sullenpaladin··on The end of India’s ‘IT miracle’?
The head bobble just means that they hear you. It does not mean yes or no or anything else really.
sullenpaladin··on The Surprisingly Solid Mathematical Case of the Tin Foil Hat Gun Prepper
Originally, the carbine was invented for cavalry use, since a shorter stock is easier to handle on horseback.
sullenpaladin··on Making $60k a month from a podcast on software engineering
I have been using DoggCatcher for years now, and I have no complaints.

Joe's daily podcast is 3 hours long on average, so he doesn't come close, he exceeds by a factor of 3!
sullenpaladin··on Ask HN: What personal finance advice would you give your 25yo self ?
Me at 25 would be 20 years ago. That would have been an awesome time to buy a house. Today, not so much.

Totally agree. You always need substantial cash on hand. I got caught fully invested during the financial crisis and I was not in a position to invest at all-time lows.

> if you control the database

That is a big if in the enterprise. It is getting better, but for most enterprise apps I have worked on, there is a db team that owns the db and you have to go through them for all changes.

Perhaps db abstraction can be thought of as an instance of Conway's Law.

Abstracting the database has another benefit you are neglecting. It is easy to mock the database and test your application use cases if the database layer is abstracted. This is nearly impossible if database access is baked into the app.
sullenpaladin··on My phone was searched at LAX, which apparently is the new normal
White middle class non-dissident man with a wife and kids here. I have had my hands swabbed for explosive residue on multiple occasions for domestic flights. We were also pulled aside for additional screening once (the whole family), but it went fairly quickly. One time I forgot a pocketknife in my carry-on and the TSA agent found it. We laughed about it and she confiscated it, no further action was taken.
sullenpaladin··on Rails developers should learn React
I share a bubble with eterm, in a Fortune 100 enterprise. I have heard React mentioned once by a particularly engaged front-end developer, but everything I know of in production is JQuery, a couple Angular 1 apps, and a whole lot of horrible older stuff.
sullenpaladin··on Savers are slowly choking off the life of the world economy
Interest rates are all directly or indirectly based on rates set by the Federal Reserve (in the US). Market forces have no say in interest rates.
