superturkey650··on Fake reviews are illegal and subject to big fines under new FTC rules
Ahh, I thought it was a case where they kept the listing the same but started changing the product to a lower quality version or knock-offs.
superturkey650··on Fake reviews are illegal and subject to big fines under new FTC rules
How would Amazon generally know if a product has been switched out with an inferior product on the same listing?

A little example: I’ve used the site for a little over 4 years but don’t usually post or comment. If I do comment, it’s something really specific or to try and help clear a misunderstanding so usually low karma amounts. I regularly participate through flagging and upvotes but only have ~50 karma so I still can’t downvote and will likely never be able to.

Not saying it shouldn’t be this way, but downvotes are heavily biased toward people who regularly post or comment.

superturkey650··on GPT-4's Solution of Egg Balancing Puzzle Convinced Microsoft That AGI Is Closer
That’s interesting. I just played a game with ChatGPT4 and it went smoothly. It gave me the rules, managed the game board, and let me know when I made an invalid move.

I’d assume the same way they determine the state to apply sales tax for, by the customer and not the company.

I'd want it if I could "pin" the the video to a physical space on demand, allowing me to move the video around a room and control its dimensions. Especially if it could stream the content of the videos from a beefy home pc. That would allow me to get rid of all the screens around my apartment with digital version while controlling all of them from the same source.

superturkey650··on Is this the end of social networking?
There aren't any ideas that break the rules though. Just structure, tone, and context of comments/posts.
superturkey650··on Is this the end of social networking?
Those seem to be based around the relationship of the comment to the post it is in rather than any specific idea in the comment itself. As if any comment flagged for those reasons could have the same idea expressed in a relevant post and not be flagged.
superturkey650··on Is this the end of social networking?
No it doesn't. The rules can be based around the effort, structure, and tone of your comments. Not the ideas expressed within them. I think the only "idea" not allowed is asking for violence and I've even seen those allowed.
superturkey650··on Is this the end of social networking?
I can't think of any non-rulebreaking comments that would get you banned just for expressing a distasteful idea. Can you give some examples?
superturkey650··on Former officials say big tech monopoly power is vital to national security
Besides that, the subtitle of the article on Wikipedia is literally “ Violent insurrection after the 2020 presidential election”.
superturkey650··on CA bar says attorney records leaked through database flaw, not hack
Agreed, however if a government official says “These records are confidential, please don’t look at them” and then they leave them on a park bench in front of you, then it is a felony to for you to look at them.

In this case, it would be like going through the UI and trying to access the record and getting denied because of a client side access block, so you make a direct call to the backend instead to retrieve the record. You’re making a perfectly legitimate HTTP request but for something you know you shouldn’t be able to access: illegal.

superturkey650··on How the weak can win – A primer on protracted war
Contrary to Vietnam and Afghanistan, Russia has the ability to take large swathes of territory early, absorb it, and start moving Russians into that territory while continuously sieging major cities.

The Ukrainians will look bad if they attack the Russian citizens that are now occupying them, and the Russian army doesn’t need to convince the local population to join them but instead they can encourage them to evacuate and give them safe passage into the EU.

Eventually the country will be more and more Russian and most of the world will forget about the Ukrainians. We’re just in the initial “rough” stages where it’s the new news item and countries not actually involved in the conflict aren’t bored yet. Once they reach a stable position, they can just wait them out while occupying the majority of the country.

superturkey650··on Good writing is a business advantage
Agreed. Tech has a built-in gatekeeping mechanism due to the steep learning curve most people hit right at the beginning. No one is getting taught the fundamentals in school and it can be very hard to wrap your mind around it at first. Meanwhile, many other skills that are dismissed are ones where we got over the initial hump as children in school and the curve gets steeper much later, once you're trying to become a professional.
superturkey650··on Stripe records user movements on its customers' websites
Why would they not? If someone wants to be able to use a social network, do you really think they wouldn't pay $5/month for something they use as much if not more than Netflix? You can't do it now because other services can undercut you and rely on advertising but there is no reason it couldn't be the standard.
superturkey650··on Stripe records user movements on its customers' websites
It wouldn't be a non-starter if no other site could do the same thing without also charging for a subscription. Services like Facebook, Reddit, and Instagram all provide a service that many people find valuable. Let people pay for it.

superturkey650··on Quadratic Payments: A Primer
How can you do that today? Can you get the equivalent of a receipt from voting?
superturkey650··on Quadratic Payments: A Primer
I think that goes along with what the parent mentioned. If someone can prove how they voted, then Person A can buy Person B's vote and request proof that Person B voted that way. However, if Person B can't prove which way they voted and it is just based off trust then Person B can lie and still vote however they'd like.
superturkey650··on Upgrading Messaging on Android in the U.S. with RCS
That's how I tried to use my Pixel but between losing Hangouts, having the UI changed seemingly randomly (how many different homescreen changes are really necessary?), and the constatn bait and switch of Google releasing core apps and dropping them (Allo and Duo), I gave up. Using Nova for my homescreen helped, and I probably could've stuck to Messages but I would lose the ability to see my messages from my computer. I've had my iPhone going on a year now and haven't needed to look at /r/Apple a single time.
superturkey650··on Upgrading Messaging on Android in the U.S. with RCS
Is there any reason someone couldn't make an sms client that gives the option of encryption assuming the person you are conversing with was using a client following the same encryption protocol? It would require a few automated texts to exchange keys but would allow encrypted communication over sms easily.

I'm guessing there just isn't a big enough market for it given that people are willing to create an account with WhatsApp to get the same thing.

superturkey650··on Upgrading Messaging on Android in the U.S. with RCS
Not the parent, but I recently switched to an iPhone and I'm liking it.

On Android, I was constantly using new Apps, looking at /r/android for release announcements, and getting excited about all the new releases. Then, at some point, I realized I just wanted a phone that works. That's when I switched to Apple. That's not to say my Pixel didn't do everything my iPhone does. It could do it all and in many cases it could even do it better or in a more customized way. But, it also required effort. Effort to learn the new apps, effort to change all the settings, and effort every time Google decided to change something that I thought was already working just fine.

Then I switched to Apple and I realized I didn't want necessarily want to spend all my time learning my phone, I wanted to spent my time USING it. To me, my iPhone is more like an appliance than a new tech gadget. It doesn't necessarily provide you with all the options and capabilities that an Android phone does, but it absolutely nails its core competencies and is very easy to use. I don't spend a single extra second trying to figure out HOW to use it, it just works.

I make web applications from top to bottom, meaning their frontends, backends, and datastores. I enjoy refactoring just as much as creating from scratch, and I know the importance of documentation and good communication. I give back to my community using my skills and am eager to grow with good mentors.

You can still receive a salary, and as far as I know there are no limits on what you can pay yourself. However, you must have a predefined salary and you are audited regularly to ensure there isn't fraud. However, outside of the overhead (salaries, office, servers, etc) any further profits have to be reinvested into the business. This means that if they get 5 million dollars and only spend 4 million, no one gets to take home the extra million. It has to go back into the business.

This is in contrast to for-profit companies where that money can go to the owner (private company), or to shareholders (public company).

The Wikipedia link posted above probably has a better explanation, this is just my understanding due to my SO working at one.

superturkey650··on The Rise of the Electric Scooter
Have you ever measured how fast you walk? I walk a couple miles every morning at an okay pace with my dog and I still average about 17 minutes a mile.
superturkey650··on The Rise of the Electric Scooter
There's a "Lock" button in the app. If you press that, the scooter doesn't allow anyone else to start using it, but you still pay per minute that you aren't using it.

Though if you're in a popular area there is no need, you can just walk a minute or less and find another.

superturkey650··on Google’s GDPR Workaround
Yes, that's why targeted ads shouldn't be a thing unless it's opt-in (not necessarily my opinion but it seems to be the point the parent was making). At that point, to opt-in you can create a google account. Currently though, Google will attempt targeted ads on people without a Google account by trying to identify and track them through other means.

Ideally you would have site-specific or content-specific ads normally and personalized ads if you created an account and chose to opt-in.
