>If you could convince enough drivers

Good luck with that. If you even tried to convince drivers to do that, they'd scream about a conspiracy to track everyone's movement (beyond the tracking that already exists).

svenkatesh··on New RFS – Breakthrough Technologies
Er... you think you're startup (microcosm), which is glorified forum software, will change "political systems, the structure of them and how populaces engage with them?"

He had enrolled in, and dropped out of, a PhD program for Physics at Stanford by 2002.

From the cited BBC article: "The investigation team also reported, however, that in many other instances the Indian Army had behaved well and protected Muslims.

The backlash was said to have been in response to many years of intimidation and violence against Hindus by the Razakars."

It's clear we each have our biases, and this discussion could go on.

I only brought up the wikipedia article in the first place to show that violence against Muslims resulting from the annex of Hyderabad wasn't unprovoked. Both sides were wrong in some of their actions though.

I'm a bit lost. What genocidal violence was it, that caused the formation of the state of Pakistan?
svenkatesh··on [dead]
Are you referring to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Polo

"After a stalemate in negotiations between the Nizam and India, mass killing and rape of the Hindu population by Razakars, and wary of a hostile independent state in the centre of India, Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Patel decided to annex the state of Hyderabad."

Wow, good thing that genocidal Nizam was forcibly put down...

svenkatesh··on [dead]
Would you care to point out some of the inconsistencies/falsehoods in the article?

>It is much more civilized than many nations and has much of the institutions that make a modern nation. Just that the military and religious extremism

Given that the Pakistani military and ISI control so much of Pakistan's government, is this a worthwhile distinction?

>what about a random software developer with a degree vs one without?

Maybe I'm misinterpreting your question, but the way you phrased it, there's already some survivorship bias -- the ones who don't have a degree but got a job have been through some sort of selection filter; this ignores people who don't have a degree but want to get a job in programming.

I'm replying to myself, but for the curious: FDIC covers bank accounts; SIPC covers securities accounts.

SEC has consumer protection rules for stocks. Even if they're managed by a brokerage, they're yours, even if the brokerage falls into insolvency

Why use this guy's overpriced service when so many cheaper, well-established hosting businesses exist, like OVH's http://www.soyoustart.com/us/offers.xml
svenkatesh··on Goodbye Popcorn Time
That sounds interesting. Do you have a link to more information?
svenkatesh··on Goodbye Popcorn Time
None of what you made makes sense.

Why wouldn't pirates just go back to pirating when the price increases for the service? If pirating with RSS feed + torrent client is so easy, why would they move to the legit service in the first place?

svenkatesh··on Mt. Gox knowingly traded non-existent Bitcoins for two weeks, filing shows
I guess it wouldn't follow your narrative to point out that a few months ago the price was around $1200/BTC.
svenkatesh··on Mt. Gox knowingly traded non-existent Bitcoins for two weeks, filing shows
I have a trading account at Ameritrade (through ThinkorSwim). Cash in your account that is not invested in a security is still FDIC insured.

That's perfectly reasonable. I do that all of the time when I have a hosting issue.

Okay internet tough guy. People say this all the time, but users still went to the SEC when Pirate@40's Ponzi collapsed, instead of meting out justice themselves.

AFAIK no one who has had money stolen in any of the countless bitcoin scams like BMR, Sheep, etc. used vigilante justice, even though many of them threatened to.

Talk is cheap.
