sumo89··on Ask HN: What are some B.S. tricks management pulls on naive developers?
Startups are typically awful for this because the business is the founder's baby and they can't understand why other people aren't willing to sacrifice as much as they are. I've felt it first hand and in the exit interview the founder didn't even understand I wasn't in it for the stock options are they're vested after 3 years and no way he paid me enough to actually buy in.

Why do all personal assistant programs/apps have to have female names?
sumo89··on Data leak reveals China is tracking almost 2.6m people in Xinjiang
This is just part of the reason mass tracking is bad, you never know who is going to end up with the data.
sumo89··on Ask HN: How do I earn more as a developer?
Move to London, there's tons of places hiring for people with React experience and it shouldn't be hard to find somewhere paying £50k + if you've gone some years experience.
sumo89··on Fyre Festival Was a Huge Scam. Is Netflix’s Fyre Documentary a Scam, Too?
Agreed. However I see Billy as a product of the startup culture embracing failure. You have an idea for a company, convince someone else to finance it, the company fails and that person looses all their money. If that company succeeds then you're hailed as the next Steve Jobs despite the very real possibility you're a conman at heart like Billy.

FuckJerry deserves all the backlash they get and probably more but we can't let them overshadow the type of culture that has allowed someone like Billy to be doing this for so long.

sumo89··on Ask HN: Is it just me, or is CSS too damn hard?
The thing is CSS is there's a lot of gotcha's to remember but I think people mostly struggle with it because they underestimate the HTML. You need to think through the box model for how to structure the elements before you start trying to move them around relative to each other.
sumo89··on Field notes: London, England (2018)
Believe me we know what's wrong with it, we're just careful to criticise it. The root of all those problems is a lack of cash. The current govt. is de-funding it to breaking point so they can bring in private contractors.

You're exposed to more pollution sitting in a car in traffic than you are cycling through it in the open.

sumo89··on Don't add your 2 cents
Saying "this is how to improve" is fine and all, but it's much more effective when the methods to improve are thought of by the person they're for. That's what coaching is, helping people realise the steps they need to take to get to the end goal.
