supperburg··on Making the dislike count private across YouTube
But under your logic a shitty comment is a danger to public health just like a dislike.
supperburg··on When is the revolution in architecture coming?
I recently designed my modest house myself all on paper. I read a pattern language and some other things in preparation. I’m convinced that communities that are nice to live in, even if only in the way they look, must be grown organically so to speak. It must be smaller scale people building the structures and becoming invested in the community. Now all I see are these giant developments that try to simulate that cozy feeling. They get bought immediately from the development company.
supperburg··on Ask HN: Starting a career as a programmer in my mid-40s
Here is the best piece of advice you will find in this thread: don’t get into it. It’s bullshit. The tools are broken. The standards and frameworks are broken. The web is a broken piece of shit. The landscape looks like a schizophrenics sketch pad. It only becomes clear after you get deep enough. Stay away.
supperburg··on GPT-3 is no longer the only game in town
It won’t. You’re wrong.this is the perfect illustration. You think a rock is good therefore AI is good. You’re just unbelievably wrong.
supperburg··on GPT-3 is no longer the only game in town
That’s like if an alien took Mozart as a specimen and then disregarded the human race because this human, while making interesting sounds, does nothing of value. You have to look at the bigger picture.
supperburg··on GPT-3 is no longer the only game in town
I have supported my beliefs on this topic in these threads to the point of exhausting myself. The tools that we use to find these agents are the underpinning of AGI, it’s coming way faster than even most people here appreciate, this development is intrinsically against the interest of human beings. Please stop and think, please.
supperburg··on Ancient Rome’s party town, now buried by the sea
60 minutes also did a segment on this. Good luck getting it because 60 minutes makes it really hard to go back and watch old magazines if they aren’t in the group of segments that they post to YouTube. Even if you pay them money you can’t do it.
supperburg··on The tomato was feared in Europe for more than 200 years (2013)
Our emotional underpinnings motivate everything we do. My step mom is a hoarder. But she’s so smart and well adjusted that I didn’t recognize it until I was an adult because everything is perfectly organized and rationalized. But the core emotional issue of not being able to throw things away is there.

The vast majority of Vietnam soldiers who used heroin overseas did not continue using heroin after coming home. They weren’t using different kinds of heroin, therefore it is the person and not the material.

supperburg··on The tomato was feared in Europe for more than 200 years (2013)
It just shows how little you know. Like I said, you are very ignorant. There are specific biological pathways that are responsible for these major psychiatric illnesses. Many of them are metabolic. And because there are specific and quantifiable biochemical causes for hearing voices for example it’s possible for you to be objectively wrong about the whole thing as you very much are.
supperburg··on The tomato was feared in Europe for more than 200 years (2013)
> That seems too reductive. Find me a person without "emotional / psychiatric problems"(!)

This is objectively wrong. Could you find a person without OCD? No, you couldn’t under your framework because people use these names frivolously and in the context of their own lives. People use PTSD in the same way. Not everyone has these kinds of problems. That is super ignorant of you.

supperburg··on The tomato was feared in Europe for more than 200 years (2013)
This is the old narrative and it’s wrong. Physical addiction is an exceedingly small part of the problem. And most cases of physical addiction are brought on by continued use which is almost always brought on by the cause of addiction which has been shown to be emotional and psychiatric problems.
supperburg··on An intact slave's room found in Pompeii's ruins
Because different stages could have been handled by different teams or contractors.
supperburg··on The tomato was feared in Europe for more than 200 years (2013)
Overconsumption is the symptom of mental health problems, not the cause. The only major class of drug induced mental disorder has to do with people who have a pre-existing condition. But when people can’t stop using drugs, it’s because they have an emotional problem. Most of the Vietnam vets who used heroin overseas stopped using without issue when they came back.
supperburg··on Organ transplant patients may not get dementia
People talk about inflammation vs metabolism. They are linked. Inflammatory signals can turn cellular metabolism up or down.

African sleeping sickness is an infection that results in a person going into a kind of coma. The parasite constantly changes its molecular interface with the host which is supposed to confuse the hosts immune system. This places a huge burden on the immune system and results in the host becoming hungry all the time, despite already being full. These patients will stuff themselves while growing progressively more tired. And eventually they fall asleep permanently. Inflammatory signals slow metabolism or something to that effect and this change in metabolism causes the body to feel as though it’s starved of energy and so the patients feel hunger. Inflammation and metabolism are linked.

A man with schizophrenia was cured after a bone marrow transplant. The New York Times wrote about it recently. Symptoms of age including cognitive decline have been reversed in mice and humans through blood dilution/ blood transfusion probably due to reduction in the concentration of inflammatory molecules in the blood that are produced by ones own body. Inflammation/metabolism is the biggest medical revolution on the horizon. Especially since COVID has made it a grant-worthy topic now and doctors can’t deny that chronic fatigue syndrome is real anymore. It’s funny how all those people who insisted that CFS wasn’t real are now nowhere to be found to answer for their mistake.

supperburg··on University of Florida bars professors from testifying in a voting rights case
I agree but the point is that knowledge of the countries of the world is the most basic sign of education besides reading. The average 18 year old knows even less about science than geography. But geography is important because not knowing it is extremely embarrassing.
supperburg··on University of Florida bars professors from testifying in a voting rights case
Pick a random 18 year old and see if they can point to the country of Argentina on a map. The populace can read but not much else.
supperburg··on Why Do Rich People Love Endurance Sports?
They don’t, only upper middle class people do. And virtually all of them are liberal. And liberals almost always are drawn to hurting themselves in the name of virtue. It goes back to the penitents of 14th century Germany who would flog themselves walking along the streets in order to appease god. I never realized that this was so until I experienced life in a place where people don’t have this inclination at all. This concept of self inflicted pain being good for ones self is at the core of why liberal people are usually upper middle class. It promotes success and excellence. But it is so deep that most people don’t even realize they have it.
supperburg··on Germany debates how to form gender-neutral words out of its gendered language
I can’t imagine something less important. We can’t afford to go to space because people are starving but we can certainly afford to reformulate our entire language?
supperburg··on Architect Resigns in Protest over UCSB Mega-Dorm
Taxing people won’t make housing cheaper, it has nothing to do with the healthcare crisis and it won’t fix political corruption. Limousine liberals such as you are disconnected from reality and think that the solution to everything is to throw money at it.
supperburg··on Pre-industrial workers had a shorter workweek than today's (1991)
I am reading Jean Froissart’s Chronicles. It is a fascinating first hand account of English royalty and wars in the 14th century. I think people should also consider the higher classes in those times because they seem to have worked continuously at killing each other. It’s work none the less.
supperburg··on Pre-industrial workers had a shorter workweek than today's (1991)
Isn’t history supposed to repeat itself and in that way tell us about the future? And isn’t history an insight into human nature and in that way illuminate modern issues?
supperburg··on U.S. house prices are rising exponentially faster than income
Do buildings not wear out? Are buildings not improved?
supperburg··on U.S. house prices are rising exponentially faster than income
If you tax the whole of the delta then real estate development would scrape to a halt. So that obviously won’t work.
supperburg··on Architect Resigns in Protest over UCSB Mega-Dorm
Tax yourself all you want, it won’t solve the problem. The numbers simply don’t work. A wealthy man but not a learned man.
supperburg··on Architect Resigns in Protest over UCSB Mega-Dorm
This place cost 1.5B. If you want to give everyone more space and windows then it’s only going to cost more, and that’s before it’s goes over schedule. This is one dorm building for one college. If you play it through, which you have never done, then you would see that even if we took every penny from the rich we wouldn’t be able to do what you said. And by the way, you are in the top 1% wealth bracket globally, so why don’t you put your money where your mouth is and empty your bank account and send it to a family in Myanmar? Then you will be living the redistribution dream you always blather about.
