stevenalowe··on Cancer is surging, bringing a debate about whether to look for it
“Dr. Welch said the number of unnecessary diagnoses could be lessened if doctors did less routine testing — and if doctors held back from pursuing every abnormality in asymptomatic patients.”

I pity this doctor’s patients

stevenalowe··on Washington state Medicare users could soon have claims denied by AI
If you think about it, the purpose of any insurance claims systems must be to find reasons to deny your claim, otherwise it is by default approved. Thus I expect AI hallucinating “rules” will generate some interesting class-action lawsuits. I just hope nobody dies from it.
stevenalowe··on Greeting Vocalizations in Domestic Cats Are More Frequent with Male Caregivers
Is it because men don’t listen?
stevenalowe··on YouTube caught making AI-edits to videos and adding misleading AI summaries
Every YT short looks AI-ified and creepy now
stevenalowe··on The Math Legend Who Just Left Academia–For an AI Startup Run by a 24-Year-Old
The commercial problem with Thinking Machines was that they had to ship a programmer with every one sold because almost no one knew how to program a SIMD machine in Occam
stevenalowe··on Macron warned US could 'betray' Ukraine in leaked leaders' call
The US has already betrayed Ukraine multiple times. It is appalling to watch my country’s ideals and integrity be shredded by a gold painted toddler with dictator envy
stevenalowe··on Meta's Child Sex-Trafficking Problem
‘Accounts You May Follow “recommended 1.4 million potential IIC violators to teenage users in a single day” (p. 53).’
stevenalowe··on Ask HN: Glasses with lights that flash whenever they detect cigarette smoke?
Sounds like virtue signaling
stevenalowe··on Taking Thiel Seriously on the Antichrist
Sorry, not buying the “security state” == “antichrist” angle, and if I did I don’t think PT would oppose it - looks like he’s trying to build it
stevenalowe··on Drunk raccoon found passed out in Virginia liquor store
“Fell through the ceiling…”
stevenalowe··on Utah's proposed homeless camp claims to be 'most compassionate policy anywhere'
“By banning outdoor camps and pouring resources into one campus, critics framed the state’s efforts as using coercion to move marginalized individuals to some place where they are less visible, and unable to leave of their own free will”

Sure, they want to round up people off the street and concentrate them in prison-like camps, but no idea where the Nazi comparison came from

stevenalowe··on TSA's New $45 Fee at U.S. Airports Unfairly Punishes Families in the Fine Print
In many states a RealID costs $40 and is good for 5 years; if the info/vetting process is the same then the $45 fee should come with an ID good for five years or more

The TSA is not a joke, it’s a sleeper cell. Wait for the ICE-TSA collusion a bit longer and a $45 fee won’t save you from being the wrong color

stevenalowe··on Kohler Can Access Data from Toilet Camera It Describes as "End-to-End Encrypted"
I hope there’s no back door
stevenalowe··on Google will start building data centers in space, powered by the sun, in 2027
That would be really dumb
stevenalowe··on Ask HN: Why don't buildings have dry warm up rooms for your laptop in winter?
First World Problem
stevenalowe··on Apple refuses Indias order to preload state cyber safety app Sanchar Saathi
Yay! I hope this sticks
stevenalowe··on India orders Apple to pre-install an undeletable state security app on iPhones
Absolutely correct - actions over words
stevenalowe··on Thousands of U.S. trucking schools could lose accreditation under DOT crackdown
Once again, it’s all about immigrants

No lie is too absurd for this administration; there is no level of bigotry they will not embrace

The only thing missing in this story is the grift; wait for it

stevenalowe··on Lawmakers Suggest Follow-Up Boat Strike Could Be a War Crime
Both strikes were war crimes. The USA is not at war with Venezuela, the boat was in international waters, the boat was not a threat.

Disgusted that this has to be mentioned repeatedly

stevenalowe··on When you give a manager a chatbot
If you give a manager a chatbot, they’ll want a sandbox. If you give them a sandbox, they’ll want to push to production. If you give them a path to production, your on-call shift will never end…
stevenalowe··on ICE Wants to Go After Dissenters as Well as Immigrants
Well that didn’t take long
stevenalowe··on India orders Apple to pre-install an undeletable state security app on iPhones
“Withdrawing from that market (India) in order to uphold its values (user privacy) is not a practical option”

At which point Apple can no longer claim said values

Curious what, if any, will be the public reaction to this blatant and secret mass surveillance attempt

stevenalowe··on Ask HN: A restaurant that shows a video of your burger's cow in happier times?
Sounds like a great way to go bankrupt
stevenalowe··on Walmart exec: 'I've never believed in the term work-life balance'
“When Morris is visiting family, for example, her main focus is on them. But if there’s something at work that needs her attention, she won’t wait until she’s back in the office to do so”

So, not really focused on family then

Puff piece

stevenalowe··on Will Ireland's new alcohol warning labels turn people away from drinking?
That can’t be a serious question
stevenalowe··on I wrote 40 papers about AI generating synthetic truth. I used AI to write them [pdf]
That depends on whether the self-reference creates a Logical fallacy like argument by definition and/or circular argument
stevenalowe··on The Great Consciousness Theory a Single-Axiom Model of Reality
This is an excellent example of the kind of sci-fi nonsense that LLMs encourage. Many fantastic claims but no evidence or testable predictions.
stevenalowe··on The AI Hallucination Debate Is Missing the Point
5. off-by-one errors
stevenalowe··on Be Like Clippy
is this an example of retro-cultural misappropriation?
stevenalowe··on Why the Dutch embrace floating homes
