suhastech··on Zombie Outbreak Simulator for iOS: Sales report
I assumed both are closely related (I'm no economist). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareto_distribution My original comment was to put just enough effort to capitalise on the first few parts of the distribution.

As an outside observer, indie game development is still doesn't seem sustainable. I've read too many stories of people with initial success and try to build a company around it to finally fail. There are too many variables in play to build predictable revenue.

There are of-course exceptions, it mostly involves making as many games as possible and praying one of them clicks (Zynga, Rovio etc). In such a market, the competition is ruthless. Both perfect competition and complete monopoly are not favourable[1].

I just read the 4 hour work week book. He actually talks about the 80-20 rule. 80% of returns come from 20% of work emphasising on the effectiveness of your actions not efficiency.

Applied to this, they could have enjoyed the initial success and moved onto better things. The later effort seems like beating a dead horse.

or maybe this is just my hindsight bias.

"scary to imagine what life would be like if we couldn't look up whatever we needed"

It'd be scary to work out math problems without pen and paper. It'd be scary to cross over the amazon without an airplane. Applies to every tool you use.

I'd like to think of Google as my secondary memory (HDD?). All I seem to have is RAM.

I agree. This situation works great for computer related work.

You probably can't build a robot or waltz with your partner on Skype.

suhastech··on Google's Driverless Car Is Worth Trillions
Yes, I agree that the world is moving more toward virtual commuting.

Somehow, I feel there is still no alterative to real world communication. Until that is fixed, this is still amazing.

Self driving cars will have a metro train like experience with very good reach thanks to the existing infrastructure (roads).

suhastech··on Sophie In North Korea
In the article, this line really hit me, "Are we morally required to intervene"?

I'm not sure. Here's a slightly open documentary (around the 44 minute mark) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaqbVSEPfRc

Even with all the brainwashing, they somehow feel the nationalism to fight through the "bad times" and find time to feel happy with smaller things in life. I've always felt happiness is differential. To a North Korean kid, happiness from a sumptuous meal is equivalent to getting an iPad in the US? The Kims are enforcing the "Ignorance is bliss" ideology by censorship. Is that morally correct, I'm not sure but it's something we can ponder about.

That is the reason I wrote a Mac app to do just that. Atleast for emails as the parent comment is suggesting.

suhastech··on Proposition HN: I will pay $8000 for you to build your side-project/MVP
Agreed. Life is full of risk vs returns decisions.

Employment - Low Risk, Low Returns

Startup - High Risk, High Returns

I love how this preposition is somewhere in the middle.

suhastech··on Proposition HN: I will pay $8000 for you to build your side-project/MVP
I think this is perfect for first time wannapreneurs with very limited connections which seems like a large untapped space.

I applaud the proposal. I'd love to hear about a follow up post in the near future.

suhastech··on In China, Delhi gang rape spurs online debate on democracy, then censorship
This is definitely not a blame game. Do note that I've specified a few contributing factors in pre colonial times major one being the male dominance. The taboo is just stopping us to open up the issue.

I believe we can solve problem by finding the cause or in other words going to the first principles. That's how most things work. Discarding a theory just on the basis of trying to list factors is probably not the best way to go about.

FWIW, I'm Indian and I'm not even a nationalist TBH.

suhastech··on In China, Delhi gang rape spurs online debate on democracy, then censorship
My hypothesis on why the way it is in India. This should not be viewed critically. This probably applies to less literate part of the population.

Before british influence, looking at the history, indians seem to have been very open about sex. Historically, the family trees worked in a way, male is dominant and the bread earner. Family ties are very much respected. So, male child is kind of like a retirement plan for parents.

During the british influence (probably, due to the christian missions?) a taboo on sex talk was instated. With increasing poverty, poor ones started loading off their "girl child burden" by child marriages. Here's where disrespect for women increase and probably seen as more of a "problem" than a cherished companion. It can be noted that dowry might be interpreted as a payment received to take care of the "problem". There seems to be a few revolts to ban child marriages by social reformers but that didn't completely solve the problem.

Fast forward few years, this created a void in companionship from his puberty to mid twenties until his marriageable age.

I think the society must evolve to completely solve the problem. I'm afraid that, due to this, youngsters are losing faith in traditional monogamy. At extremes, taking such bad measures due to the sorry state of respect for the opposite sex.

I'm actually fine with it as an app developer. Easy Rails Integration, Django app, Wordpress plugins could be something they might want to look at.

suhastech··on A Self-Made Man Looks At How He Made It
With respect to India, I thought I'd give you a little more insight.

A grossly generalised point of view:

* Low class group don't pay taxes

* Middle class group do pay taxes

* High class group might not pay taxes

The middle class group usually bear the burden of the development of the country. The taxes that does reach the government is cut by a large extent by high income corrupt politicians, who obviously, don't pay taxes.

Bottom line, the ROI for a middle class person in India to pay taxes is not high as you thought it would be. Hopefully, this changes.

very little money / person is fine as long as you have enough scale to back it up.

@parentcomment. I see that you seem to have a lot of traffic from India. You might want to check out http://vserv.mobi/ IIRC, they do have this payment processor which can pull money from your mobile prepaid balance. I don't think a lot of people here use credit cards.

Works well in India, not so much in USA (due to the 140 char limit in Twilio, message concatenation is not allowed)

suhastech··on Voyager 1 spots new region at the edge of the Solar System
From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Horizons

Provided it survives that far out, New Horizons is likely to follow the Voyager probes in exploring the outer heliosphere and mapping the heliosheath and heliopause. Even though it was launched far faster than any outward probe before it, New Horizons will never overtake Voyager 1 as the most distant man-made object from Earth. Close fly-bys of Saturn and Titan gave Voyager 1 an advantage with its extra gravity assist. When New Horizons reaches the distance of 100 AU, it will be travelling at about 13 km/s (29,000 mph), around 4 km/s (8,900 mph) slower than Voyager 1 at that distance.
