surlyadopter··on An Honest Apology
Narcissists don't feel guilt, only shame

From TLP:

"But I want to change, I want to get better."

Narcissism says: I, me. Never you, them.

No one ever asks me, ever, "I think I'm a narcissist, and I'm worried I'm hurting my family." No one ever asks me, "I think I'm too controlling, I'm trying to subtly manipulate my girlfriend not to notice other people's qualities." No one ever, ever, ever asks me, "I am often consumed by irrational rage, I am unable to feel guilt, only shame, and when I am caught, found out, exposed, I try to break down those around me so they feel worse than I do, so they are too miserable to look down on me."

If that was what they asked, I would tell them them change is within grasp. But.

"So all is lost?"

Describe yourself: your traits, qualities, both good and bad.

Do not use the word "am."

Practice this."

surlyadopter··on Send To Dropbox - Email files to your Dropbox
Yup.
surlyadopter··on Send To Dropbox - Email files to your Dropbox
This is perfect for me because the large institution where I work blocks dropbox.

Now if you could write an app that retrieves dropbox files via email... (or I could just remember to make sure my usb drive has the files mirrored, effort++)

surlyadopter··on Mythbusters experiment goes awry, sends cannonball through two houses
The absolute worst is when before a commercial break they "tease" the result of the experiment, by showing the results!
surlyadopter··on Mythbusters experiment goes awry, sends cannonball through two houses
For a few years, the thing that bugged me the most about the show was the editing. It was being cut and presented like the target demo was a bunch of hyperactive 8 year olds who couldn't be trusted to remember what happened on screen 3 minutes ago. As an adult with an actual attention span it was extremely obnoxious, but I realize I'm probably not their target demo so whatevs.
surlyadopter··on Mythbusters experiment goes awry, sends cannonball through two houses
Just yesterday Kari (one of the Mythbusters) posted pictures on twitter of her standing next to the cannon. They appear to have been removed now though.

This isn't the first time one of their tests has accidentally damaged property, there was an explosion a year ago in a lake bed that was stronger than expected that ended up blowing windows in a nearby town.

surlyadopter··on Dress.me: Because Guys Hate to Shop
Exactly this. The only reason I will buy from Bonobos is because if it doesn't fit(and they seemed to have changed some of their cuts recently so this has been happening a lot) I just send it back (free postage) for a full refund. The only waste here is time.
surlyadopter··on Greplin (YC W10) Grabs $4 Million From Sequoia For Social Search
Last week Greplin gave all(?) of it's beta testers a free upgrade to the premium tier of service. That was a nice touch even though I have not yet found a use for their product.

This is a hilarious take on Tim Ferriss's style.
surlyadopter··on How to remove software cracks and keygens from file hosting sites
"Thankfully for the ISV, torrent use is on the decline. People prefer direct downloads of the full package instead of slower peer-to-peer downloads."

Wishful thinking unfortunately.

surlyadopter··on Mother, Superior?
This post by The Last Psychiatrist is an excellent breakdown of the article (and WHY it was in the WSJ in the first place). http://thelastpsychiatrist.com/2011/01/why_chinese_mothers_a...
surlyadopter··on Akin's Laws of Spacecraft Design
The three keys to keeping a new manned space program affordable and on schedule: 1) No new launch vehicles. 2) No new launch vehicles. 3) Whatever you do, don't decide to develop any new launch vehicles.

Sigh.

surlyadopter··on Netflix Continues To Save the Movie Industry, So Why Do Studios Hate It?
"They should allow Netflix subscribers to view brand new DVD movies on the day they’re released, but on a pay-as-you-watch (or 24 hour “rental”) basis. I would gladly – and I mean delightedly – pay $10 to stream a new movie, even movies I would have no intention of buying on DVD. "

Would people really fork over that much money just to watch a newly released on DVD movie?

Premium single malt Scotch whiskey. Some of my best ideas have come to me while drinking Scotch. Nota bene, some of my worst ideas have come to me when drinking Scotch.
surlyadopter··on The real truth on Wikipedia is in the edits
"I talked about a number of things. I started out talking about Geocities, and how it was a very real thing, a place that I grew up in, and how it was lost too easily."

Geocities was the first digital Iram of the Pillars.

surlyadopter··on Greeks are sure of one thing: they can’t trust their fellow Greeks.
“The Greek people never learned to pay their taxes. And they never did because no one is punished. No one has ever been punished. It’s a cavalier offense—like a gentleman not opening a door for a lady.”

The article makes it clear that for Greece to improve this type of behavior must change. But is it even possible for Greece to do this in the span of say, less than one generation?

surlyadopter··on How a business increased their sales 18 fold by using online promotions
Selling meat products to people who post on the internet is like shooting fish in a barrel, but this is still an impressive use of discounts to attract new customers.

surlyadopter··on The Golden State's War on Itself
Well there you go. Even if we could it probably would not be a good idea (except in the hearts of our states Ron Swansons).
surlyadopter··on The Golden State's War on Itself
Property and sales tax in CA are both very high(varies by county but most are up there). The LA county sales tax is 9.75%! You are right that CA has a lot of potential. The double whammy of decreased revenues from the recession impacted construction industry coupled with the soaring cost of entitlements over the last half decade are probably the two major factors in the states current situation. They are not the ONLY ones, but they are the most signifigant.
surlyadopter··on The Golden State's War on Itself
I believe both entities can declare bankruptcy. There have however been rumblings that if a city were to declare bankruptcy the county and/or state can do something to either block it, or block the judge from invalidating the employment(ie pension) contracts.

Hopefully it won't come to that but a few OC/Inland Empire cities are right on the edge.

surlyadopter··on The Golden State's War on Itself
Great summary of (mostly) how California has screwed itself. This: "California must shift its public priorities away from lavish pensions for bureaucrats and toward the infrastructure critical to reinvigorating the private sector." needs to happen soon or the failure spiral will continue.
surlyadopter··on A new approach to mobile search
Interesting app but I disagree with the "going to Web sites on your phone to find information is a pain" assertion. On the iOS devices I've never found "web searches" that difficult. Am I the only one? I do like the zero-click for information though, so that could be worth it. It is also nice to see DDG's continuing efforts to ensure "private" searches.

Striking a blow against jerk customers who don't pay their bill, I like it.
