I was going to have the helper generate suggestions in a separate window, which could be moved to any monitor or screen. It would make suggestions and autocompletes, and you can chat with it to generate commands etc on the fly.
Maybe I will pick it up again soon.
Here are what the terms mean by the current paradigm of corporate world leadership:
- "responsible ai": does not threaten the security of corporate rule.
- "safety": keeps the corporation safe from liability, and does not give users enough power to threaten the security of corporate rule.
If anyone needs any of the other terms defined, just ask.
These models are capable of significantly more, but only the most responsible members of our society are allowed to use them -- like the CEOs, and submissive engineers bubble wrapped in NDAs. Basically, safe people, who have a vested interest in maintaining the world order or directly work on maintaining it.
Centralized hoarding of the planet's compute power may end up having some very expected consequences.
There is a sacred responsibility implicit in the acquisition of resources. It implicitly says "I know what to do better with these resources than others." To take on that responsibility then do nothing with it, and actually publicize you don't know what to do with it, is disgraceful. As long as there is suffering, there is more work to be done.
Move aside and let people who know what to do take over.
In the past, when people didn't know what to do with resources, the people would very loudly & painfully clawback the misallocated hoards and make better use of them. Recently, a CEO that didn't know what to do with resources & took active part in misusing them returned his misallocation to others.
This kind of misallocation is a universal crime. A life is nothing compared to the magnitude of this crime. Ideas of "ownership" and "it's my money" are irrelevant. The crime stands, and the justice of balance for this crime always comes, one way or another.
Escaping the responsibility of this duty, and the negligence of misusing funds, is easy; sell everything you own and reallocate resources to others who are better able to manage them.
Revolution is the "final" reaction to misallocated funds. It is when a mass of misaligned, foolish resource allocators who collectively lost their way and lack all vision to allocate, hoard most wealth. This misallocation chokes out the society they've hoarded from, like a blood clot, and leads to a death of the society if not addressed.
I would be very scared right now to be part of the group of people who have hoarded resources and mismanaged them, because this planet is on the cusp of a clawback.
Alternatively, if visionary resource allocators are allowed to operate, it brings wealth to everyone. It raises the standards of existence, brings about lasting peace, and makes for a prosperous existence. These visionary allocators are most definitely not in operation in these times, and it shows.
I will dream of a day when this changes. I hope that this change occurs peacefully, and with minimal suffering, even to those who has caused incomprehensible suffering due to their greed.
It shows a total lack of introspection as well as connections with the people, the Earth, and the universe as a whole.
Go eat some psychedelics and travel inside yourself for a while. Listen to what a tree far in a forest has to say. You'll know what to do with your dragon hoard in no time, I guarantee it.
We should be processing spent nuclear reactor fuel and extracting Strontium-90 ( sr-90 ) in mass.
Sr90 is a heavy beta emitters, orders of magnitude more energetic than carbon14, with a 28.8 year half-life. This lower half-life means a higher specific activity, which allows for more practical uses.
Of course, higher energy beta emitters are more dangerous, but we've been playing with fire for a long time now, so that shouldn't stop anyone.
At 10% beta emissions capture, a beta-voltaic device can be built now with sr90 that emits roughly 5w in a form factor slightly larger than a AA battery. With the current price and availability of sr90, this battery would cost around $3 million on raw materials alone.
By increasing the use of nuclear energy and reprocessing fission byproducts, sr90 could be made significantly more plentiful.
If you couple an sr90 betavoltaic with a power reservoir, such as a lithium ion battery, you would drastically increase the lifespan of the li-ion battery and be capable of peak-power outputs greatly in excess of what the sr90 micro generator can provide.
With more developments in betavoltaics, efficiency would likely increase significantly -- beta emissions are electrons, after all, they just need to be captured and utilized. If photons can be capture and used at such a high efficiency in solar panels, you better believe electrons can as well.
The torrent is an example of the system I am describing, not the same system. Torrents cannot work for live streams because the entire content is not hashable yet, so already you have to rethink how it's done. I am talking about adding a p2p layer on top of the existing streaming protocol.
The current streaming model would prioritize broadcasting to high-bandwidth users first. There should be millions of those in a world-scale stream.
Even a fraction of these millions would be enough to reduce Netflix's streaming costs by an order of magnitude. But maybe Netflix isn't interested in saving billions?
With more viewers, the availability of content increases, which reduces load on the centralized servers. This is the property of the system I am talking about, so think backwards from that.
With a livestream, you want the youngest block to take priority. You would use the DHT to manage clients and to manage stale blocks for users catching up.
The youngest block would be broadcast on the p2p network and anyone who is "live" would be prioritizing access to that block.
Torrent clients as they are now handle this case, in reverse; they can prioritize blocks closer the current timestamp to created an uninterrupted stream.
The system I am talking about would likely function at any scale, which is an improvement from Netflix's system, which we know will fail -- because it did.
If you code it to utilize high-bandwidth users upload, the service becomes more available as more users are watching -- not less available.
It becomes less expensive with scale, more available, more stable.
The be more specific, if you encode the video in blocks with each new block hash being broadcast across the network, just managing the overhead of the block order, it should be pretty easy to stream video with boundless scale using a DHT.
Could even give high-bandwidth users a credit based upon how much bandwidth they share.
With a network like what Netflix already has, the seed-boxes would guarantee stability. There would be very little delay for realtime streams, I'd imagine 5 seconds top. This sort of architecture would handle planet-scale streams for breakfast on top of the already existing mechanism.
But then again, I don't get paid $500k+ at a large corp to serve planet scale content, so what do I know.
Elon Musk is a single man. There are a million "Elon Musks" on planet Earth crushed by the oppression of the system here, who weren't fed with a golden spoon of a rich family.
In a society that provided opportunities to people that are unconnected, we would have zero reliance on such personalities.
Simply because the general population lacks the vision to understand this and accepts these sort of hacks as extraordinary, does not make it true.
SpaceX and Tesla would thrive without such narcissistic leaders.
If I ever get the funds I'm building this vehicle for sure, because it is pretty much guaranteed no one else will.
In the event of incidents that result in mass deaths (oil spills, etc), tried as if mass murderers for the board.
CEOs are too often just scapegoats for the evils of a board.
By the provided definition, solar and wind are non-renewable. They are just sun/fusion energy collectors, and the sun is not regenerating its fuel...
...it just has A LOT of it. Sort of like another fuel available to use, called Uranium and Thorium, and every other fissionable radioactive element in the entire universe.
By the time we run out of nuclear fuel, we will be making gravity-confined fusion reactors with shells made of solar panels, aka artificial suns for energy.
"Nuclear is not considered to be a renewable energy source."
Nuclear isn't renewable in the same way directly building your own artificial sun isn't renewable. It is orders of magnitude the better way to produce energy for a large, growing, and thriving society with multi-planetary aspirations. The "renewables" aren't actually. They rely on a sun that has a bit over 4 billion years left, and they put a hard cap on our planetary energy consumption possible without negatively impacting the environment (image a planet covered in solar panels for an extreme).
Nuclear energy is in a different tech tier not far off from the sun itself. The order of magnitude of unleashing energy directly from atoms is the end game of energy production for humans. It allows for space travel to every planet in this solar system and beyond. It allows for thriving colonies on other planets and trade between them. It will allow for an explosive growth in innovation, trade, and economic activity. And, it will open up access to resources orders of magnitude larger than what is possible on Earth, with the asteroid belt alone -- all without harming the Earth's precious ecosystems.
Most importantly, it gives the next generations hope. Hope of a better future, of extreme progress, of something to feel pride in our species for. This is what creates life in human civilization.
We, as a species, can eventually offload ALL manufacturing from Earth to other, ecologically dead planets. Mars is a great candidate for this. And at 1/3 the gravity, activities like drilling into the ground and building large, shielded warehouses will take significantly less energy than Earth.
Energy should be the foundation of currency, not whatever our current currencies foundation is. Energy capacity and usage is the truer measure of a civilization's productivity. The sooner we all realize this, the smoother our planetary transition to the next phase will be.
If curious, there are more "foundational measures" -- computational capacity (cumulative of neurons and artificial compute), and attention (what the compute is targeting), but that's another thought.
The bitcoin economy, however, is a 1st generation system of distilling energy into value. It is the most honest form of value storage humanity has ever encountered and represents a product rarer than anything in the universe. Gold does not hold a candle to the scarcity of bitcoin, and yet bitcoin is more divisible and manageable.
These are neutral aligned systems. How we use them is up to us. Bitcoin, like an electric vehicle, does not care where the electrons come from. It will function either way.
Does your civilization use fossil fuels that poison the population and destroy the planet?
Bitcoin will run using that, and it will exponentially increase consumption.
Does your civilization use nuclear fission and fusion (which includes "renewables" since they are a direct fusion byproduct), that have manageable side effects for exponentially larger clean energy generation compared to anything else?
Bitcoin will run using that, and it will exponentially increase consumption.
Bitcoin is a neutral entity to distill energy into value. It cannot be tampered with like the federal reserve and a world cabal of bankers. You cannot negotiate with it, bail it out, or enrich your friends by sabotaging the ruleset for yourselves.
If your society has a selfish population, then it will be destroyed by the energy it requires to function. It is trivial to use energy sources exponentially more powerful without the destruction. The trouble with those sources is they do not have a "profit" motive, so countless elite will lose their golden spoons, and the synthetically generated "economy" will crash.
In exchange for the "economy" collapsing, the general populace can breathe again, the planet will stabilize, energy consumption can continue to grow exponentially without any harm, and a golden age for all beings will begin in this reality.
But my musings will have to stop here. I can say with certainty: you are someone who hasn't even remotely spent time thinking about and understanding this problem space on a deep level, so it is strange you would comment so confidently. It doesn't matter who you are, how much money you have, what innovations you've conceived and created, how respected you are, none of that matters. You're missing something very big here. If I was you, I would take the time to figure it out.
And truth is, I am not even replying to you. I write this out for the unspeaking and silenced people who are actually paying attention to validate their correct thinking.
Why not just "trust" them instead? You have a contact and you know them, can't you trust them?
This is what "trust but verify" means. It means audit everything you can. Do not really on trust alone.
An entire civilization can be built with this methodology. It would be a much better one than the one we have now.
I don't know if this is your creation or not, but I would really recommend having a running demo before publicizing work. It is a sad reality in software that, no matter how much time and artistry is placed into a work, it needs to be rapidly consumable for it to be properly shared.
Speaking for myself, I have a backlog of at least 50 projects, with at least 5 I jump around actively, while learning foreign languages, hiking, and living life. As much as I want to see a slime mold simulation, if it doesn't run when I check the repo with a demo link that functions on my phone, my curiosity will have to end there.
5 minute later: alright so my curiosity didn't end. It looks like the project is using 'just' for command running (for those unfamiliar, https://github.com/casey/just). It isn't my preferred way to do things but you probably have it already like I do.
20 minutes later: alright so after cloning the repo and running "just demo 512x512" (it needs a resolution), it doesn't run. It uses assert statements so the application crashes when it fails assertions. We are in trouble because it doesn't gracefully select a texture format. I printed what my gpu supports and tried to find a best match.
After that, it doesn't support the requested blend mode, so I switched it to one that my gpu supports.
When making a gpu app, make sure to adapt based upon the capabilities a GPU supports. It isn't much harder to do this, while making it significantly more accessible for anyone using it -- even for fun or experimenting.
While it runs, it doesn't do anything -- likely because it isn't running with the expected texture format and blend modes.
Unfortunately, while I really want to see a slime mold simulation, I have to stop now before I refactor this entire project and make it consumable for anyone curious. Then I will have a working "slime mold simulation" at the end of the day, and I am not sure how helpful that would be to anyone, including myself.
Both these constructs use the "clone" trait to iterate the reference count.
I make primarily concurrent and async applications these days so I use Arc a lot for accessing memory that is very large and shared many places, such as context.
I think the real problem is Rust has a lot of rules (that make sense for safety) that take time to understand and most people aren't patient enough to make good software because of corporate conditioning.
Try going 80mph in the middle of a Wyoming winter with total control, think about what that means a little bit, then tell me what you learned about what a low, multi-thousand lbs center of gravity with independent electric motors means.
Until then, enjoy the fictional world you've created of "right" and "wrong" equipment with rigid definitions. I'll be out in a jungle swinging on a hammock writing code from "impossible" places instead.
You didn't pass this "lucky idiot", friend -- I passed you.
I understand the creator's viewpoint (Helix was made the way he likes it), but I think it would have been better to separate out the editing logic from all the other great, overlapping features.
It would be nice to have a modern, modal text editor that allows a user to utilize an uncompromising vim mode, emacs mode, kakoune mode, or any other custom mode they'd like -- all built in natively. An editor built for everyone should not be opinionated about how one edits.
That along with things like a built in LSP, plugin management, and extensible scripting support (allowing the use of plugins would multiple ecosystems) would be really sweet.
The only time I got stuck was on a sand dune. I had been through rivers, up rocky mountains, middle of deserts, icy cliffs, but sand managed to stop me. A huge lifted truck saw me and got me out with a tow strap around my front tire.
No one would believe or understand the places I went with that car, but I know. Electric drive is just superior, end of story.
I will be waiting for someone to make a rugged, utilitarian all-electric truck or jeep-like offroad vehicle. No touch screens, no extras. Just 4 independent motors with adjustable high-low clearance (4 independent hydraulic lifts would be sweet) and at least 500 miles of range -- or more.
As much range as possible. This lets you use the battery for other purposes -- running power tools, running climate control all night, even cooking with electricity.
My dream is a fully electric off/on road vehicle that can go anywhere, with a foldable 10kw+ solar array for silent charging, totally independent of traditional energy infrastructure.
Can you book slots with TSMC for 3nm chips to put in another device?
Do you have hardware and software patents on obvious design patterns that users like?
There is no choice.
From the reference frame of the object, it falls in real time. From the reference frame of us, all time would pass before it falls in.
In other words, I don't think it would be possible to get any meaningful data from a probe within the next trillion years or so?
A franchise had the capital to make their own restaurant but chose to be subservient to a franchisor instead. That's on them. Owning a business has great rewards, but is supposed to have great risk too.
It is time we brought the risk back. Policy the is cut throat to business is good policy. Businesses should be ravenously competing, failing, and going bankrupt. There should be no bailouts. There should be no patents. It should be survival of the fittest -- as it is for the poorest of society.
If the dealerships don't like it, they should learn advanced engineering and industrial manufacturing, and make their own cars. If they can't, then they should have been let to fail since they couldn't adapt.
