stevofolife··on Heuristics that almost always work
Reading through the comments shows that basic understanding of probability is crucial. If an outcome of an event is labeled with a probability of 1/10, what that really translates to is that if the event happens 10 times, you can expect the outcome to occur once.

The whole talk about N+1 gives the same probability as N is not right.

Well made! Can you share how you made the website?
stevofolife··on What the Omicron wave is revealing about human immunity
I have heard this argument so many times now. It’s so easy for someone to say stuff like this in hindsight.

But on day zero, no one knew what this “flu” really was and what it was capable of. What we knew at the time was the infection rate was accelerating globally.

You didn’t have any evidence to weight until now. The response that we took was right given limited information.

stevofolife··on Facebook loses users for the first time
Actually it’s not. Your early life social group becoming irrelevant to your life a decade later is NOT representative at all. What is accurate to say is the OP is not connecting with his old friends anymore. But let’s be real here, not everyone’s like that. Facebook is just a tool to connect with people. Attributing and expecting Facebook to make your friendships more relevant and meaningful is foolish and hopeless.
stevofolife··on What’s so hard about understanding consciousness?
Is a computer going to ask why am I operating on this specific CPU and not on the other CPU that is located in a server rack 2 meters away from it?

To be honest, I don’t get what you are really trying to understand or find out here.

stevofolife··on What’s so hard about understanding consciousness?
Replace the word “Consciousness” with “God” and it will equally make sense.
stevofolife··on What’s so hard about understanding consciousness?
We are unique as humans if you compare us to any biological being. Saying we are not is a very big understatement.
stevofolife··on Cruise is opening driverless cars to the public in San Francisco
Success? Go from point A to point B with minimal incidents. It's not that complicated as most people make out of it.

Great share! Your README is better than 99% of the repos I’ve seen in CV. And kudos for implementing it in both TF and PyTorch!

stevofolife··on Marketing is scary for a solo developer
You are the unicorn I've been looking for. Jokes aside, can I reach out to you regarding the intersection of coding and marketing?
stevofolife··on HashiCorp IPO today
How do one check this?
stevofolife··on Instagram Is Facebook Now
I agree. However, the type of growth you're addressing here is different from the growth in social media companies. The growth in ad-tech based companies are by nature very artificial when put in economic terms. One can easily argue that these companies provide value by enhancing the reach and personalization of your marketing activities which results in increased sales and brand exposure. But at the very end of the day, how is an ever increasing of consumer spending GDP going to solve real life and death issues? Growth becomes relevant because capitalism is very focused on generating profit, you can either increase revenue or reduce cost, which one is easier? Increase revenue which then leads to, "let's get more users".
stevofolife··on Instagram Is Facebook Now
Makes sense. Thanks for the heads up.
stevofolife··on Square is now called Block

stevofolife··on I resigned from Twitter
Then you should write a blog post, not a tweet.
stevofolife··on Instagram Is Facebook Now
All due to capitalism really. If you remove capitalism, growth really becomes irrelevant.

Edited: Downvoted without a comment, why?

stevofolife··on I resigned from Twitter
It also encourages you to be more concise, clear and mindful of what you want to say. The problem you outlined stems from the posters and not the platform.
stevofolife··on HashiCorp – S1
Why is marketing cost so high, relatively to the other parts of operating expense? What "exactly" are the marketing costs?
stevofolife··on Finishing my first game while working full-time
Generally true. The next step of optimization would be automating parts of your job so you can reduce 8 hours of work to like 6 hours of work. Now you have more time for yourself.
stevofolife··on Why the iBuying Algorithms Failed Zillow
Zillow will shut down its AI-enabled home buy/selling business and cut 25% of its workforce. The iBuying segment lost $422M in the most recent quarter.

Engine of their product is the Zestimate algorithm, a neural net model.

stevofolife··on Meta
And there's also little reason to think that anyone on Hacker News is more in-touch than Zuckerberg of 2021 with what the public wants and the tech trends. Someone who owns Facebook and Instagram can identify the trend easier than you. Unless you also happen to have a platform of more than billion of users, then please share your thoughts about trends.
stevofolife··on Building a recommendation engine inside Postgres with Python and Pandas (2020)
Pretty common and I think one of the main reasons why is that Pandas API has a very low entry barrier to get productive. It is very easy to do something without really knowing anything about computer science.

stevofolife··on The Science of the Benefits of Religion
Once you study Christianity, you will realize it actually offers you true freedom from the crap happening in the secular world.
stevofolife··on On YouTube’s recommendation system
That is true. But the word “next” makes all the difference in the world. If you know what I mean.
stevofolife··on On YouTube’s recommendation system
I think old school recommendations behave that way. You will need to introduce reinforcement learning into your reco in order to explore and exploit.
stevofolife··on On YouTube’s recommendation system
You started playing WoW Classic and it was able to recommend WoW-related videos. It did its job. What else do you expect from a recommendation system? Predict what you're interested next or what you're going to do tomorrow? That's not recommendation, that's mass surveillance and psychological manipulation.

But on a useful note, maybe YouTube needs to provide a function to see a list of random videos that are unexplored or new.
