sumuyuda··on Why Swift's type checker is so slow
You can have a comment above the constant explaining the math of how it was calculated.
sumuyuda··on Teachers: AI is making children dumb as fuck
I think this is probably somewhat already the case due to smartphones. Younger generations that grew up with a smartphone as their first computing device have a lot less tech literacy than old generations that started with a desktop computer with no internet connection.
sumuyuda··on Ask HN: Is it just me, or does the job market for IT seem bad today?
I think this makes no sense, as web development is not the same as mobile app development.

I always thought fullstack meant front end and backend, not front end across multiple platforms.

sumuyuda··on YouTube's next move might make it virtually impossible to block ads
Companies already steal the user’s data, Google is a big leader in this behavior.
sumuyuda··on Germany trials the four-day workweek: "Free time is invaluable"
Working here in Germany, I switched to part time at 75% (5 x 6 hours). Not having to grind another two hours per day is totally worth the pay decrease. Time is the most valuable resource we have.
sumuyuda··on Apple Silicon MacBook batteries can't be replaced under warranty by third party
How do you vote with your wallet when you can only do Apple software development on Apple hardware?
sumuyuda··on I Miss BSD/Linux
There’s still no USB-A support, so the dongle book was never truly fixed.
sumuyuda··on Ask HN: What makes Windows 11 perform much worse than Windows XP?
> Thanks to a low barrier to entry, the average developer now is much lower quality than the average 20 years ago.

I think this is a big reason why we have lots of poorly performing JavaScript based software.

sumuyuda··on Daily marijuana use outpaces daily drinking in the US, a new study says
You can in places with lots of partying, there is the smell of puke and piss from all the drunk people.
sumuyuda··on Tim Cook is running out of ideas
I think it is perfectly valid to be able to develop iOS apps on Windows or Linux. Android studio runs on both these platforms. There is no reason to restrict it other than Apple wants to sell more hardware. Every developer and CI machine has to be bought from Apple.
sumuyuda··on Germany may introduce conscription for all 18-year-olds
FDP is neoliberal. They are pro business and free market.
sumuyuda··on Fedora Asahi Remix 40 is a big step forward for Linux on Macs
With the exception of the iPhone, the rest of the hardware is around 20%, same amount as the services.
sumuyuda··on How rich is too rich? Limitarianism: The Case Against Extreme Wealth
They exploit tax loopholes and pay less tax than the average worker.
sumuyuda··on Why We Hate Working for Big Companies (2018)
Socialism has never been fully realized, as under communism the surplus and means of production were controlled by the state, not the workers. It was state capitalism.
sumuyuda··on TikTok owner has strong First Amendment case against US ban, professors say
Do users have a right to express themselves on a private platform? Private platforms aren’t a public forum.

Instead if the company was bought by big tech then shutdown some time later, is this also a free speech violation, as users are deprived of communicating by their preferred means?

sumuyuda··on Ask HN: Is iCloud a viable alternative to Dropbox? Any other alternatives?
Having worked with the file provider API, it’s not ideal. It will automatically prune downloaded files and you have no control over it. One Drive had to do a hack of storing the files you want to always keep in a different location and then have the file provider extension copy from that location rather than the cloud.

I switched from iCloud to Nextcloud, but Nextcloud will also be moving to a file provider extension, not for sure how it will work with their current sync client.

Ultimately I left macOS and don’t have any problems on Linux with Nextcloud.

sumuyuda··on Why is software quality worse than a decado ago
The last two bigger American tech companies I have worked for in the last decade basically had no dedicated QA testers. They expected developers, designers, and product managers to test features before releasing them. What a joke. This is a total cost cutting measure and resulted in really poor software quality.
sumuyuda··on Reducing Wealth Inequality: The Wealth Time Limit
> I prefer allowing the wealthy to spend their own money, as it is more compassionate, less extreme, less dramatic, and doesn’t involve state intervention.

Pretty sure the wealthiest people in the world didn’t get there by being a nice person. They most likely exploited (likely legally) people and the environment to acquire their wealth. Why give them compassion and not the people they harmed?

sumuyuda··on My Ideal Libre Computer+Phone
The steam deck is a step in this direction.

Apple could easily do this with the iPhone and have it switch to macOS when docked, but obliviously won’t because they want to sell you two devices.

sumuyuda··on Oregon's governor signs right-to-repair law that bans 'parts pairing'
I actually think having the device become unusable, if not under the user’s control, is terrible from an environmental stand point, as the device is useless and has to be scraped.

It would be much better if instead of locking everyone out of the device, it instead gets wiped after some conditions are met. This way your data isn’t compromised and the device can be used by other parties.

There are plenty of cases where the device isn’t stolen this affects, such as someone dying, or an employee not removing their Apple ID when handing back in work equipment.

Apple gains by having the device become unusable, as it is taken out of circulation.

sumuyuda··on Digital signs in Brookline are collecting data from your phone as you walk by
I created custom shortcuts for actually turning off Bluetooth and Wifi, and use those exclusively instead of the dark pattern buttons in control center.

You can also turn them off in Settings. Also anytime a macOS or iOS update is applied, Apple turns back on Bluetooth even if it was turned off.

They want you to leave them on so their Find My network can function, regardless of what the user wants.

sumuyuda··on If You Don't Change the UI, Nobody Notices (2009)
I think 90s desktop UIs are probably the peek of usability. Once the UI trends went flat and minimal, usability has taken a huge hit.

I’d agree with the quote, every big UI rework has been controversial, see Windows Vista, Windows 8, and iOS 7. Even at an app level, developers will frequently refresh their UI, usually dropping features and making the software less useful.

sumuyuda··on Electronic waste has grown to record levels
I think the consumer electronics industry will need to be heavily regulated to move away from consumable electronics before we see any meaningful change.

Electronics will need to be open so both the hardware and software can be repaired and maintained by others than the vender.

sumuyuda··on Tech Titans Are the Robber Barons of Our Gilded Age
I don’t think so. These companies have locked users in so they can’t easily use an alternative.

Want to abandon iPhones, now you are stuck in the spyware/privacy nightmare of Google and other Android OEMs.

Only option is to switch to a de-Googled rom, but then you can’t use banking apps or send messages with RCS. Android is slowly being more locked down.

sumuyuda··on Are We Watching the Internet Die?
I think they mean the actual dark ages, as big tech has effectively created feudalism where users are trapped on their platforms/software/hardware generating profits for these companies. Much like serfs stuck farming for their lord/vassal/king.
sumuyuda··on Apple hit with over 1.8B euro EU antitrust fine in Spotify case
But only on macOS hardware. All other devices have their boot loader locked.
sumuyuda··on Your TV Is Too Good for You
I am perfectly happy with my 1080p TV from 2010. Movies and games look great. I don’t see what is gained with 4K.
sumuyuda··on ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 includes SODIMM slots and user-replaceable batteries
Key travel was also reduced.
sumuyuda··on Ask HN: How many of you Apple developers still use Objective C?
You can use AppKit in Swift just like you can use UIKit on iOS. There is no requirement to use SwiftUI when creating a macOS swift app.
sumuyuda··on Paying people to work on open source is good
“Far too often I see arguments like: “maintainers shouldn’t be paid by private companies because the government should be supporting them.” Sure, this sounds great – but governments aren’t doing this!”

Governments are doing this. The German government funds https://www.sovereigntechfund.de/
