stingrae··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
“A 5 GW data center would require a solar array with dimensions of approximately 4 km by 4 km”

I think dodging debris is challenging at that scale.

Also this is the solar cells not the radiators

stingrae··on On the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem
the model is a set of weights, you can take a snapshot and test it. Reinforcement learning itself is largely testing and tuning.
stingrae··on Show HN: Open-Source eInk Bike Computer
be careful how you mount it, make sure that there is enough dampening. people have had issues with excessive vibration and damaging the OIS and focusing motors in the cameras.
stingrae··on Show HN: Open-Source eInk Bike Computer
what is insane, is that ble is largely unsecured in modern implementations. when testing, i kept picking up everyones whoops/assorted ble devices spamming out heart rate data to whomever wanted to connect.
stingrae··on Show HN: Open-Source eInk Bike Computer
note using a phone mounted to a bike or motorcycle can cause damage over time to the camera assembly especially the motors used for OIS. depending on how much you ride or the quality of the roads you ride, it could be an issue.

your project does look amazing. sorry that the appstore team is holding things up.

RE: ANT+, a hackrf one and fable was key to the hack.

refresh rate is sort of a non issue. i can push the refresh rate to up to 20Hz, it is largely unnecessary for this project.

it has a nice backlight (basically identical to a kindle display)

color is fair, but i dont miss it.

i do absolutely love how readable it is in direct sunlight (when im mostly riding)

stingrae··on Show HN: Open-Source eInk Bike Computer
i can push it as high as 20Hz.
stingrae··on Show HN: Open-Source eInk Bike Computer
yes me too. i may be working on something...
stingrae··on Show HN: Open-Source eInk Bike Computer
technically i dont think the coros uses an eink display. but it is definitely one of the cooler bike computers.
stingrae··on Show HN: Open-Source eInk Bike Computer
I hadnt heard of it. I will check it out.
stingrae··on Show HN: Open-Source eInk Bike Computer
i have been using it in my car during commutes for testing. modern eink displays can do pretty high refresh rates. i think i can hit 20hz.
stingrae··on Show HN: Open-Source eInk Bike Computer
i have ridden with this unit over five hundred miles and not had any issues. though SF Bay Area summers arent as tough as other places.
stingrae··on Show HN: Open-Source eInk Bike Computer
yes. they luckily the same phy, 1 Mbit/s GFSK modulation.
stingrae··on Flock Safety's controversial CEO just got a taste of his own medicine
Basically yes. There are a large number of public repositories of data that can dox a persons address. Like property tax rolls, company filings etc. some of these are actually required by Europe (https://developer.apple.com/help/app-store-connect/manage-co..., which I do not appreciate)
stingrae··on Show HN: A website for exploring historical photographs of my city
Nice! there is a website with a similar concept for San Francisco: https://opensfhistory.org/maps/index.php
stingrae··on Can the stockmarket swallow Anthropic, SpaceX and OpenAI?
they should wait for the major lockups to pass, there by skipping some of the inevitable volatility they will likely cause.
stingrae··on The IBM-ification of Google?
I tried to test an ad in the meta ad platform… and it is insanely terrible. Teams don’t care about B2B software even if it drives the business or there aren’t viable competitors.
stingrae··on Iliad fragment found in Roman-era mummy
This reminds me of a piece I just saw at the Legion of Honor (SF) special exhibit on the etruscans. They have a Etruscan manuscript, written on linen, that was used to wrap a mummy. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liber_Linteus
stingrae··on Waymo says can't avoid bike lanes because riders want to be dropped off in them
I think this is a bigger factor for Lyft/uber where the passenger rating impacts the driver directly. Passengers are annoyed anytime their pickup isn’t directly in front of them on the street. They will down rate a driver that pulls into a legal spot farther away then a spot blocking a bike lane directly in front of them.

This is less of an issue for Waymo, because the passenger rating doesn’t mean as much except customer satisfaction with the service as a whole.

stingrae··on Meta to start capturing employee mouse movements, keystrokes for AI training
If it is available for training, I assume it is available for discovery.
stingrae··on SpaceX says it has agreement to acquire Cursor for $60B
"SpaceXAI and @cursor_ai are now working closely together to create the world’s best coding and knowledge work AI.

The combination of Cursor’s leading product and distribution to expert software engineers with SpaceX’s million H100 equivalent Colossus training supercomputer will allow us to build the world’s most useful models.

Cursor has also given SpaceX the right to acquire Cursor later this year for $60 billion or pay $10 billion for our work together."

im on a mac and had the same issue.

other bugs: when i pan around (while zoomed far in), the planes arent in a fixed position on the map, they shift with the pan

ux bug: when i zoom in, it zooms into the middle of the browser window instead of where my cursor is.

stingrae··on Astral to Join OpenAI
The risk is one of them buys it and pulls an Oracle / Java (Sun) stunt.
stingrae··on The Brand Age
I felt this way until I worked at Essential, the now shut down phone maker.

One of the core company design principles was to have minimal branding. The phone design had no logo. When you show it to people they are looking for the identifier and it's completely missing. When you are in a market where most of the products look largely the same, branding is very important.

It's unfortunate, but absolutely necessary.

stingrae··on A16z partner says that the theory that we’ll vibe code everything is wrong
It doesn't make sense for every company to make their own Salesforce clone.

The key is that it makes new companies entering the market to compete with Salesforce immensely easier. More competition will just force lower overall margins in SAAS.

stingrae··on Anthropic officially bans using subscription auth for third party use
It’s happening already? Ask any new CS grads about how good the job market is.
stingrae··on Anthropic officially bans using subscription auth for third party use
the path is by charging just a bit less than the salary of the engineers they are replacing.
stingrae··on xAI joins SpaceX
arbitrarily large means like measured in square km. Starcloud is talking about 4km x 4km area of solar panels and radiative cooling. (https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/starcloud/)

Building this is definitely not trivial and not easy to make arbitrarily large.

stingrae··on New YC homepage
yeah i think the scroll speed is too fast. that would fix all the issues.
stingrae··on Keeping 20k GPUs healthy
seems like it would be an issue for building datacenters in space/orbit
