surement··on Political bias in AI: Where the AI models stand
They agree on immigration, both illegal (border security) and skilled (H1B). They agree on trade policy and tariffs. They agree on public stakes in AI and semiconductor companies. They used to agree on foreign intervention, though Trump 47 less so.
surement··on We’re secretly winning the war on cancer
Universal in what country? In the US I've had two MRIs in the last few years for non urgent things and both were scheduled within less than a week.
surement··on My new deadline: 20 years to give away virtually all my wealth
Your evidence is the most absurd "antitrust" lawsuit in history. What law did they break? Macs come with Safari and Android devices come with Chrome, where's the lawsuits?
surement··on My new deadline: 20 years to give away virtually all my wealth
> by any means necessary

This implies that they got rich by pillaging instead of countless people voluntarily giving them money in exchange for what they offered.

surement··on Generative AI is not replacing jobs or hurting wages at all, say economists
It definitely always works. If your skills become obsolete then it's time to find new ones or stop working.
surement··on Generative AI is not replacing jobs or hurting wages at all, say economists
> Have any of these economists ever tried to scrape by as an entry-level graphic designer/illustrator?

surement··on Canon EF and RF Lenses – All Autofocus Motors
you don't need to bring up trump in a camera thread
surement··on Larry Ellison wants to put all America's data in AI, including DNA
the people with the highest compensation packages are by definition the least replaceable
surement··on A dishwasher can make or break a restaurant (2017)
neither does education, what's your point?
surement··on A dishwasher can make or break a restaurant (2017)
> Definitely under appreciated and under paid, but I learned a ton about working for a living.

a lot of the discussion about wages ignores the value of experience; students pay to spend their days learning but it's somehow unfair for someone to get paid to learn job skills that transfer to other jobs

surement··on Cold brew coffee in 3 minutes using acoustic cavitation
> extreme form of coffee hipsterism

I know a lot of coffee nerds and cold brew is disdained for not extracting enough flavors. This is just someone who never adapted to the world hoping the world will adapt to them.

surement··on Stanford president resigns over manipulated research, will retract 3 papers
> Papers don't establish ground truths in science > it doesn't shake the foundations of science

the comment doesn't say any of that, just that resources are wasted participating to these "conversations"

surement··on Supreme Court strikes down affirmative action in college admissions
> if MIT rejected applicants with better profiles because of the URM checkbox, in some sense they didn't deserve to get in

"better" is subjective and imo anyone who goes on to succeed at the school is as good as the next person; there are lots of other equally arbitrary decisions that go into college admissions

surement··on Supreme Court strikes down affirmative action in college admissions
> I went to MIT, and to this day I wonder how much checking "Hispanic" helped me there and if I "deserved" to go.

the problem with aa is not about people getting in that didn't "deserve" it, it's people getting in who don't have the means to succeed; elite colleges brag about their diverse admissions but don't talk about people who go on to fail when they could've succeeded at less prestigious schools

if you succeeded then you deserved to get in.

surement··on Corporate profits account for almost half the increase in Europe’s inflation
then you know it's not a great article.
surement··on Corporate profits account for almost half the increase in Europe’s inflation
> My personal, uneducated, unverified hypothesis was that companies overcompensate price increases for three main reasons:

profit-maximizing sellers can only increase prices if demand rises, otherwise they will sell fewer units at the higher price (and if they could've made more money selling fewer units at a higher price then we can assume that they were already doing that because they are profit maximizing)

the only way that demand can rise (allowing prices to rise) in unison is if there is more money going around, which is what happens when the money printer goes brr, which it did https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/M1SL

surement··on Corporate profits account for almost half the increase in Europe’s inflation
> To have record-breaking profits means that are markets are record-breakingly inefficient

or more innovative companies captured the market share of less innovative ones, e.g. lockdowns bankrupting brick and mortars in favor of online giants

surement··on Majority of gig economy workers are earning below minimum wage: research
you can flag it
surement··on Haskell in Production: Standard Chartered
> Some niche languages enthusiasts can be very picky and reluctant to work on other languages, and would pick Haskell when a simple python script would be more appropriate.

in my experience, these people also refuse to learn about any software engineering best practices as they are "for OO languages" and "not needed" in haskell

surement··on Chemists tackle the tough challenge of recycling mixed plastics
I get taxing companies for things that cost taxpayers money, but why do this based on recyclability? It seems like more of an economic problem: if recycled plastic costs more than new plastic, then why is it better? Charge companies for packaging that ends up in the landfill instead, otherwise these companies are essentially being subsidized by taxpayers to package things however is more profitable without having to account for that cost.
surement··on How to be a -10x Engineer
> Name all your variables 'data'.

Name a class "Entity" and make everything else derive from it. Write code that can't be deleted, ever.

surement··on How to be a -10x Engineer
basically the 0x engineers the article talks about wrt opportunity cost
surement··on UK: Food inflation rises to 18.2% as it hits highest rate in over 45 years
it's a tax on your bank account, but other assets can increase in value proportionally with inflation
surement··on UK: Food inflation rises to 18.2% as it hits highest rate in over 45 years
there's also "empirical evidence" that minimum wage laws don't lead to unemployment, that doesn't make it true
surement··on UK: Food inflation rises to 18.2% as it hits highest rate in over 45 years
Acting like "food" is a company is absurd, there is a ton of competition and substitution in the market, no one actor has the capacity to influence "food" prices in general. If they did, then were they just being altruistic three years ago by not raising prices?
surement··on Why construction projects always go over budget
like what?
surement··on Why construction projects always go over budget
government agencies are the only ones that get MORE money when they fail to deliver
surement··on Why construction projects always go over budget
> Said lack of funding is the primary cause of the inefficiencies

No, the primary cause is politicians promising things that sound good so that they'll get reelected, because that's the number one thing they care about, not efficiency. On the other hand a private company will only build something that makes economical sense.

surement··on The beginner's guide to overcomplicating coffee
Gross lol. But more seriously, there's nothing "wrong" with liking what you like. The overcomplicating crowd these days is more into catching the complexities of various growing regions and processing methods in light roasts. I've been getting into this kind of stuff lately and I'm loving it but I still also love drinking cups of overroasted coffee loaded with cream and sugar when I go to a diner.
