stigi··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (August 2019)
Location: Berlin, Germany

Remote: Yes

Willing to relocate: No

Technologies: React-Native, Typescript, Swift, Objective-C, iOS, Android, Fastlane, Docker

Email: hi+hn@ullrich.is

I'm a mobile software engineer with 10 years of experience, working for startups like Soundcloud and established companies like Facebook. I've spent a significant part of my career working for consultancies (even co-founded one) and am looking to get back into the product space.

At my current role I got the chance gaining some people management experience, but I'm not ready to take an EM position just yet. I'm looking for a lead mobile role where I can contribute my experience in the mobile sector, but also my experience working with backend and product teams.

Thanks for checking me out.

stigi··on React Native tutorial
You lost me at

  yarn add native-base --save

  npm install @expo/vector-icons --save
When I read `native-base` I was all: ewww. Everybody I talk to who used it in previous project regretted it and build back.

Second, the mixture of yarn and npm in the code snippet shows that the author either didn't understand what they are doing, or does not care to lead with a clean example. It's okay to stick with only npm in a beginners tutorial.

Update: Also, why the Python prerequisite?

stigi··on Why Facebook still seems to spy on you
Facebook did offer @facebook.com email addresses starting end of 2010 and had them available until I believe 2014.

stigi··on Spectrum – Image transcoding library for Android or iOS
It's interesting to see no iOS example code in Swift.

I know that the Swift adoption rate at Facebook is low for certain reasons, but I was hoping it would go up, or at least be of concern for open sourced projects.

Isn‘t the summit of Chimborazo the farthest point from earths center?

stigi··on Python 3 at Facebook
Besides what other people have mentioned FB is also one of the biggest Mercurial (which is build in Python) users out there and has a few developers working on it exclusively.
stigi··on Ask HN: How to self-learn electronics?
Honest question: Why does a soldering iron need a firmware? Isn't it just enough to set a temperature? What other features are there?

stigi··on Steve Miller: The Whole Music Industry Is Fuckin' Gangsters and Crooks
Modern pop music follows strict patterns. I have little doubt that much of what's playing in the top 40 can be synthesized or already is :P

All that you need then is a human avatar that the kids can connect to and take as their role model.

stigi··on Hitler’s Flak Towers Were Anti-Aircraft Castles
I wonder what happened to the canon rounds that missed their target (that must have been most of them). There must be an entire region that must have gotten used to raining 128-millimeter bullets.

Apparently launch images in different sizes will go away and will be replaced by storyboards with auto layout

stigi··on Apple event overshadows unflattering news at Snapchat, Tinder
I wonder how such things become possible. As co-founders shouldn't you have a written (and lawyer checked) agreement on how the company is shared amongst you?

How can one betray the other besides of letting him/her unknowingly sign an unfortunate contract?

stigi··on Why Dyson's robot vacuum took 16 years, and why it's headed to Japan first
I was expecting a good argument on why it's launched in JA prior to US, UK or EU. Just the fact that Japan is a big adaptor for robotics doesn't make it. Roomba and others have established solid markets for that kind of product outside of Japan already. I hope Dyson can match the demand and will start selling the 360 eye globally soon.

stigi··on Ask HN: Which CRM for a solo-freelancer in 2014?
We've been using Highrise a while ago, but moved away from it quickly.

These days we use Trello with a card for each lead, where we keep track of the current status. The card moves between different states as we engage with the client (kanban style).

If you keep your mails in Gmail you already have a powerful tool to handle them and don't need CRM support for that.

stigi··on About the security content of iOS 7.0.6
Not much a problem of `goto` per se. Rather a problem with if conditions used without code blocks.

Others might say it's a problem of whitespace insensitive languages ;)

stigi··on Clean, Modern Objective-C
My points on Modern Objective-C:

  - Use MVVM and some method of bindings (e.g. ReactiveCocoa) [0]
  - Split up ViewControllers and DataSources [1]
  - Split up classes using Categories (I've seen so many blown up AppDelegates)
  - Use CocoaPods (this should be a given by now)
  - probably much more I forgot about...
oh, and btw: those `@directives` go by the name of `literals`

stigi··on Ask HN: Do you have any code currently in production that you're ashamed of?
