Rivian | MLOps & DevOps engineer | Palo Alto (ONSITE or REMOTE)

https://grnh.se/25b640213us

We’re looking for MLOps and DevOps engineers to join us in building the software-defined, data-driven factory of the future. We love using modern tools tools like terraform, kubernetes, kubeflow, and dbt (to name a few) to automate our our workflows and allow data scientists to train, deploy and monitor models that make production decisions on the factory floor every single day. If this sounds interesting to you, head on over to https://grnh.se/25b640213us so we can get in touch.

Why is this being downvoted when it’s demonstrably true. The people being hit the hardest where the ones already in economically precarious situations
strangemonad··on 30% Faster Rust Build Times using Cranelift instead of the LLVM
(llvm monoculture comments aside) I find it really interesting that llvm isn’t able to be used in a similar way and achieve similar speed gains for incremental debug builds. Especially since swift debug build times probably matter enough for Apple to want to have a similar fast path with an llvm tool chain
strangemonad··on AWS forked my project and launched it as its own service
Honestly, even putting aside the social and community aspects. When I’m evaluating a technical offering I’m often very willing to pay for “hosted xyz”. I feel like I’m reading through the tea leaves to understand which AWS product offering is more or less a hosted offering of an open source product and what additions AWS has made that might change performance characteristics. Even without upstreaming changes, if the offering were pitched as “hosted X with these additions unique to aws” I would likely choose the hosted option over operating it myself.

It goes without saying though that supporting the open source core (and the core developers) would also go a long way.

strangemonad··on The magic of mushrooms forces us to rethink what intelligence means
There are already several ways to do this sort of bioremediation using mushrooms as bio-sponges (Eg for heavy metals). There’s the question of where to safely store those mushroom after the heavy metal is absorbed.

Important tangent, mushroom’s ability to absorb elements of its environment is a strong case for eating only organic mushrooms from known sources. Heavy metals like lead and mercury have been found in edible mushrooms from questionable sources.

strangemonad··on Hash: A free, online platform for modeling
Meant to agree with your reply, the comment was for the post you were replying to. We have lots of data but that doesn’t mean we have widely distributed understanding. Data != understandable models of the world. We need much more of the later.
strangemonad··on Hash: A free, online platform for modeling
That’s conflating availability of lots of data with ability to understand though.

strangemonad··on AMD Rome – is it for real? Architecture and initial HPC performance
Even the sensational title “Rome: is it real”. Obviously it’s real. It’s fair to ask “how does it perform in real world scenarios”
strangemonad··on The lat/lon floating point delusion
The 2D pixels in the projected satellite image will never map to a precise gps lat lng coordinate. These gps coordinates are also just a rough approximation of dead reconned coordinate systems that actually define the parcels.

You can easily try and overlay county parcel data into google earth and see how many features don’t align with the sat imagery.

strangemonad··on MLton Compiler Overview
I see lots of comments about how the multiple passes have to do with limited resources like memory. In MLton’s case, (it’s a whole program optimizing compiler) each trasnlation phase has nothing to do with resource contention. And in general, limited resources is typically handled by separate compilation, not compiler passes.

The more important design choices here have to do with 1) Typed assembly languages (rather than untyped assymbly languages) 2) Type directed translation (rather than syntax directed translation) 3) The ability to reason about the correctness of each step of the translation as the program is gradually lowered from SML to assembly.

For more on the typed assembly language work, check out the work of Morissett and Harper that came out of CMU (specifically the TIL / TAL parts of the ConCert project). The XML type system was developed a little bit before that by Harper and Lillibridge. The general idea of a language being a mathematical object with an elaboration and a semantics where you can reason about progress and preservation at each step is a result of the vision of Robin Milner (there’s a good overview here http://homepages.inf.ed.ac.uk/stg/Milner2012/R_Harper-html4-...)

strangemonad··on Cloud Identity
I’ve deployed Auth0 in production before (and quickly glanced through gcloud identity). This seems aimed at larger enterprises (both in terms of features and pricing). Imagine an enterprize trying to deploy ldap or active directory in the cloud age and keeping all accounts in sync with various SaaS.

Auth0 can be used that way but with some work. It really shines when you want to build saas that requires user login. Auth0 is worth every penny (priced by active logins) but I’d be hard pressed to spend 4$ per user if I’m building a consumer saas (but 4$ per employee login is reasonable).
