sugerman··on How can an undergrad programmer make money over winter break?
You're probably not going to find a temporary programming job where you make appreciably more money than unrelated work so I would suggest finding a job where you're going to meet a lot of people around your age in a similar situation and kick around ideas for projects to do together. Never know what might come of it and the lessons you'll learn from trying to actually build a product will be invaluable.
sugerman··on Is programming knowledge related to age? An exploration of Stackoverflow
Question seems to start on a bad foot to begin with. I wouldn't say answering questions on SO qualifies someone as 'deliberately practicing' when it comes to programming. I've worked with programmers in their 50s who answer very specific programming questions online but couldn't tell you the last time they even considered trying out a new language.
sugerman··on [dead]
I reserve "it" for unborn babies whose parents don't know the gender.
sugerman··on [dead]
I have a hard time seeing how Wikipedia contributors/editors struggling over something quite a lot of people would also struggle with is so definitively an intentionally hurtful act as the author suggests.
sugerman··on [dead]
Someone who identifies as neither gender. I realize gender != sex in this context but I couldn't think of a better alternative.
sugerman··on [dead]
That is a pretty poor analogy.
sugerman··on [dead]
Got me wondering: What's the non "harmful/hurtful" pronoun to use for someone who is asexual (probably not the right word)?
sugerman··on Riot.js – A 1kb client-side MVP framework
Calling this a framework is a bit of a stretch isn't it? I don't see how a few helper functions that rely on a very large library constitute a framework for doing anything at all.
sugerman··on Where Can the Middle Class Buy a Home?
I agree with the sentiment. I bought at about 2X my salary with plenty of savings in the bank and a combination of bad luck and weather (Sandy) have required over 10% of the house value just in functional repairs in the last 2 years. If I had bought at 4-5X my salary and had the same issues completing the repairs would have been much more stressful or even impossible.
sugerman··on Where Can the Middle Class Buy a Home?
That's ignoring the tax deductions for mortgage interest and property taxes as well as home value increase.
sugerman··on Dude, What's with the Web Site?
> The original Heavy Cat Multimedia company site was likely one of the first 200 sites to go live on the web.

What?

sugerman··on Programming Languages at a Glance
More appropriately titled "Programming Languages at a Glance" by the author.
sugerman··on A Better Way to Learn AngularJS
Didn't get past the fourth sentence in Part 1:

It doesn’t use one-way data binding.

Probably want to reword that.

Also the first link (Things I Wish I Were Told about AngularJS) starts off with a bad example used to demonstrate ng-repeat's scope changes. Anyone reading that (at any level of AngularJS knowledge) would first pick up on the fact that it uses 'item.value' for the text input but just 'checked' for the checkbox. The example is more of a design mistake in the code than an example of ng-repeat's scope.

sugerman··on Ohio Police Department Using Fake Drug Checkpoints
They wouldn't search 100% of cars at a real checkpoint either.
sugerman··on Why Tumblr Was a Massive Steal for Yahoo
Seems like the article is making a case for Yahoo buying Pinterest, not Tumblr. Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't Tumblr posts generally without context?
sugerman··on Proposed AngularJS WebPage structure
What's the actual proposal here? This just seems like a description of the intended organization of an Angular application.
sugerman··on Data.gov - ~400.000 free Geospatial and Raw Datasets
I'll have to check it out again but when this first came out there were far too many Self-Extracting ZIPs and Excel files for me to make much use of it.

Not in the way its used in his samples.

I registered just to suggest giving XKCD credit for the comic they made (and are still hosting for you to use without bothering to rehost yourself)
