I've had my google activity turned off for a long time. Every so often they add a new privacy item so I keep checking back in every few months. https://myactivity.google.com/myactivity . Unless you use google services a lot, I'd suggest turning it off. You will lose personalized searches though. That doesn't matter much to me though, as they seem to get worse over time and not better.
At this point in my life, I just don't have time. I basically use either mp4 or PNG for all web "images/animation" when doing web pages. I don't detect browsers or the like. Unless there is some revolutionary new image/video tech, I'll stick with them for the foreseeable future. I only bother with JPEG when it's straight from the phone/camera and I don't want any reduction in quality from the original high rez.
I don't think lack of tech bros manning high cost corporate square footage is what is causing the homeless, crime, and addiction problems in West Coast cities. It seems more like bad policies to me. The time window to blame everything on covid is passing quickly
I suspect that it's simply ease of use. Sure you can use a mish mash of self hosting, online dedicated services, etc, but this looks more simple and cohesive and for $20 a year you don't have to worry about the overhead of all those other things, you just add the content you want and don't worry about the details.
I can't agree. It's much better to have a voluntary opt out like with robots.txt. I would say one of the top 10 observations about the internet is that you should consider anything posted publically there will last forever and treat it as such, otherwise you're doing yourself a disservice. Just one guy's opinion, though.
Gnome developers gave pretty thorough reasons why they made certain changes in UI and code design, or was I hallucinating that period of my life? I mean, just because one doesn't like designers' choices doesn't equate to "couldn't extract reasoning". Also, it's their project, and I hate that they ignored the user community it still fell under their authority to do it and let users decide if they would tolerate it or move to a different windowing system. Personally I just moved back to KDE and have stayed there, other than very limited resource systems where I use lxde or just straight terminal+tmux.
and most times it's not really any value added; it's something lame like "this other popular product does it this way" or "industry standard" or "our human optimization team found this was better" and give the middle finger to previous users. It happens with all interfaces, but people look to stuff like emacs and vim to be better than that
I'm still a drip man but after about 20 years of trying all kinds of coffee, french press is still what I fall back to when I'm not in a hurry and want just a smooth flavorful coffee. I always grind my coffee and use within a day or two, nothing smells as nice as fresh ground.
yeah, I have a small electric ceramic burr grinder and I dont' have any of these problems. I also have a blade grinder for when I'm in a hurry/have guests. Still no problems, I might lose 1% to static.
I don't remember anyone "clutching pearls" over https by default? Do you have any suggested references where I can find those? I do recall people really complaining that anything at all was allowed to be http, even sites that most people would consider "unimportant".
I don't know what the fix is but that's impossible. Israel has to stay a relatively united nation with a powerful military and nuclear power status or the Arab nations will immediately bulldoze it.
Other than basic needs is there "human nature" ? Some people will give you the last bite of food, others will lie to you to add to their hoard. I think laws are to make sure we all are on an even playing field (as much as possible) and to deter from the worst aspects of -some- humans who tend to be bad actors. Obviously that's ideally. A lot of times laws enacted by dictators/oppressive religions are there to keep people miserable and afraid and power for the elite (whether communists, capitalists, religiofascists, etc)
one way might be to demarcate civility as important as technical knowledge and allow people to get pitched by mod vote if they become snarky. Just a guess. I wish that was a rule on reddit for sure. Essentially disallowing fiefdoms
I guess if your context is only one generation then yes. However, these long term projects are as much for future generations as now. They are also a tiny tiny percentage of the world's GDP
