sunsunsunsun··on Classic 50mm “Normal” Lens
The biggest difference is that most phone cameras are still far too wide, they are just terrible for portraits. A few cameras have 50mm equivalent zoom lenses but most seems to go wide+ultrawide.
sunsunsunsun··on Ask HN: Why don't I see gold at the end of the remote working rainbow?
One of the reasons I have been pushing hard for full work from home at my company is purely economical. Having to work from the office is actively degrading my quality of life, my wife and I have a child on the way and we are stuck in a 1 bedroom apartment because we simply cannot afford to buy a home anywhere in the city which my office is located. My pay would have to at a minimum double to even qualify for a mortgage in the city I am in.

It is not that I do not like going to the office (on occasion), its that going to the office degrades my life outside of the office.

sunsunsunsun··on Keith Davis was protecting the oceans, then he disappeared
Yep, I work for and there are several companies working on this problem. I specifically work for a company creating USVs to fight the issue on the water but there are others working on solutions from the air and space.
sunsunsunsun··on IMDB deleted all negative user reviews for The Rings of Power
I must admit, the sight of a black man entering a tavern full of white people did not urk me in the slightest. In fact, the thought that it might be odd never even entered my mind and never broke my immersion.

The characters a bland enough that there is plenty to complain about that does not include their race or sexual orientation. Does "race" even apply considering there is literal other races?

sunsunsunsun··on Tell HN: LinkedIn is automatically importing job postings into company profiles
I wish I had this problem. I get maybe one or two messages from recruiters a month.
sunsunsunsun··on Development Environments
My neovim does all of this and more. Yes ive blurred the lines of text editor and IDE. I enjoy the portability, speed, and customization it offers. I also like that I have everything I need in the terminal.

Its not for everyone though and it takes a lot of time to customize it perfectly for you.

sunsunsunsun··on What should you do with stock options during a recession?
That first article sure is funny. 10% to the first 10 employees... my current employer gave me roughly 0.001% in stock options and I'm employee #5.
sunsunsunsun··on Schools should be using open source software
You could easily spend a semester teaching how to use vim before you even write any code.
sunsunsunsun··on Ask HN: How do you sync your computer’s development configurations/environment?
I use primarily linux but these are the tools i use:

Ansible - I can bootstrap a new linux install with all of my configs in ~10min, this has saved me countless hours of time. My linux installs are heavily modified (tiling window manager, lots of custom hotkeys, custom ricing)

Git - I sync all of my dotfiles to git and and can keep them in sync between PCs.

Syncthing - My dev folder and a few other important folders are kept in sync between all of my PCs using syncthing. I can save a file on my desktop and turn to my laptop and the file will almost instantly be there.

sunsunsunsun··on Ask HN: Is anyone else glad the crypto market is crashing?
Whats the point of storing your life savings in something tied to the US dollar instead of just holding it in US dollars? I genuinely don't understand.
sunsunsunsun··on Pfizer board member suggests end to mask, vaccine mandates
Individuality at the expense of human life. Seems very selfish, especially when preventative measures are so simple.
sunsunsunsun··on The void in Calgary: How office towers emptied in a once bustling downtown
I had the same experience, nearly all the people I knew from high school left Calgary/Alberta. Including myself. The few people who stayed work in oil and gas.
sunsunsunsun··on 10 Year Smartphone
Oh god, I've seen way to many ridiculous crowfunding pages that I just assumed this was real...
sunsunsunsun··on 10 Year Smartphone
In the video he says he has owned 125 smartphones in the last 7 years. Apparently hes going through 17 smartphones a year. Seems ridiculous. I don't even think I have surpassed 10 smartphones in my lifetime.
sunsunsunsun··on Lambda Fellows
If it isn't it should be.
sunsunsunsun··on Chart of the Milky Way Includes More Than 1B Stars
Since the article seemed to neglect actually linking to the data, it is publicly available here: https://gea.esac.esa.int/archive/
sunsunsunsun··on Self-driving Uber car kills Arizona woman crossing street
I have been hit by a car in a bike lane by a car making a rogue left turn (In the UK). I'm always wary of riding in bike lanes like this now.
sunsunsunsun··on Loneliness on the Job: Why No Employee Is an Island
You just described two extremes, surely there is a middle ground somewhere?
sunsunsunsun··on Studying how the brain relinquishes childhood memories
I am also like this, I basically remember nothing before grades 5/6 and all of my "Memories" are derived from stories told by others.
sunsunsunsun··on [dead]
Ah right thank you, I figured it would be an article about millennials that was corrected and not Trump.
sunsunsunsun··on [dead]
Ya, seems like the wrong article was posted?
sunsunsunsun··on Schools are safer than they were in the 90s
Also, how come the incidence of these types of shootings are so much lower in other parts of the world if there is no policy that will help prevent them?
sunsunsunsun··on Counting Calories Is Not the Key to Weight Loss, New Study Finds
But a new study, published Tuesday in JAMA, may turn that advice on its head. It found that people who cut back on added sugar, refined grains and highly processed foods while concentrating on eating plenty of vegetables and whole foods — without worrying about counting calories or limiting portion sizes — lost significant amounts of weight over the course of a year.

Maybe I missed it in the article but this just seems like calorie restriction to me. Its much harder to eat a large amount of calories if its just meat and vegetables.
