stolsvik··on Hetzner Price Adjustment
My question to that is: Why do you? Why on earth do people want to tie themselves so hard to a specific mast?
stolsvik··on Ask HN: Why is the HN crowd so anti-AI?
HN was - and probably still is - very negative to Bitcoin. Which always puzzled me. But I’ve realized: To grasp such concepts, you can’t only be good at code.
stolsvik··on The dead economy theory
You can not have done any calculus on cloud costs? Capex -> opex is the only thing they fix. But the costs are way higher.
stolsvik··on Running Tesla Model 3's computer on my desk using parts from crashed cars
You really must be new to this, huh? Expensive software that you paid for?! Claude? Yes, the question is whether you want to share knowledge that cost you literally nothing, and will bring humanity one microscopic step in a better direction - or not, feeling superior in that only you have access to that knowledge. You have a choice!
stolsvik··on The Fed says this is a cube of $1M. They're off by half a million
In Norwegian that means 9:30. It is indeed very common, that’s how we say every x:30. It’s «halfway to ten» or something.
stolsvik··on The Who Cares Era
I'm just trying to catch up with you after the "I get so confused on this"-screenshot that's evidently going viral wrt. LLMs. I just turned 50, and that resonated so hard.

Wrt. this feeling you're describing here: You might mostly be feeling the Enshittification. At least that's a big thing for me. Companies are not making things better, they are making everything worse. Instead of actually making new stuff, they're wringing the existing lemon five extra times to squeeze that last drop of juice out of it, adding one extra ad in the youtube viewing, making it harder to integrate. APIs being deprecated, walled gardens. Things have been going downhill for at least a decade. This makes me sad.

Correct. It is insane. Bonkers. Absurd. How the hell can you live with that-stupid.

stolsvik··on Using an 8K TV as a Monitor
A tad surprised that curvature isn't discussed? With such a massive screen, the distance from your eye to the middle of the screen, and eye to the corners, are very different - unless you sit far away. Your eyes thus need to change focus all the time. That's AFAIK why those ultra wide screens are curved - and I find that the more curve they have (smaller radius), the better it is. With such a massive screen, I guess it would be best if it was part of a sphere! (Curved both ways)

stolsvik··on Re-creating Disney's sodium vapor process [video]
A bit light on the detail of how the standard green-screen process works in post: I'd prefer a bit deeper dive into the problems one encounter. And then compared harder to how this became easier with the sodium lights, compare and contrast. I think that was glossed over too fast. Otherwise really interesting!
stolsvik··on DBRX: A new open LLM
Probably OpenAI running on Azure. But it was still convoluted.
stolsvik··on How Chain-of-Thought Reasoning Helps Neural Networks Compute
I thought this was obvious: They lack an “inner voice” (80% of humans?) or “inner imagery” (the rest) as we humans do, so they cannot first think the problem through before answering. Thus, using the actual “output area” as such a scratch pad can help it cover a larger area of reasoning before outputting an answer - just as we do.

I feel you can even see this when you ask it certain questions with “think in steps” prompting: It can output temporary thoughts which aren’t of use in the final answer - again just as we do when attacking a problem we can’t immediately answer.

Also, we humans often use pen and paper to jot down temporary and intermediary thoughts and answers. Again, LLMs don’t have that, but can use the output as something similar.

Some styles of ToT prompting actually make the LLM have two types of output - one for its “inner voice thinking”, and then another for output meant for the human. The same goes when one give the LLM method calling abilities, or “googling”: This can be seen as a way to perform thinking and reasoning without output meant for the user, before formulating an answer.

stolsvik··on Emad Mostaque resigned as CEO of Stability AI
You should probably post some citations to that. Tether most probably have backing for every single dollar they have, and then plenty more. What about it is “blood money”?
stolsvik··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
As an iPhone user: Fantastic. I so hope Apple looses hard.
stolsvik··on Grok
Where is this? I googled a bit, and found the game - but using it as a benchmark sounds genious!!
stolsvik··on This week, xAI will open source Grok
While I agree there is a common understanding of what open source is, there most definitely does not exist any "binding definition"! It is not trademarked, copyrighted (and it never could have been, two common words that it is), or in any country's legally protected terms, or anything else. It is really grating to see such nonsense repeated way to often.

There are two different "available in these regions" URLs.

The one for chat: https://www.anthropic.com/claude-ai-locations

The one for API: https://www.anthropic.com/supported-countries

The latter has Norway in it, while the former does not. One wonders why.

This was great, and specifically regards overlaying video on a HDMI signal, explicitly without needing to actually decode the HDMI data stream, thus not violating DMCA.

This is obviously not an isolated incident. Bitcoin University has put a comment on their video about the problem, and Michael Saylor of MicroStrategy (who is being impersonated) has published several xeets about the multiple scams, both highlighting the issue.
