subarctic··on English: A vs. An
GP is talking about the name of the letter H like when you're saying the ABCs. How do you pronounce it?
subarctic··on English: A vs. An
Some YouTubers always say a like the letter a (e.g. the vowel in "day")

I find it pretty annoying. A different YouTuber had a good video about it though https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4IJLyFAzYes&ra=m

subarctic··on English: A vs. An
An historic just sounds pretentious, sorry :p
subarctic··on English: A vs. An
Some people pronounce nvidia as nuhvidia others as envidia so when the writer puts "a" or "an" before it they're revealing how they pronounce it
subarctic··on English: A vs. An
It's similar to a/an, thuh is before a consonant and thee is before a vowel. And thee is also used for emphasis. But some people use a / thuh before a vowel. Do you have an example?
subarctic··on English: A vs. An
That one is more natural without the word "some" imo
subarctic··on OpenAI expands ChatGPT ads with Sponsored Agents
Not everyone hates them. A lot of people do, it can be a tough job because of that but it's just a form of marketing/sales. So is cold emailing. You can get customers that love your work or your product that way, some people will be annoyed along the way but if you're providing real value to the people who become your customers I think it's usually reasonable to be using those channels.

Anyway I was being facetious i hate ads as much as the next guy when I'm using a service like YouTube where they force ads on you and fight against my ad blocker. But having run ads myself i have some sympathy for the advertisers now.

subarctic··on OpenAI expands ChatGPT ads with Sponsored Agents
I wasn't saying people who receive ads find them useful, although that can sometimes be true. I was saying they are useful for the people that are paying to run them
subarctic··on Replacing Pull Requests with Delta
At least traditionally, software engineers avoided everything except coding for a long time, but now i guess that's changed

Curious to see what happens when the fashion cycle runs its course and skinny jeans are in again and these big phones don't fit in our pockets anymore. Will phones get smaller or will we stop carrying them around and instead use wearables and retinal implants?

subarctic··on Corporate America is getting hooked on open-source AI
Re this point

> As for intelligence, the frontier models from OpenAI and Anthropic are still superior, and they have at least a 3-6 month head start. Distilled models are closing the gap on some metrics, but they still can't compete. That's why they cost so much less.

I would argue that the reason they cost so little is because anyone can run open models and offer them as a service, so there's actual competition and the price is closer to cost. i.e. if the open models were just as intelligent as frontier models but cost the same to run as they do right now, the price wouldn't be higher (unless demand went up so high that marginal cost to provide more of the service went up, due to scarcity of hardware and or electricicy).

On the other hand, if what you're saying is the frontier labs have some pricing power due to their models being better, and that is the reason they are able to charge more than the companies providing open models as a service, then I would agree.

subarctic··on Discontinuation of third level domain registrations for the .name TLD [pdf]
Wait, if it was only firstname.lastname.name, how was he able to register firstnamelastname.name? Does it let you register 2nd level domains if you get there before someone else registers a 3rd level domain that uses the 2nd level domain that you want to register?
