stochastimus··on Ask HN: Why is this C Programming Book Worth $674.99
Price discovery is not rational, it's sociological. I still remember the "I Am Rich" iPhone app.
stochastimus··on A static file server in x86 Assembly
I think this is really cool. For simple stuff where you just want light and fast, it's good to see an ASM rewrite.
stochastimus··on Electrical Compartmentalization in Neurons
Why the "compartments" (subunits) matter so much:

"The computational significance of these subunits arises from their ability to support independent regenerative events... When triggered independently, these local regenerative events are predicted to enable individual neurons to function as two-layer neural networks."

That is to say, every individual neuron is in and of itself a two-layer network. Think about that.

stochastimus··on Lexical differential highlighting instead of syntax highlighting
This is really cool. It kinda looks like rainbow salad, but who cares? For me at least, it is much easier to visually parse.
stochastimus··on I Tried Emailing Like a CEO
I never thought of this before. I guess the tl;dr is, in email replies, less words is better.
stochastimus··on Heavybit's Venture Fund
A Heavybit fund could be a force in bringing continuous deployment to the rest of the world that just isn’t there yet, even though they want to be. LaunchDarkly came out of Heavybit and I love their message. Those interested might enjoy the ToBeContinuous podcast with Paul Biggar (Dark/CircleCI founder) and Edith Harbaugh who I believe is the LaunchDarkly founder. I find it insightful on the space.
stochastimus··on Sugary drinks and cancer risk: results from NutriNet-Santé prospective cohort
This is the kind of study you would have thought would have been done decades ago. Super relevant. I wonder why it’s taken so long.
stochastimus··on Curious About Consciousness? Ask the Self-Aware Machines
Here’s the tl;dr and it’s awesome:

“A system that can simulate itself is to some degree self-aware... We said, “Let’s take all that infrastructure that people have made to help robots learn about the world, and we’re going to turn it inside, on itself.””

stochastimus··on Ask HN: What does culture fit mean?
a.) is this someone I could enjoy working with: personality, openness, intellectual honesty, work ethic, passion for work, etc.

b.) is this person higher on give or take: seemingly very interested in contractual benefits they will receive, seemingly uninterested in value they can add

c.) technical culture: e.g., are you walking into a “move fast and break things” company with a “six-nines-reliability” mentality, or vice-versa?

stochastimus··on Pa$$Word Doesn't Matter
Right? I’m tired of ridiculous-still-inadequate hoops some websites try to make you jump through such as “add a number”, or “add an uppercase letter”, etc. - it really doesn’t matter. If this is an account I need to protect, I’ll use a password manager.
stochastimus··on Sqlite to Rest
I’m so glad to see this work and other projects like it. The relational database doesn’t need to be abandoned to put any interface over it you like.
stochastimus··on Why the Why Matters
I really like this line of thinking. But also I have noticed that schools do not teach our children enough of any particular skill to be competent. It is true that to achieve mastery one must see more broadly. But I think also that to achieve mastery one must have achieved competence. One must have obtained a cup to empty, in Zen parlance. Before we can forget the details, we must learn them. Before we can overcome our preconceptions, we must form them.
stochastimus··on Slackor – A Golang Implant That Uses Slack as a Command and Control Server
My comment that said "ru13z" got flagged and I don't know why, but I meant to say I really enjoyed this article.
stochastimus··on John Gustafson’s crusade to replace floating point with something better
This is awesome. Doubling performance for free sounds good to me.
stochastimus··on Naive Bayes and Disease Detection
This is such a simple yet critical concept, it's worth everyone's time to understand it, data scientist or not.
