in the best case mods remove spam and illegal content, and beyond leave the community alone to do its thing. unfortunately typical reddit mods feel compelled to do all kinds of other things, like they're on a mission from god.

that bike chain logic reminded me of "freeman on the land" lawyering.
subsistence234··on Apple’s Unionized Store Wants to Start Accepting Tips from Customers
The marginal benefit of putting a tipping screen in the payment flow is close to zero. If one person during the whole year avoids the creepy store that demands tips, it's pure loss.

(iphones can be purchased online, btw)

lmao (honestly) at the humorous implication that buying a goldfish per year and mourning its demise for 9 weeks in cancun is comparable in effort or commitment to birthing and raising a child.

most criticism I've read seems to boil down to: he's not a macchiavellian eel.

> handing things over to other people to carry on.

"other people" means: corporate stooges

______

not the first time in history that voices appear to demand that a leader of some project, someone with a proven track record of principles over status/power/wealth, be replaced. typically what they're really asking for is a leader that's easier to pressure, more amenable to their interests. this is even more the case if they're demanding that the replacement be selected on the basis of immutable characteristics unrelated to the project.

yikes. this ain't it chief.

I can tell you've really thought about this topic deeply lol

both may be true, and seasoning preferences are a boring topic, and not the point of the article.

I understand that social climbing requires participation in this lying game. Maybe your HN account is tied to your irl identity, so I understand if you can't speak honestly here.

In well-run cities, that stay on top of public safety and hygiene, extreme measures never become necessary.

AFAI remember (I was pretty young then) San Francisco was quite nice around 2000.

usually only the lower classes suffer for our luxury beliefs. this is an exception.

In addition to the year-round mild climate, SF's local laws (and enforcement or lack thereof, e.g. legalizing theft of less than $1000 or intentionally spreading HIV) attracts desperate people, as well as people who simply enjoy the lifestyle, from all over the US, by rewarding them for doing what they do.

Basic "supply and demand" also applies to crime, playground needles and sidewalk turds: if you lower the "price" (punishment) at constant demand (people who want to steal or shoot up in public), the supply increases.

we need to remove empirical data and stats from the training data, to prevent the AI from noticing the wrong things.

>most SVB customers

I'm just a little smol bean startup with a 9 figure valuation not a finance expert, how could I have any idea about financial markets or risk?

subsistence234··on Joint statement by the Department of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, and FDIC
I'm a fan of startups, but seriously... wtf? how are startups "healthy companies"?
subsistence234··on Joint statement by the Department of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, and FDIC
poor me I'm just a lil smol bean executive who didn't understand why the other banks didn't take the same risks and I didn't want to ask either.
subsistence234··on Joint statement by the Department of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, and FDIC
It's a reasonable sacrifice the other 330 million Americans should make, so that your AI-powered dog cappucino business doesn't have to suffer a 20% haircut for choosing the bank with the 50% higher APY offered on deposits, without ever asking yourself where that free lunch is coming from.
subsistence234··on Joint statement by the Department of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, and FDIC
why do you think those bonds are worth only 80% now, if you believe they should be worth 100%? is it a market inefficiency? do you think you could make risk-free 25% profit by buying them?
subsistence234··on Urgent: Sign the petition now
Just splitting your assets over two different banks would cut the risk in half (almost). And entrepreneurs should have a very good sense for when something is "too good to be true" like APY far higher than what other banks can offer. The most likely explanation for higher returns is higher risk.

>The US government made $15B from the 2008 bailouts.

if we ignore the hundreds (at least) of billions $$$ that the fed created and flooded the world economy with, in order to make that $15B "win" possible.

of course it was mostly non-Americans who ate the gigantic costs, thanks to the dollar's unique status as world reserve currency. but that just makes it worse, from a moral hazard POV.

>We discovered about 30% of YC companies would not be able to make payroll even after the $250,000 insured amount if they were to wait months for their payments. That is detailed on the FDIC website currently as the process for remediation.

They'll get 40% back next week, enough to make payroll for a while, and another 50% later (possibly much later), and for that second part they can find someone with big pockets to buy them out early at a discount.

subsistence234··on Urgent: Sign the petition now
kinda like student loan forgiveness, which would have penalized financially responsible people in favor of redditors.
subsistence234··on Urgent: Sign the petition now
two accounts at two different banks already decreases the expected loss by 45% or so. (not 50%, because of contagion)
subsistence234··on Urgent: Sign the petition now
apparently SVB offered APY far above what other banks were offering.
subsistence234··on Urgent: Sign the petition now
that limit was set in 2008. before that it was $100k
subsistence234··on Urgent: Sign the petition now
if $250k is nothing then $1k is less than nothing.

how did they do it before 2010? how did e.g. the soviet union do it?
