suriyaG··on Bun 1.4
I really am curious about the issues that I'm ignoring

twitter was a dumpster fire before and now it is (to me) less of a dumpster fire.

so far it seems like the bun rewrite is going quite well. I haven't found any major issues since the merge despite, robobun being the top committer in the repo.

suriyaG··on Bun 1.4
bun has lesser memory issues, more bug fixes shipped than ever before. same happening across the board with chrome, mozilla etc.

twitter has (irrespective of the political turmoil etc.) purely as a technical product added more users, more features etc.

to me that seems like it worked out fine.

suriyaG··on Bun 1.4
This is awesome.

slightly aside, but I find it worrying that our industry treats a lot of cannon events in stride and don't organize around that idea or to mitigate the risks around that idea.

things that everybody basically just complained but ended up working out fine,

- Bun rust rewrite. - Elon Musk firing 80% of twitter by stack ranking employees by code committed - autocompletion basically just taking over everyone

maybe I'm just taking extremely outlier outcomes. but it is still fascinating to see people complain about how LLMs don't think

suriyaG··on Being ambitious and being a dad
Maybe I just suck at accounting or productivity

but having a child actually rejuvenates me to do more. yes I probably staring at the screen less number of hours per day, becuase I have children. But I wouldn't say I was doing 10X as much as when I was a bachelor. there is only so much effective work you can get done in a day before you're out of ideas and need sleep or break. playing for 2 hours with my kid gets me fresh and kicking no matter how badly my day sucked.

suriyaG··on Corgi kills short-lived website that ranked its female employees
The whole startup ecosystem encourages go all in, crash and burn, go big or go home style actions from all actors involved.

It is fascinating to watch, now that I have a closer view of the table. You're encouraged to take pot shots at each other, get attention at all cost and win big.

it is so easy to lose all humanity in the doubling down on each other and thinking it is all one big frat party. all of us should be guilty to be part of the perversion, but since everybody is involved none of us are.

suriyaG··on Has Llama-3 just killed proprietary AI models?
Zuckerberg's reasoning on AI/ML seemed very justifiable to me in the Dwarkesh podcast

IIRC,

- Having a better model is a competitive advantage in fighting against spam - Better models enables facebook itself to understand their code vulnerabilities, better employee productivity etc. - Being in the frontier of open source, keeps them at an advantage in terms of updates from community

suriyaG··on Killing the Messenger: My Final Days Working at a Disaster
I understand you're trying to simplify every other job out there in a crass way. But,

- How many companies out there are tripling revenue? If a majority of the companies are tripling their revenue YoY is it healthy or cancerous to the economy?

- How many times does an industry "reinvent" itself.

- What use are all other software, without CRUD apps pulling money from the "other" economy into software?

famously, computing got its foothold, __because__ lotus 123 was utilitarian. What I mean by that is, ultimate utility for all software products come from software interacting with the real world somewhere down the line.

it might not be hip or world breaking. But, it is the most important part.

suriyaG··on Daniel Kahneman has died
kahneman was such a fascinating personality. Other than "Thinking fast and slow", I highly recommend "The Undoing Project" by Michael Lewis about Kahneman and Tversky's incredible journey changing the standard economic theory.

Some interesting talks with Daniel Kahneman

- https://replicationindex.com/2017/02/02/reconstruction-of-a-... Kahneman himself reponds in the comment sections to a very critical piece about his work.

suriyaG··on Breaking down tasks
I'm a person who hates lists and plans for personal tasks. But, am learning to love them. Because as I often realize, things get missed in the myriad of things to remember.

The plan to me is just a way of reminding my future self what I thought of as ideal output in the past. Instead of infinitely changing my plans and chasing fireflies

suriyaG··on Mistral Large
Au, is also the chemical symbol for Gold. It's the short form of the latin word Aurum. This is probably, what the authors intentended as shown in the yellow tint in the website. I might be wrong though
suriyaG··on Weaveworks is shutting down
I think, in simpler terms. There's always a Chief Information Security Officer (CISO). But, there's rarely a Chief Productivity Officer. It's usually the CTO et al fighting for dev productivity if any, else nobody just cares and you get impenetrable tarball software
suriyaG··on What We Watched: A Netflix engagement report
I'm not supporting the parent comment. But don't you think we as humans have a penchant for conflating the reel and the real and ending up reinforcing the stereotypes present in the world? If anything, we need less stereotypes. A caricature is fine, But after a certain point it just feels tiresomely pigeonholing into an idea.
suriyaG··on Gemini "duck" demo was not done in realtime or with voice

suriyaG··on Ask HN: What side projects landed you a job?
The repository https://github.com/stephen/airsonos has the code and is surprisingly accessible.
suriyaG··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (December 2023)

  Willing to relocate: Yes
Technologies: Rust, Golang, Python, K8s, Docker, Terraform, MLOps etc
  Résumé/CV: https://suriya.cc/resume.pdf
  Email: sayyampe@andrew.cmu.edu
I've previously worked at early and late stage startups and have worked on scaling services from 100 rpm to 1M rpm. I'm looking for Summer internship 2024 (May - August). Multiple times in my career I've on converting research papers into deployable productionized systems.
suriyaG··on OpenAI's board has fired Sam Altman
apart from the things that my sibling comments are saying. OP just said

>so people put up with his foolishness.

about Ilya. OP just implied, having ideals == being foolish. it is as close to calling a non-profit, wacky.

suriyaG··on Privacy is priceless, but Signal is expensive
I guess, then the question is how real time was the website. Was it as real time as supporting, instant messaging, voice/video calls etc
suriyaG··on Interviews in the Age of AI: Ditch Leetcode – Try Code Reviews Instead
I might have a different take. But, is it not the case that anything more than wiring up high level APIs together, requires understanding a fair amount of DSA? I'm preparing for interviews and I kinda see the value in them.
suriyaG··on I applied to 250 jobs and timed how long each one took
It'll be much more interesting to know how long the "behavior assessment" that you get sent immediately after applying. Having just attended one mind numbing assessment from Citibank, which took more than an hour

suriyaG··on 3x new books added to the Pirate Library Mirror
It is not possible for a single physical book to be read by hundreds of thousands of people, concurrently. an ebook enables this.

I think a more apt example is, if the library started printing the books and giving it out themselves.

suriyaG··on Okta Exposes Passwords in Clear Text for Possible Theft
I'm confused. How is it possible to login directly with the hash? I was under the impression that if you use the hashed password obtained from the DB, then the system will try to match the hash of the hash and would fail because they would be different.
suriyaG··on Tech experts urge Washington to resist crypto industry’s influence
I think, Because startup investment is regulated and not accessible to any average joe. Else, we'd be overrun with conmen trying to make a quick buck. Not that we have less of them now.
suriyaG··on Investors pull $7bn from Tether as stablecoin jitters intensify
Discussion between George Noble and tether CTO Paolo Ardoino https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kp5kv7aENxw

Pretty obvious that it's mostly smokes and mirrors. props to George for asking the right questions

suriyaG··on Netflix’s big power clash and rivalries behind the crash
I agree that your hypothesis is a possibility. But, what type of advantage does identifying as LGBTQ provide that is not in being a heterosexual?
suriyaG··on Show HN: Bionic Reading – Formats text to make it faster to read
10% of all readers find how much increase in reading speed? also, how is the recollection and retainability of the information?
suriyaG··on Hoppscotch: Open-source alternative to Postman
Is this the project that was previously postwoman? Which was discussed here https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21607712
suriyaG··on Do success stories cause false beliefs about success?
Ideas, usually have a strong correlation with failure. Irrespective of the execution. Ideas are the base theory within which the execution revolves around. If the premise itself is wrong then no amount of execution would solve it. Think windows Phone OS, Google+ etc. They were pretty incredibly executed products. But never took off because the base premise that another new OS with new APIs and new everything would get developer attention, killed WPos. There was no space for a facebook clone, irrespective of the integration capabilities and good image quality and that killed G+.

Crazy ideas are crazy because even great execution wouldn't be able to save it. ideas and execution need to be complimentary. Saying ideas don't matter is just as wrong as saying executions don't matter.

suriyaG··on Ask HN: How to optimize your career for happiness?
It's a trade off, I think. When you have responsibility you are sacrificing something to complete that task. so yeah, responsibilities come with a baggage and the baggage are some times painful.
