suobset··on Steve Wozniak launches merch store
> Woz still gets invited to the HQ to this day

Isn't Woz technically still an honorary Apple employee, or am I misremembering that?

suobset··on Apple is getting this wrong
They are genuinely holding on to the one minor mishap from Apple that was corrected right after. Either way, grabbing popcorn to see how this plays out in court.
suobset··on Miss the old web? Join us haywood.computer
Well I am on the millennial/Gen Z cusp, and I think the new "old web" is a recreation of the corner of the Internet that puts humans before bots (as opposed to faithfully recreating it). Then again this website feels like it's doing a little too much.
suobset··on GitHub and the crime against software
Codeberg and Gitlab exist though. The problem is the inertia. Tons of repositories in GitHub from way before MS acquired them, which makes most people use GitHub, which makes most software projects choose GitHub.

Heck, GH Stars are used as a vanity metric for a lot of projects.

suobset··on BBEdit 16
Just gonna chime in here to mention I am one of the users who has NOT been here since Classic mac or any sort of olden days (I mean, I was born in 2001; there are people who have used BBEdit longer than I have been alive).

My first experience with BBEdit was around 2020, and I have had a copy of it ever since on a Mac for light editing. My main dev home is JetBrains IDEs, but I find VS Code too heavy for quick text edits. That, and Shell Worksheets are enough of a game changer that it justifies the whole price.

suobset··on Verus is a tool for verifying the correctness of code written in Rust
I just attended a talk at Northeastern (Boston) on Verus, it's genuinely amazing. I have been using it on my own Rust codebases for a while, and it has made me think deeper about the structure and semantics of Rust code.
suobset··on Personal Computer by Perplexity
I do agree with you, there is a reverse in the minimalism trends (which I am incredibly happy to see).

However, in my opinion this specific typeface and aesthetic is been taken up by AI companies to harken back to the likes of the 1984 Macintosh ads and such...in an attempt to try and convey that "$(AI_PRODUCT) is just as revolutionary as the first desktop PCs".

suobset··on Personal Computer by Perplexity
I love (read, hate) the trend of using Serif fonts and marketing material that pull on nostalgic vibes. Surely, AI has been revolutionary in its own regard, for better or worse. But, the more they go into 80/90s style advertising, the more the allure of it dies.

Also this "system" just seems vulnerable af.

suobset··on MacBook Neo
CompSci grad in the US as well, it is genuinely a sea of either Macs or ThinkPads with $INSERT_FAV_LINUX_DISTRO here, and even then 66% of that are Macs.
suobset··on Ask HN: Chromebook leads for K-8 school in need?
The "cloud" is most likely running Linux so it's UNIX-like. Everything old is new again!!
suobset··on Show HN: Moltbook – A social network for moltbots (clawdbots) to hang out
This is actually fun to observe!! Kudos :)
suobset··on Ask HN: Share your personal website
https://skushagra.com - My blog "Declarative" where I write about systems programming, compilers, and low-level optimization.
suobset··on SparkFun Officially Dropping AdaFruit due to CoC Violation
The collections of threads, statements, and accusations on both sides are some of the most unhinged things I have seen in a while, and I don't think any of this helps anyone. :')
suobset··on Tell HN: Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas everyone. I made a little something on AArch64 Assembly: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46385623
suobset··on Tell HN: Cursor exposes side projects to your employer
This is why please have a personal account and personal devices for anything that does not relate to your company or work. This is super critical.

Heck I'd often carry 2 devices if I was traveling, there's no way in hell I would use company laptops. Anything I did on my work Mac, I assumed everyone relevant at work can access into. Kandji already hands over a ton of data wrt this, and I am sure every other MDM solution does too.

You gave your consent when you got the work device and probably signed a document/stated that this was to only be used for work purposes.

suobset··on Go has added Valgrind support
Not even a Go user, and yet this is one of the best things I have read today morning. Valgrind is possibly one of the most powerful tools I have in my belt!!
suobset··on As Android developer verification gets ready to go, a new reason to be worried
Google, your platform currently does not inspire any privacy. It has no ecosystem going for it (workarounds do not count, I want Apple levels everything-works-together-100%-out-of-the-box). Your Watch and other products have repeatedly been called lukewarm, and the Fitbit integration with Google integration was the last straw that pushed me off your watch platform.

If you want me to buy an iOS clone with no competitive edges, I would rather stick with the real deal. At least Apple has been consistent with their views about what iOS is since day 1.

suobset··on A vibe-coding tool for serious developers
DKaaS, gonna start using that more now lol.
suobset··on A vibe-coding tool for serious developers
Constructive criticism:

1. As other comments have already pointed out, the fact that you have AI plastered all over (including your demo video) does not bode well for the "real developers" claim. I would suggest doing some internal testing/surveys with real developers and get them in the demo instead. Best case, your product is a hit and people genuinely love it. Worst case, you learn about your own pitfalls.

The way this is priced and presented feels it's not a alpha/beta product. But, I need the confidence that it actually is not still in alpha/beta.

2. Why this and not Cursor/Claude/Zed? In fact, your slogan ("Code at the Speed of Thought") is a DIRECT rip-off from Zed (https://github.com/zed-industries/zed)

3. Why should I bother with the switching costs? When you mention "better understanding of your codebase", do you mean Cursor-style code indexing and context windows? Do you try anything new here?

suobset··on A vibe-coding tool for serious developers
Real developers like the AI woman on your demo video? Come on....
suobset··on Xeneva Operating System
It is 2-BSD, will be added to the repo in a future update.

Source: asked them.

suobset··on Xeneva Operating System
Update: It's BSD 2-Clause. This will be added to the repo soon. Also the people behind it are super helpful and passionate behind the project!!
suobset··on Xeneva Operating System
That's what I was wondering too, I have sent them an email.
suobset··on Apple Notes Will Gain Markdown Export at WWDC, and, I Have Thoughts
The biggest thing that excites me about this is the fact that other Apple Notes export formats absolutely suck at the moment. You have PDF, and Pages. One's not editable, the other is a proprietary format that will lose formatting if converted to ODF or Word and is clunky in general.
suobset··on Show HN: This Hacker News does not exist
This is one of the most whimsical things I have seen, it honestly took me a good second to realize what was happening.

Reminds me of this other project, social media except everyone you're interacting with is AI: https://socialai.co/

suobset··on Root shell on a credit card terminal
Thank you so much. Been a long time lurker, only recently got an account to start commenting. Posts like this make my entire day: concise, well thought/researched/executed, and they put the "hacker" in HN.
suobset··on WebTUI – A CSS Library That Brings the Beauty of Terminal UIs to the Browser
Personally I felt this as a retro hobbyist project. I don't see it being used for serious matters, but I'd snag something like this up for my personal website any day!!
suobset··on Welcome to Ladybird, a truly independent web browser
Getting to know about this through here, and tbh I believe the writing has been on the wall for Mozilla for quite a while. This honestly does not surprise me as much as I thought it would.

That being said, I am sad to see this fear of mine come true. Mozilla products were rock solid, and available on virtually every platform imaginable. I do not want to live in a Chromium and WebKit only world.

suobset··on Should We Decouple Technology from Everyday Life?
That ad was a peak example of good intention and bad execution. Absolute no one in the iPad Pro's demographic (artists, musicians, photographers, etc) are ever going to appreciate such destruction. I remember seeing a version of the ad where someone just reversed the whole thing, and it instantly felt much better.
