stevenalowe··on Ask HN: Is anyone growing further from capitalism?
Economics is not zero-sum so the ratio is irrelevant
stevenalowe··on Ask HN: Is anyone growing further from capitalism?
No. Musk’s money affects me no more than yours or anyone else’s. Creating something that people want is giving back to society, in a mutually-beneficial way.
stevenalowe··on Update on Anthropic Situation
“The Admin” this and “The Admin” that. The Admin giveth, The Admin taketh away. Orwell in King James English?
stevenalowe··on Bernie Sanders' AI Sovereign Wealth Fund Plan
"This is not an effective way to influence corporations to act in the public interest. In fact, it makes corporate influence on the government more likely."

Bingo. The US government should not own stocks, and AFAIK has no authority to demand or buy stocks. A Sovereign Fund can be built via taxes, which the US government is actually authorized to do.

stevenalowe··on American Ebola Unit Sparks Fury, Protests and a Political Crisis in Kenya
"Hundreds of Kenyans have marched through the streets to oppose a quarantine facility that would be reserved exclusively for American patients."

"The police have used tear gas to disperse crowds, and at least three protesters have been shot and killed"

"Others have asked why Kenya, which has never recorded an Ebola case, would agree to host the unit when U.S. government officials say Kenyans would be excluded from receiving treatment there."

stevenalowe··on Moscow Hints at Potential US-Russia Tunnel Deal
“There were already talks about the US and Rusisa splitting up the Donbas resources as part of a deal”

The USA is not, nor should it be, an Imperialist conquerer, nor should we collaborate with one.

“Bold moves” my ass

stevenalowe··on Moscow Hints at Potential US-Russia Tunnel Deal
Cargo yes, that would make sense - in peacetime with rational allies

We have and are none of these at present

stevenalowe··on Moscow Hints at Potential US-Russia Tunnel Deal

Cannot read paywalled article but lede photo is the lead author of the critical article

If they were peacefully handing out copies of an article, the conference runners should get their free-speech suppressing asses sued off

stevenalowe··on Entanglement Builds Space-Time. Now "Magic" Gives It Gravity
Thanks for this - holography as a theory strikes me as an absurd math trick - if a 3d world is really just a 2d surface, would it not logically follow that said 2d surface is itself merely a projection from 1d, and perhaps that is a projection from 0d?

Obviously I don’t understand this, and probably won’t but what limits the dimension reduction?

Going the other way, would our 3d space not be the “surface” of a deeper 4d space, and that of a 5d space, etc?

stevenalowe··on Entanglement Builds Space-Time. Now "Magic" Gives It Gravity
Well, I read it, but none of it made any sense, so ok gravity is “magic”
stevenalowe··on SETI Panel Revises Recommendations for Dealing with 'Disclosure Day'
“These new protocols ensure that scientists maintain the highest standards of evidence before making announcements to the world.”
stevenalowe··on The Public Should Own Half of the Big A.I. Companies
That would be great but apparently it doesn’t work like that here (except Alaska)
stevenalowe··on She won a religious exemption from using AI at work
It’s kinda worse than that - an Orthodox Jew would, by long-standing traditions and teachings, not be expected to touch pork. The same beliefs that make this person object to using AI could easily apply to any cloud-scale service dependent on data centers.

Like say… Google search (the old non-AI one)
