stolson··on For-profit college cancels $500M in student debt after fraud allegations
> More than 90 percent of its students are enrolled through online courses, according to the company.

That's a huge number. I believe online education is going to be an important part of college education, but that's almost the entire student body. Good to see this debt being cancelled.

Likewise.

The title is pretty awful, but when the gig marketplace model devalues your work so much - why participate in it?

I understand Uber & Lyft are the exception here, they really have tanked the finances of traditional cab drivers. On the other hand, I think most of the other services offered this way can really be circumvented by differentiating yourself as better than the gig workers.

Anyone have any anecdotes about other industries being impacted like this?

Good on them. Companies like Palantir have thousands of people building these types of systems, it's nice to know there are peers of ours standing up those less privileged.
stolson··on Is capitalism a threat to democracy?
Unchecked capitalism and barely regulated monopolies? Absolutely. But that's a less flashy headline.

You know, it's crazy but things like Brooklinen slowly worm their way into people's heads that they need this kind of stuff.

I'm sure that they're nice sheets, but I just hear more and more "I've heard they're really great quality/convenient/etc" and the actual anecdote where they got this is several degrees removed. The ads just look nice.

stolson··on 90-minute ‘super commutes’ more common as Bay Area housing shortage intensifies
My commute ranges anywhere from 35 minutes to 90 minutes. It used to be pretty consistently under an hour to mostly anywhere in Manhattan south of Central Park, but the past few years have been pretty terrible (thanks MTA).
stolson··on Apple will start paying $21B in back taxes to Ireland
If only.
stolson··on Facebook Employees Are Quitting or Switching Departments Over Ethical Concerns
"Over Ethical Concerns"

Maybe over concerns that their department is in limbo due to the general public's concern, but I can't imagine they have been working on their projects and only now found ethical issues with them.

stolson··on The health care toll today’s work culture exacts on employees
To the deli guy - I've had this experience too. When you meet someone who has what Americans would consider a "high school" job or "work between jobs" is very much someone's only job, it's really hard to wrap your head around it.
