stichers··on Progressive gestures from big business aren’t just useless – they’re dangerous
I think individually, a number of the employees mean to do the right thing. I've worked for one of the big consultancies, and there were many, earnest and decent folks there. But collectively, for whatever reason, the choices the company made were awful.

If you were wondering why there's another post about CRDTs here on hacker news, so soon after this one (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28998767) I can answer that.

As I was finishing up the blog post above, I started speculating on whether HN was interested in the topic. And what kind of feedback it would get, if so.

My experiment with Nikita's list of CRDTs resources was instructive, to say the least, particularly as I'm something of a noob here.

So this time I've made sure that:

- the post works on mobile (well, as much as I can be sure) - I've spelled out the TLA (FLA?) in the title - the article is more than a list. It's much more.

I look forward to the discussion this time!

Ha ha! I'm not a dev any more, but old habits die hard, I guess. My comment was, in fact, to confirm for anyone who wanted to access with mobile Safari but who hadn't yet, that it indeed would work fine.

OP here — works for me on mobile Safari
stichers··on My experience of losing a friend to heroin (2020)
Thank you. I think I'm getting to that same insight by bashing my brain repeatedly around the same loop. It's good to hear it put more succinctly.

I'm going with this interpretation https://truthbook.com/stories/funny-god/the-drowning-man
stichers··on My experience of losing a friend to heroin (2020)
I lost a friend to meth and GHB at the beginning of this year, and although details are different, the trajectory is similar.

He suffered anxiety and was fearful about his life for years. Meth was what gave him fleeting confidence and euphoria, but also what finished that life. He was terrified to live, and he was terrified of death, so he self-medicated to manage, and ultimately that killed him.

As one of the people that cared about him who is left behind, I've struggled for answers, but I don't think there are any.

stichers··on Alice and Bob do event-driven architecture (Bake Off edition)
Disclaimer: I'm the author. This is the first time I've used Alice & Bob outside cryptography: they're together at last, rather than sending messages to each other, and I hope they're happy together in cake-filled bliss.

In all seriousness though: it's hard to come up with names for analogies. It's hard to come with analogies period.

What are the best examples you've seen? And what are the worst?

stichers··on Kedro: open-source library for production-ready machine learning code
Just because the challenge is relatively trivial to solve, doesn't make it any less important though. Experiment management, and the transition to production, is recognised as having potentially high impact to successful delivery. My understanding is that this takes care of details, which can otherwise get forgotten in the race for the best model. But YMMV.

If you're still wondering and/or interested in finding out, there's another thread with some discussion here https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20100492
stichers··on Kedro: open-source library for production-ready machine learning code
I personally don't think it's that black and white. Not everyone has the same training in best practices for software engineering, and this tool looks like it places some constraints on the anarchy that can result, without requiring huge amounts of front-loading.

It is built on top of Titan on Cassandra ut it's more than a graph database. We have a blog post in the works about that soon but take a look at https://grakn.ai/pages/platform/index.html for more.
