scientific facts are being distorted for political reasons, especially on certain controversial topics, several examples:

1. Major medical associations now claim sex is "assigned at birth" rather than being a biological reality determined at conception. The author argues this is scientifically inaccurate but is being asserted to defend transgender rights.

2. Some researchers investigating statistical differences in human traits by sex or race have faced campaigns to cancel them and damage their careers. This has a chilling effect on academic freedom and open debate.

3. In New Zealand, indigenous Maori knowledge was granted equal status to science in the curriculum. Some argued it has "equal value" to scientific knowledge. The author sees this as an example of postmodernist ideas entering education policy.

4. There are growing calls to "decolonize" science curricula and "decenter whiteness." The author argues the proper focus should be on the universal truths of science and math themselves, not exaggerating their history.

5. The journal Nature announced it could refuse to publish articles that undermine the "rights and dignities" of human groups. The author fears this vague standard enables ideological censorship.

sturza··on Project Gameface launches on Android
here are the key facts of what happened:

1. Oz Ramos developed an open source project called Handsfree.js starting in 2018 to help make computing more accessible, inspired by helping someone at a homeless shelter recovering from a stroke.

2. Around 1-2 years ago, Laurence Moroney from Google asked Oz about using Handsfree.js for accessibility. Oz showed him demos of Handsfree.js and related projects like a gesture mapper.

3. Oz asked Laurence for support and collaboration, but felt Laurence ghosted him after getting information about his projects.

4. Google later released Project Gameface, which has similarities to Oz's work in using computer vision for accessibility. Oz felt Google stole his ideas instead of supporting him.

5. Oz posted about this publicly on GitHub, accusing Google and Laurence of stealing his work when they could have supported his open source efforts while he struggled with poverty and mental health issues.

6. The post gained attention on social media and Hacker News. Many criticized Google based on Oz's account.

7. Laurence responded stating Project Gameface was inspired by Lance Carr, not Oz's work. He explained Handsfree.js did not solve a specific technical problem he inquired about.

8. Laurence said he could not directly financially support Oz the way he requested, and directed him to Google's formal processes for charitable giving and support.

9. Oz apologized for accusing Laurence of literal theft and the emotional tone of his posts. He explained he was struggling and felt validation-seeking from their interaction.

10. Laurence accepted the apology but noted the severe reputational damage and harassment he faced from the public accusation.

11. Oz deleted his repos and expressed regret over the harm caused. A professor retracted his earlier criticism of Laurence.

sturza··on Why Elon Musk fired the entire Tesla Supercharger staff
The day before the mass firings, Tesla charging chief Rebecca Tinucci met with Elon Musk about the charging network's future.

Tinucci had recently cut 15-20% of Supercharger staff as part of wider Tesla layoffs.

In the meeting, Musk was displeased with Tinucci's presentation and wanted more layoffs. When Tinucci pushed back, saying deeper cuts would undermine the charging business, Musk fired her and her entire 500-member team.

sturza··on Ask HN: How do news API services get their data/content?
Last time i build a real time news service i used the paid API of Inoreader, where i'd manage my own RSS feeds on their platform, and i'd poll their API every once in a while. Inoreader API would cost ~100 per year, not month. To directly answer your question: they use RSS.

sturza··on Show HN: Book rewrite (reduction of 40-60%) service with LLMs
Summaries are easier to generate, but making it shorter, still having the author's voice, is more appropriate for my goals. I've tried a lot of summary iterations and it turns out i don't want to read ABOUT the text.

It's still reading it, just by the time you get to 50% of the book, you could have finished it, with more details than a summary. A summary can be as short as 5-20%.

My description does not capture what the output is really, check the rewrite and see if you miss anything critical.

sturza··on Ask HN: Summarising Kindle books in your library
I've built something that takes chunks of a book, in order, like 2-3 pages, and rewrites them in a more condensed format, like 40-60% of the original. Is this something useful to you?
