stilley2··on Everything in C is undefined behavior
Does that mean that if I have a struct with #pragma pack(push, 1) I can't use pointers to any members that don't happen to be aligned?
stilley2··on Meta replaces WhatsApp for Windows with web wrapper
I wonder if it's intentional and making everyone get copilot is the goal
stilley2··on Meta replaces WhatsApp for Windows with web wrapper
Speaking of new outlook, has anyone else had search just...not work? I'll search for emails sent from myself, to myself (of which I know there are hundreds) and get 7 results. Same in the web app, but outlook classic works fine. Mind boggling
stilley2··on An open source initiative to share and compare heat pump performance data
I recommend this technology connections video which dives into this in wonderful detail https://youtu.be/DTsQjiPlksA?si=gx18FGOcjsv5PpNg
stilley2··on Rclone syncs your files to cloud storage
I gave up on the onedrive client and switched to rclone to access SharePoint at work. It's more manual but it always works! The onedrive client was great when it worked, but when it started misbehaving there was no real way to fix it besides reinstall and start over
stilley2··on DRM-free e-books are a big deal (2019)
For what it's worth Canadian Amazon also has them DRM free
stilley2··on Carrefour puts ‘shrinkflation’ price warnings on food to shame brands
But as a consumer I don't want to have to check the price/mass in every product everything I shop, especially if I'm buying the same brand every week.
stilley2··on Client harassed by The Type founders for using Proxima Nova font on website
I received a similar email from Type Founders despite the fact that my website does not provide or even specify a specific font to use (besides things like size and sand serif). I got the impression it was either a shakedown or a very broadly aimed and poorly executed attempt to recovering licensing fees.
stilley2··on Show HN: Laser, a new game played on a chess board
Reminds me of https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khet_(game)
stilley2··on Remove “This incident will be reported.” from user warnings
I once entered 'sudo echo hi" or something similar on a large HPCC and received an email back from a sysadmin that just said "hello".
stilley2··on Samsung “space zoom” moon shots are fake, and here is the proof
Yeah the author glossed over this a bit in my opinion. In infinite precision math you're correct, but at some point the signal in those higher frequencies is going to be reduced below the precision of the storage data type, never mind the dynamic range of the monitor and camera he's using.
stilley2··on Please put units in names
Not GP, but 0.5% == 0.005, not 0.5.
stilley2··on Fastmail, Runbox, and Posteo under DDoS extortion attack
Just to add a data point, I had trouble accessing fastmail early this morning (around 7 EDT). I haven't had any issues since then.
stilley2··on Fastmail, Runbox, and Posteo under DDoS extortion attack
If they're using a botnet of compromised servers then I suspect the marginal cost is negligible.
stilley2··on Google Drive of historical footage locked and flagged as terrorist activity
https://github.com/apprenticeharper/DeDRM_tools works pretty well once setup. Allegedly...
stilley2··on How strong would a magnetic field have to be to kill you?
I have a meteorite wedding band and we were passing it around outside the bore to feel how strong the pull was. A grad student lost their grip and the ring shot into the bore like a bullet. No damage luckily but it really drove home how dangerous these can be.
stilley2··on Pandora says laboratory-made diamonds are forever
My (now) wife picked out her engagement ring on Etsy. It's an antique ring with a sapphire gem. Of course that took away some of the surprise from the proposal, but we were of the opinion that the fact one wants to get married shouldn't be a surprise. And the time/place of the proposal can still be somewhat of a surprise, or at least special.
stilley2··on Young female Japanese biker is 50-year-old man using FaceApp
"I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study." -Ezra Cornell.

I'm not sure if they're offered anymore, but they used to have Basic Rifle Marksmanship and Epee de Guerre. My friend once told me he thought my major was "weapons".

stilley2··on Gradient Free Optimizers: A collection of modern optimization methods in Python
Ah nevermind I see this was addressed in another comment.
stilley2··on Gradient Free Optimizers: A collection of modern optimization methods in Python
Cool! I'd considering adding CMA-ES [1], which as far as I know is the gold standard for derivative free optimization.

stilley2··on It's 2030. I own nothing, have no privacy, and life has never been better (2016)
The author states their intent at the bottom

> Author's note: Some people have read this blog as my utopia or dream of the future. It is not. It is a scenario showing where we could be heading - for better and for worse. I wrote this piece to start a discussion about some of the pros and cons of the current technological development. When we are dealing with the future, it is not enough to work with reports. We should start discussions in many new ways. This is the intention with this piece.

stilley2··on Why Johnny Won't Upgrade
For anyone else who had never heard this and wants some background: https://hackernoon.com/how-the-nintendo-switch-prevents-down...
stilley2··on FDA issues emergency use authorization for convalescent plasma
It's unfortunate how (blatantly) political this announcement is written, as opposed to scientific. I think announcements from FDA/CDC etc should be about the science, not the politics. But maybe I'm just being naive.
stilley2··on Lightroom app update wipes users' photos and presets, Adobe says not recoverable
I was just told it wasn't possible. So I cancelled my debit card (take that, paypal).
stilley2··on The ‘-ize’ have it (2012)
Yeah basically. I'm still not entirely clear what the British rules are.
stilley2··on The ‘-ize’ have it (2012)
Not spelling, but my wife (Canadian) and I (American) recently had an interesting discussion about the placement of a comma following a quoted portion of a sentence. Americans are commonly taught the comma /always/ goes before the closing quotation marks, whereas in British English it depends on the context. You know it's a good weekend discussion when the Chicago Manual of Style gets involved.
stilley2··on Google Drive – How do I stop others from sharing files with me?
And maybe this has changed, but I think the Microsoft support forum used to show the "accepted" answer twice, once in the thread and once in the accepted answer section. Or something similar; whatever it was I felt like I was reading the same thing twice.
stilley2··on Double Entry Accounting for Developers
Thanks, this was very helpful.
stilley2··on Is It Time to Kill the Penny?
> This is a key difference between US policy & Canadian policy that I have informally noticed while growing up on the border (with family ties on both sides).

My wife's Canadian and I'm American, and we've discussed this point too. My theory is that Canada's parliamentary system generally puts one party in charge of the executive and legislative, so it's easier for that party to get things done. Of course there are times when a party in the US controls both branches and we still struggle to get things done. I would assume that most larger changes happens on this scenarios though.

And of course the US seems to suffer from partisanship in general more than Canada, but I can't back that up.

stilley2··on An even worse anti-encryption bill than EARN IT
I'm not in favor of the bill, but a warrant is still required (at least for domestic stuff).
