The Chromecast is a small stick that hangs off the hdmi port. It’s not really plausible for it to not fit in a room layout.

The slaughter of farmed animals is a footnote compared to the immense suffering they undergo during their lives. It’s possible to to find farm animals who live more comfortable lives, but only through some effort. If you are eating random meat from a store or restaurant, you’re eating tortured animals.

If someone robbed your home and you recognized them, would you report them to the police?
susijdjdjxa··on Learning at work is work, and we must make space for it
Someone who asks for reduced hours is probably shooting themselves in the foot wrt comp. It suggests you are negotiating against yourself. If you aren’t asking for more money you are leaving money on the table. Just work effectively for 30 hours and nobody is going to know you aren’t working 40. Measurement of productivity in software is very vague.
susijdjdjxa··on Things that are illegal to build in most American cities now
On your second point, I think a few different things are being conflated here. Usually setback rules require empty land between the building and the sidewalk, so they don’t serve to create any buffer between pedestrians and vehicles.

Also, some cities have streets with no setback and no sidewalk, where vehicle through traffic is generally banned. You could debate whether this is a good idea. Personally, I found having the entire street for pedestrian traffic, while occasionally stepping out of the way of a vehicle traveling at a few mph was more comfortable than walking along the sidewalk with vehicles traveling at 30 mph a short distance away.

I think it’s a red herring in areas with expensive housing. If you could save a bit of money with cheaper building codes, the land cost would increase by the same amount, because land is capturing all the surplus.

If you install the security updates, so only the Catalina install is pending, do you still get this UI?
susijdjdjxa··on Ask HN: We are shutting down our startup, I get our code. What now?
It sounds like the investors screwed up by giving away their claim on that IP.
susijdjdjxa··on Ask HN: We are shutting down our startup, I get our code. What now?
I read they had $8M of $11M left, so a big hole to fill for the preferred stock.
susijdjdjxa··on Ask HN: We are shutting down our startup, I get our code. What now?
I read that Imzy raised $11M, so selling the IP for $1M when they shut down seems necessary to recover money for the investors. Honestly it surprises me they could even get that much for a failed company’s code base. Unless you are saying the CEO personally got that cash? That sounds more noteworthy.
susijdjdjxa··on How to Buy a Private Jet
Let’s say you are making a deal worth $100m. Could communicating better improve the value of the deal by 1%? Then it’s not a stretch to spend $100k to get the best communication possible.
susijdjdjxa··on The Lesson to Unlearn
I’m a pretty good engineer, and I’m never going to join any job with a probationary period. It could turn out to be a bad manager or something and I would end up with a messed up resume. Why would I accept some kind of second-class status when Google etc. are willing to hire me with normal employment terms? I think you’d have a serious adverse selection problem if you only hire people who are willing to take such a job.
