sudhirc··on Taking Cold Showers
I have taken cold shower almost all my life. Initially because my home was not equipped with a hot shower and later as an exercise is self control when shower became available. It may have felt better if you either adopted to it or it was not forced in the first place. One benefit which I have experienced is that outside temperature feel less harsh once you come out of the shower.
sudhirc··on Eight Out Of China’s Top Nine Government Officials Are Scientists
They may be because when they were growing up studying science was their ticket to wealth, respect, and power. Arguments, disagreements, and self correction are pillars of scientific minds. Autocratic society in which a small disagreement can result is you vanishing, cannot possible nurture scientific minds.
sudhirc··on Google Creates Humanoid Robot, Programs Itself
Wonderful piece of writing. This guy should write sci-fi full time.
sudhirc··on Why programmers are not paid in proportion to their productivity
I agree but then why salaries of top mgmt. is not decided using the same criteria.
sudhirc··on The cost of cloud hosting vs. colocation
This is not about depreciation cost alone. Normally vendor tie support cycle to depreciation cycle so you cannot get new parts or support unless you pay them heavily.
sudhirc··on McKinsey’s corrupted culture
"Consultants at McK are labeled as 'conflicted' if they have served a competitor of a client in a given industry." and in couple of years consultant runs out of industries.

sudhirc··on Expert Exchange gets narky after snub from Q/A site review
I am a registered expert and contributor and they reward me by locking me out if I do not contribute for a month. I cannot even see my own answers. With competition around I do not think they will be able to hold people hostage for long.
sudhirc··on Child With Missing Cerebellum Shows Power of Human Spirit
Well said. This also shows we yet do not understand our brain.

sudhirc··on Microsoft beware: Stephen Elop is a flight risk (2008)
Seems like he is hiding an e from his last name :) Stephen Elope is his real name. He runs away to marry a new company every other year.
sudhirc··on Meat-Eating Furniture
Killer tech for tropical countries where lamps are needed and flies are hated :)
sudhirc··on The unfortunate math behind consulting companies
This article generalizes too much. Top Indian IT giants are consulting companies and they are making a ton of money.
sudhirc··on Belgian man completes 365 marathons in 365 consecutive days
"Engels had asthma as a youngster and doctors told him he should not participate in sports. But he decided to overcome his ailment and ran his first marathon at 25. He said his latest feat is the result of 35 years of exercise."
sudhirc··on Why Chinese Mothers are Not Superior (from a female Chinese engineer)
quote from original WSG article. "If a Chinese child gets a B—which would never happen—there would first be a screaming, hair-tearing explosion. The devastated Chinese mother would then get dozens, maybe hundreds of practice tests and work through them with her child for as long as it takes to get the grade up to an A." Do you want to do this to your child? It may be just me but WSG article looks like a well concealed satire on Chinese/Asian parenting :)
sudhirc··on Putin Orders Russian Move to GNU/Linux
"...you literally can't spend that much money on a house if you tried." Well this Idiot is building $2 Billion house. http://www.mwilliams.info/archive/2008/06/twobillion-dollar-...

Great explanation for noobs.
sudhirc··on Dear British Government: You've Screwed Up (Startup) Visas Badly
UK government does not want people coming in on Tier 1 and compete in open market; however they do not have any problems issuing Tier 2 which is intra company transfer.Only criteria is that income of employee should not be less than £40K/year. Do they want salaries to stabilize at £40K?
sudhirc··on Why you absolutely MUST write an API when you write your next app
Isn't this called top down programming? I think most people on HN do not like top down approach.
sudhirc··on My Y Combinator interview.
This makes you a non player in valuation game. By having a revenue you cannot over project and hence cannot get a valuation to provide a worthy exit to ycombinator.

sudhirc··on NewsBlur: A feed reader with intelligence
This UI looks very similar to MS outlook and I really it.However unlike outlook you cannot have all 3 panes vertically. On large screen ability display data into 3 vertical panes makes it more usable. are you planning to add this feature sometime in future?
sudhirc··on Nordstrom's 75-word employee handbook

sudhirc··on Hackers with no equity in company: good or bad?
you are talking like a MBA and a manager. As per your learnings people are machine so you can easily replace one malfunctioning part by another.

I am not involved in any startup but like to do my job with creative energy and scripted quite a few time saver solutions for my group. Until now all my manager were thoughtful enough to allow me but this new guy thinks that he can replace any person with any person without looking at the unique attributes of each of the person. He wants me to do the work others can do without looking at what i can do and others cannot... I am sorry but you are sounding like my manager so get a job in big company. Startup make you respect your talent and looks like you do not want to do that... Coders may be dime a dozen but believe me true developers/hackers are not...

sudhirc··on A Hacker's resume (Jon Lech Johansen)
quite an impressive resume
sudhirc··on Seth's Blog: Business card mistakes
Probably he is expressing his opinion. I think it may not work for everyone.
