power. Power is money.

swamp_cypress··on The Casio employee behind the “Sleng Teng” riddim that revolutionized reggae
Reminds me of the stock beat from the Roland TR-909 as used in Siouxsie and the Banshee's Kiss them for me (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpcNaqkrPm8)

An exercise machine... contacting different ad networks many times per minute 24/7 ... probing my network ... recording our conversations ... adblocker firewall

Throw that trash out

swamp_cypress··on Slackware Linux 15.0 RC3
From the Slackbook (http://www.slackbook.org/html/book.html#PACKAGE-MANAGEMENT): "The truth about pkgtool is not that it doesn't exist, but that it doesn't do any dependency checking."

So, how onerous is package management in Slackware if there is no dependency checking?

swamp_cypress··on On Learning Smalltalk
I use Envy on VA Smalltalk professionally. Coming from Mercurial and SVN, when I first encountered it, I thought "WTF".

Now I regard it as the greatest version control tool I have ever used. (It is also a package manager as well as a build tool). Version control at the method level!
