stevev··on Seven years on, what do we know about the disappearance of flight MH370? (2021)
Interesting bits from the reading:

Communication devices lost contact.

The first turn can only be done by an experienced pilot.

No distress calls. Or passenger attempted cellular communication when they became within range.

Flight path matches similarly to Pilot’s in-home game simulator.

If an explosion occurred wiping out communication devices, it was only a matter of time before they crashed. The plane was on radar and tracked going south for several hours.

Due to the many turns, someone had to be in control of the plane in some capacity after the first turn.

It leaves me to two conclusions.

An alien parasite froze everyone. Made the pilot turn off communications. Made the pilot fly a flight pattern that closely resembles the one at home.

The pilot picked that specific flight as his last. Why he didn’t just nose dived immediately will be answered in the remaining hours he was on that flight. It would be inhumane to keep crew/passengers alive to witness their own demise. Thus I believe he was alive and alone heading south.

One does not need to be a professional to deduce possibilities and eliminate them. Given the facts, it can only lead to a few possibilities. Facts don’t care about your feelings.
stevev··on Four thousand weeks
I’m also in this dilemma. I feel that as time passes, slowly more and more things fall into my plate of ‘want to dos’.

How does one manage time with so many hobbies!

My attempt is to move the goal post back down, so as to not be overwhelmed.

Like learning Japanese for an example. Rather than me saying, I want to learn Japanese, I’ll set a goal for myself to, pick up the basics if hiragana and katakana.

I think this approach will help reinforce motivation for me to be short-term goal minded.

The reading did open my eyes to the thought that not everything on our list will be completed. You might be young, but at my I age have some things to eliminate from this list; or more specifically, move them down further in terms of priority. My reasoning is a personal one, at my age, things tend not to stick as well as when I was younger.

We’ll see.

stevev··on Why are there so many tech layoffs, and why should we be worried?
This was an opinion piece with no backing or supported evidence for it’s claims.

Excluding the consequences of being laid off, the author’s opinion is that the tech layoffs are strictly a copycat move. Since others are doing it, we might as well. One would expect an establishment as such to provide better evidence or support for its claim.

Historically layoffs occur due to unforeseeable labor market situations, reduced spending and economic constraints.

No one rolls the dice when it comes to potentially saving money and going under. Some economists are saying that we’re only at the beginning of a recession here in the US.

stevev··on Don't use Tailwind for a design system (2021)
Sounds more like it’s a react problem. I use vue.js and I don’t have these issues.
stevev··on 3M to end 'forever chemicals' output
Like lead was for humans in the last millennia, will PFAS be studied in our classrooms about a time where it was used for almost everything.
stevev··on Ask HN: Has anyone here turned around their life in their 40s?
Find therapy or just someone to talk to. The first and easiest place for free support can be a church. You can find love in the church as well to fulfill the wife and kids part; achieved by volunteering.

stevev··on How safe is ayahuasca? Large-scale study explores
I’ve had dreams where I carry on actual conversations with people in my own life and or strangers.

Realizing that I’m dreaming, I ask questions and to my surprise their answers and reactions are not of my doing. I ask in the manner of only listening immediately (clear minded with no thinking) so as to not influence their response. The brain is truly mysterious.

I wonder if hidden personas are created and stored and revealed in our dreams?

Or that our brain is connected to a plane that actually exists outside of our reality.

Maybe one day I’ll experience what you have.

Thanks for sharing.

stevev··on The changing fortunes of Japanese camera manufacturers
Great article concerning the state of JP Camera makers.

As an amateur photographer I feel this is just the natural order of things where companies succumb to the competition. Eventually leading to two or just three competing makers. Similar to Playstation, Xbox, and Switch.

My personal vision for a better camera is interoperability and an open source community.

Imagine if the major parts, pieces and software of the camera can be interchangeable rather than just the lenses.

Focus system of brand x, sensor of x, screen interface of x and view finder of x etc…

In this way, the components and technologies can be prioritized individually.

Open specifications can allow others the chance to invent.

Edit: another serious issue are the prices. This can be improved on greatly.

stevev··on Justice Department announces takedown of catalytic converter theft ring
They captured 22 individuals in the stings across the US. Probably only a few thousands more to go.
stevev··on Canon EOS R7 Disassembly and Teardown
Bad products is not a reason close specs. Unless you are heavily vested into Canon’s lense ecosystem, or have no issues with money, it makes no sense to go with them; if we’re considering full frames. Glass prices are overly marked up by the body creators and quality is subjective when there’s Sigma.
stevev··on Ask HN: Is Inflation Affecting You?
Yes. Work company doubling down, refusing to give higher raise ever since covid; unless it’s a new hire.
stevev··on Hyper-realistic digital humans in Unity
That’s great. Other studios are working on realistic problems and performance as well like Pearl Abyss. Difference is, they actually have games using the tech.
stevev··on Final Fantasy VI – Ted Woolsey Uncensored Edition
My favorite ff title. An epic story with deep rich dialogues and character depths. I think it’s great we get to see something like this!
stevev··on Cannabis use produces persistent cognitive impairments: meta review
As a user, I highly recommend that anyone under 21 not use cannabis. Their young brain is still developing.

It’s a drug like alcohol. Addiction can have consequences.

stevev··on Cannabis use produces persistent cognitive impairments: meta review
If only it was that simple.

Sober, I’d be coding and a notification would pop up on my phone, taking great attention away from the work. My child would be crying in the next room over and my brain would be formulating thoughts to discern what the fuss is all about.

My washer is leaking and now I have to set up an appointment for someone to come look at it and due to my busy schedule, I’d have to find time.

Distractions takes away the drive and motivations to code.

On Cannabis, the answers are there in my head and what to do.

Phone notification? Not important, ignore it.

Child crying? She has her mom.

Washer broke? Handle it after work.

Easily said but I think like many on here has stated, any stress reducing solution can make a difference.

Ymmv.

stevev··on Cannabis use produces persistent cognitive impairments: meta review
I also have the same belief when I code. To be specific, I realize what’s missing, and how it could be done better. You are probably righr, Stress.
stevev··on Cannabis use produces persistent cognitive impairments: meta review
I totally agree. I used to casually do it on a daily basis but would go on months sober. Coming back to it, the effects can be very overwhelming.

What concerns me are the vials that they now offer which contains highly concentrated thc oil contents.

I can tell you honestly that I was offered some and over did it one day and I was probably experiencing a psychotic episode.

My reality was distorted for half an hour. Like if I didn’t fold the towel a certain way, something bad could happen.

Getting too high has turned me away from using cannabis as it’s no longer enjoyable.

stevev··on Cannabis use produces persistent cognitive impairments: meta review
Under the influence, I realize that I am truly indeed, a creature of habits. I do many things without thinking about them. Learned behavior that are consistent and doesn’t really change.

Cannabis use somehow helps me focus on things I wouldn’t normally do; it’s like having a burst of energy and the mental capacity to do almost anything I put my mind to. Things that seem hard, complicated or long, seems simplified, doable and ordered. I’m a programmer btw.

There is the high, which I don’t really enjoy. I prefer the energy and focus over the high. I’ve been recommended CBD before as well.

I could be completely oblivious to its permanent affects. However I only use on occasion and go months sober.

I want to believe that there may be certain chemicals in Cannabis that can help the human brain be more productive and efficient, however I know nothing about the science.

stevev··on 2021 Tesla Model Y review: Nearly great, critically flawed
This makes me weary about considering the Tesla Cybertruck. Besides the author, the amount of topics or personal stories about the quality of Tesla vehicles looks alarming.
stevev··on Ruby vs. Python comes down to the for loop
In the end it is about preferences. It’s going to be biased given the subject at hand. I do prefer ruby. It’s more object oriented. The language really focuses on this. Example, the plus sign symbol (+) can have Methods or even be a class or be anything. That’s Ruby.
stevev··on Ruby vs. Python comes down to the for loop
Developer happiness, I believe, was one of the main pinnacles and design choice of Ruby according to Matz. Meaning he wanted developers to enjoy coding in Ruby.
stevev··on The wealthiest 10% of Americans own a record 89% of all U.S. stocks
Were they wealthy before owning that much or became wealthy as a result of owning it?
stevev··on Why nobody hires junior developers and what happens next
If you are a new dev, here are a few things to consider:

Many companies hire most during the first and last quarters of the year (Feb-Apr), (Sept-Nov).

Last quarter: New budget for next year allows us to increase devs. Early training opportunity during the slow season.

First Quarter: Things are picking up, we need more devs for the new projects.

Trying to get jobs outside of those periods may be challenging. You’ll likely face a competitive hiring process to fill vacant positions.

The easiest way to get your foot in the door in this industry is either you know someone personally that can refer you to an open position, or seek tech recruiters. (I’m not including individuals that graduates at top colleges as they should have no issues getting jobs).

Tech recruiters does have a bad vibe in our industry due to many reasons, but due to the challenges of securing that first tech job as a brand new dev, the opportunity is a fair trade.

Tech recruiting firms work closely with actual hiring managers. They know what managers are looking for. The hiring process can be fast.

Fulltime positions with benefits: Expect harder interview and bias skill aptitude from hiring manager.

Contract to hire: Easier interview. Higher initial hourly pay due to no benefits.

Things I didn’t include but are equally important, have finished personal github projects, good resume detailing your projects tech, purpose and value.

Brush up on algorithms, OOP and designs. Data structures. Work on acing the interview process.

If you live in an area/city that does not have the available framework/tech that you are interested in, move or suck it up and learn it. (Things are better now, in the US that is)

Be sure to ask what’s the salary range of the position(s). Don’t sell yourself short. And be firm on a potential salary transition. Negotiations can always happen after the 5-6 months contract. Be reasonable.

stevev··on Bitcoin: Who owns it, who mines it, who’s breaking the law
The so called whales in the article are crypto exchanges holding btc, and not actual individual holders. The only person to hold more than a mill is Satoshi.
stevev··on Bitcoin is a Ponzi
That’s incorrect. One btc = One btc. Its value relative to fiat or usd is irrelevant. No one takes your btc away from you to give to another when you have custody of it.
stevev··on Atlassian fired me while I was taking care of my wife who is fighting cancer
I think the biggest and most important ingredient to have in his situation is his relationship with his boss or manager.

It would be best if these things are handled at the HR level. It is a cultural thing or issue in some companies.

If your boss supports you, you’ll be fine, else better start looking for a new job.

Interesting. What other car makers has self driving capabilities, runs on ev exceeding 250 mi on range, and has cameras around the car? Last I checked Volvos doesn’t even come close.
