stormcode··on Fitbit is now officially part of Google
If we do enter the Snow Crash mega corp/gated burb future I want to become a Deliverator for the pizza mafia.

I'm also not for this. I wasn't for nest either. I now trust the device on my wrist less.

stormcode··on Slack is down
I'm from New England, I grew up with the informal definition and was super surprised when I heard the formal one.
stormcode··on Slack is down
Oh yeah, those were the days. Causing server splits to get your nick back that was stolen in a previous server split...
stormcode··on The YouTube ban is un-American, wrong, and will backfire
I used to strongly believe this but now I think we've moved beyond having a public discourse and into things that are not protected speech. The president and others inciting violence against people doing their jobs, and those that are megaphoning those claims and calls to action deserve to be shutdown and deplatformed before someone is killed.
stormcode··on How I got to $9.99 MRR after 7 years
I'm about this MRR life. I should call my Mom...
stormcode··on My Latest Brush with the Corporate Internet: GitHub Has My Stolen Code
That's a bit disingenuous. Asserting their rights over software they wrote that was blatantly stolen doesn't make them a bad person, as you seem to be implying.
stormcode··on My Latest Brush with the Corporate Internet: GitHub Has My Stolen Code
A world where the true author of software(or anything) can't get it taken down when it has been stolen isn't great.

Company's should be held responsible. If you are allowing a vehicle for theft, you need to have reasonable anti-theft procedures in place. We can't let corporations deny their own responsibility here.

stormcode··on My Latest Brush with the Corporate Internet: GitHub Has My Stolen Code
Sadly, this is corporate America these days. We are living in the Cyberpunk future where corporations have the upper hand and are not required to provide an actual reasonable human to investigate or pass judgement on your issue. You see it with the algos that run user interfacing parts of Youtube, Facebook regularly.

It's messed up. I'm sorry your code got stolen.

stormcode··on My Latest Brush with the Corporate Internet: GitHub Has My Stolen Code
It costs money. Many people rely on the fact that lawyers are expensive as a defacto deterrent from legal action.
stormcode··on Discord bans me for using their official client
Mastodon can de-platform you just as easily as Discord if they don't like what you say.
stormcode··on Facebook Says It Will Stop Operating in Europe If Regulators Don’t Back Down
Right? The world would be a better place.

It's really hard to drum up any kind of pro-facebook feelings. Boo-boo, facebook. You've had a free ride with user data for years. They are no different than mobile advertisers complaining that they have a right to people's private data.

stormcode··on Covid-19 Round 2 is Here
I'm with you here. I found this article useful and informative. Why is this being flagged?
stormcode··on Big Sur: “Warning: PHP is not recommended”
Seems to be more about Apple telling people what is and isn't recommended software.
stormcode··on LambdaMOO takes a new direction (1992)
Check out Sindome: https://www.sindome.org/ it's a cyberpunk MOO been online since '97 and is running a modified LambdaMOO.
stormcode··on LambdaMOO takes a new direction (1992)
More resources for those interested, probably the most comprehensive and up to date site: https://lisdude.com/moo/
stormcode··on LambdaMOO takes a new direction (1992)
If you are looking for an interesting LambdaMOO like MOO to check out, I'd recommend ChatMUD (it runs a fork of LambdaMOO called ToastStunt). You can connect from the we. Using this webclient: http://pubclient.sindome.org/player-client/?gh=chatmud.com&g...
stormcode··on Music for Programming (2011)
Same experience here. The downside is situations where people end up standing behind or near me to get my attention. Have been startled many times. Still, for an open office they seem a must have.
stormcode··on Self Programming Language
This language also inspired LambdaMOO (created by another Xerox Parc employee) which is another early example of a prototype based language, with its own built in environment, but it's all text based. I'd heard about self in a talk, but hadn't read the docs until now. Super cool reading about it now. Good slice of history.
stormcode··on Iconoclast: a Gothic/Cyberpunk MUD RPG, Online Since 1996
www.sindome.org / moo.sindome.org 5555

Cyberpunk MUD. Been online since 1997. It has a web client which is great, but continue to support mud clients and simple telnet. No color, ansi, xterm256 all supported.

Has good accessibility options as well. Very friendly to visually imparied with special code for stripping out stuff like ascii art.

Roleplay enforced. Has a detailed timeline and wiki. 50-60 people online at anytime. Good and well trained staff.

stormcode··on Ask HN: If my company bills me out at $165/hr what should my salary be?
This is pretty accurate for me thank you!
stormcode··on TransitMatters, a transit advocacy group in Boston
I lived in Quincy not far from the north Quincy redline stop. Aside from the typical delays it was pretty affordable and there is grocery and shopping in walking distance for the most part. Waltham has gotten a bit expensive the past few years.
stormcode··on Life on the Internet Is Hard When Your Last Name Is 'Butts'
Ahhh, I'm being down voted for saying this isn't actually hard.

Maybe having the last name Butts on the internet IS hard after all.

(In case it's not clear, this is my last name)

The only trouble I have ever had was Facebook locking me out of my account in 2011 and making me send them a photo of my ID before being let back in. Took a month.

The funny thing is I have a random Facebook account with a totally fake city and name for a character in a game I play, and never had any trouble with that!

Never had a registration problem on any site, though.

stormcode··on Life on the Internet Is Hard When Your Last Name Is 'Butts'
Agreed.
stormcode··on Welcome to Armageddon: On MUDs (2017)
Shameless Plug: Sindome also has an excellent web client and has been online 21 years. Https://www.sindome.org
stormcode··on Life on the Internet Is Hard When Your Last Name Is 'Butts'
As much of a chuckle as I got from this article... It's actually not hard.
stormcode··on Ask HN: Recommendations of good cybercrime novels?
Stephenson is more post cyberpunk really.
stormcode··on Six Months at Riot Games
I've played league for 3 years, and have been a game developer for 12.
stormcode··on Six Months at Riot Games
Just because something is the predominant culture does not make it right or okay.

It's not like going to France and getting offended that everyone is speaking French.

Strip clubs, tit jokes, objectifying others, homophobic slander, and transphobia as part of a company 'culture' is toxic.

stormcode··on Ask HN: What are the best bio-hacking tips for programmers?
Hack your mind. Meditate.

Get the Headspace app or pick up a book on meditation and get going. Nothing will improve your concentration more. It takes consistent practice every day, but not as much time as you might think. Ten minutes five days a week treats me pretty well.

And get enough natural sunlight. It will help you sleep better. It will improve your mood. If you can't go natural, get a sun lamp.

stormcode··on Ask HN: Organizing company knowledge?
Team drive is a gsuite feature one found handy. It has to be turned on in older gsuites as it's a newer feature but it is on automatically in newer ones.

It is good for defining structure and permissions at an org level for files and folders and solves that pesky problem of documents not being accessible if the Creator of them has their account shut down.
