sumuyuda··on How much electricity does AI consume?
What will fuel the growing energy consumption? Not fossil fuels.

Sam Altman says we need to invent nuclear fusion to meet the AI power consumption.

Did anyone stop to think maybe reducing power usage is a better solution than a moon shot invention?

sumuyuda··on Goodbye Auth0
The notice period also exists so you can find a new job and aren’t immediately out on the street like in the US.

It is both in the interest of the company and employee, as neither can terminate the contract immediately.

sumuyuda··on Over 50% of the population of Germany does not own their home
It’s not the tenant protections that cause the problems, but rent price inequality(old contracts vs new contracts) due to the landlord increasing the price when the previous tenant leaves. Especially in Berlin many landlords charge illegally high rents. If this equality didn’t exist, people wouldn’t hold on to flats like they do.
sumuyuda··on Over 50% of the population of Germany does not own their home
A fixed term lease in Germany is only legal in some narrow circumstances and can’t be renewed multiple times in a row. I think after a few years the landlord has to offer you an unlimited lease.
sumuyuda··on The dating app paradox
There are other options to private capitalism than the government. Could be a non-profit/NGO/worker owned collective. Maybe these types on organizations could provide a better product/experience, as they aren’t orientated around maximizing the profit.
sumuyuda··on Final Decision on Chromebook Case in Denmark
Can you actually disable all the tracking? I suspect not, as it is core to Google’s business.
sumuyuda··on Prioritizing software right to repair: engaging corporate response teams
I think Right to Maintain should be a better term for what we need. When you buy a device that is proprietary, you have no right to maintain the software and once the vendor decides they don’t want to maintain it (usually though planned obsolescence) it is quickly e-waste.

We need to have the boot loader unlocked and all the hardware schematics made available. Better yet, force the vendor to release the source code once they stop supporting the device.

sumuyuda··on Apple redecorates its iPhone prison to appease Europe
There are lots of scam apps in Apple’s AppStore with weekly subscriptions for basic functionality. Apple let’s them fly as they get a cut of it.
sumuyuda··on In loving memory of square checkbox
I think the difference with the square checkbox is that it is for desktop UIs and clicking with a mouse. The circle checkbox is for mobile UIs where you are tapping with your finger.
sumuyuda··on Apple's punitive compliance will burn its political and developer goodwill
I transitioned off iOS development this year. I had been doing macOS and iOS development close to 10 years. Apple’s behavior has really put me off their platform as both a developer and user.
sumuyuda··on Ask HN: What happened to normal-sized smartphones?
Club Mate is massively popular here in Berlin.
sumuyuda··on Assassin's Creed publisher Ubisoft facing lawsuit for shutting down game
The bootloaders should also be unlocked once the software updates stop so users can continue to use the hardware they purchased.
sumuyuda··on The Downward Spiral of Technology
System change was mentioned at the end of the article. Moving past Capitalism will be the way forward.
sumuyuda··on Spotube: Open-source Spotify-Youtube client
There are other factors here besides price to choose this client. Privacy and no usage/analytics spyware are some big ones, as well as native apps on desktop.
sumuyuda··on App store to be 'split in two' ahead of EU iPhone sideloading deadline: report
You are correct in that you don’t have to install a separate front end app, but the apps are segregated on the backend. Apps are region locked creating different versions of the AppStore. Plenty developers only release their app on a specific region.
sumuyuda··on App store to be 'split in two' ahead of EU iPhone sideloading deadline: report
I’m confused by what the AppStore being split means. Each country already has it’s own AppStore with specific apps, and reviews.

Will developers have to submit to the Apple Worldwide AppStore that excludes EU countries? Then submit a separate build to the Apple EU AppStore?

sumuyuda··on We Are Doomed: A pessimistic point of view of "modern software engineering"
I did. Got a Steam Deck and couldn’t be happier.
sumuyuda··on "I Contribute to the Windows Kernel. We Are Slower" (2013)
Lol pretty went out the door with Big Sur and the iOS UI that was brought in.
sumuyuda··on "I Contribute to the Windows Kernel. We Are Slower" (2013)
I find it funny they try to make people not devoting their full time/energy to a capitalist company as lesser. Trick’s on them, the company is there to exploit to you, you aren’t part of some greater cause. The more of your time you give the company, the more value they get.
sumuyuda··on Linux hits nearly 4% desktop user share on Statcounter
> For macOS developers, it’s native support for Linux VMs & containers as well as the rise of Apple Silicon & ARM.

macOS still doesn’t have official support for containers. There is https://macoscontainers.org/ but you have to disable SIP, which is a no go for most professional/work machines.

sumuyuda··on So I Quit Spotify
If you want to listen to complete albums at a time, Albums on iOS is really great.

sumuyuda··on Japan to crack down on Apple and Google app store monopolies
A lot of apps in the AppStore and PlayStore are filled with spyware and adware or contain obscenely priced subscriptions and loot boxes that people still fall for. So I’m not for sure if there is a big difference, as the gatekeepers willing allow this junk in.
sumuyuda··on Apple allows some iOS apps to track user locations via lists of nearby SSIDs
You can view the entitlements from the extracted ipa by using the codesign tool. So it is totally possible to see if an app has this entitlement.
sumuyuda··on Show HN: Wave – Modern Open-Source Terminal (macOS and Linux)
It’s insane to me that anyone would use a terminal that is Electron. A terminal should be really light weight and not use up many resources.
sumuyuda··on Beeper's esoteric fix for iMessage access suggests why it's pushing politically
That’s not how the network effect works.
sumuyuda··on Epic Games, Google and App Store Monopolies
Now imagine if there was only one giant apartment building everyone had to live in. People then don’t have a choice.
sumuyuda··on Bluetooth keystroke-injection in Android, Linux, macOS and iOS
I had to create custom shortcuts to disable WiFi and Bluetooth after Apple made the ones from Control Center useless.
sumuyuda··on Beeper Mini is back
Not for sure where the claim of Windows machines lasting less than Apple products comes from. Before Windows 11, you could easily be running Windows 10 on a 10-15 year old computer.
sumuyuda··on Fairphone 5: Keeping it 10/10?
Security updates aren’t the same as major version updates.

The iPhone 6 is stuck on iOS 12 and has missed out on 5 major iOS versions. It launched with iOS 8, so it only got upgrade support for four versions of iOS.

sumuyuda··on Desktop GUI Is an Efficient and Fulfilling Way of Human-Computer Interaction
Lol, can’t do that when most modern laptops have non-upgradable ram.
