stevejohnson··on Speak.js Demo
Doesn't work with Flashblock enabled, which seems odd to me.
stevejohnson··on Make Something People Love: Lessons From a Startup Guy
Warning: when you check out, the web site emails you your password in plain text and it's difficult to change it.

Here's the reset link that I hunted down from their Twitter response to someone with similar concerns: http://www.hyperink.com/reset

stevejohnson··on Apple Releases Dedicated iOS Podcasts App
Relevant to the "Apple changes App Store search" story from the last couple of days: I am so far completely unable to find this app by searching for "podcasts", or even "podcasts apple".

A quick Google search, on the other hand, worked instantly.

stevejohnson··on Things Not Strings -- Google Launches Knowledge Graph
This reminds me of zero-click info from Duck Duck Go, but deeper. They're showing a summary-like view of information related to your search, but instead of being generated by a bunch of hand-curated rules, they come from more generalized machine learning algorithms. This is real competition for one of my favorite DDG features.

I see this as a positive example of search innovation and competition. More globally relevant information, not just a tighter filter bubble.

stevejohnson··on Linux Creator Linus Torvalds Declined to Join Apple
To whoever downvoted: I actually have read "Just For Fun" in its entirety, and that comment was in fact my honest assessment of what I read in that text. If you want me to come back in a couple of hours with a citation, fine.

Jobs tried to recruit Linus after NeXTSTEP was already an established OS.

stevejohnson··on Linux Creator Linus Torvalds Declined to Join Apple
That's not how I read it. Jobs never had the BSD or Linux kernels in mind, he just wanted Linus to somehow "get all the open source people to like Apple" and stop maintaining a separate ecosystem.
stevejohnson··on [dead]
You're right, I completely misread the grandparent.
stevejohnson··on [dead]
Would the downvoters kindly explain themselves? I intended to pose an honest question about how they're doing autocomplete. Apparently I'm the only one who hasn't seen that particular behavior on a search engine before. I don't recall that specific set of suggestions show up in any other search box I've used, probably because I don't pay attention.

Edit: I see now that I misinterpreted the parent. I thought he meant those just happened to be the top Lycos search terms, but he meant that the name of the form element was shared with other sites that have search fields I use.

stevejohnson··on [dead]
No, it was creepily relevant for me too. It seems to know what I've been typing into Github over the past 24 hours.
stevejohnson··on The Future of JavaScript
My guess would be bikeshedding.

I just submitted the actual schedule instead of this useless blogspam.

stevejohnson··on Apple's 1987 Knowledge Navigator, Only One Month Late
Ah yes, of course. Sculley came to consider himself a visionary and artist, sponsoring a couple of projects like these.

I'm not going to attribute the near-attainment of this lofty vision to the guy he fired, but I'm glad it has been brought this far.

stevejohnson··on Apple's 1987 Knowledge Navigator, Only One Month Late
Ironically, this video was made at the request of one of the CEOs who was booted during Apple's dark period. (Gil Amelio? Edit: See child, it was John Sculley.)

Source: Insanely Great. I don't have a copy to look it up in.

stevejohnson··on Overview of Text Editors for Programming on the Mac
It's hardly reasonable to recommend changing OSes just to use a different text editor.
stevejohnson··on Schemutt: An XML Schema Assistant
I made this to help me figure out some poorly documented APIs I had to work with. I have no idea if it's useful to anyone else, but it seemed interesting, so here it is!
stevejohnson··on A resume template in TeX
I've often thought of doing the same. Are there any special flags you pass to wkhtmltopdf or is it pretty straightforward?
stevejohnson··on Cocoapods: An Objective-C library package manager
"It" being the package repository.
stevejohnson··on Cocoapods: An Objective-C library package manager
Without better documentation I can't really evaluate this. Who runs the central repository? How is it kept up to date?

I feel my skepticism is warranted for a week-old project.

stevejohnson··on Font Smoothing Detection in Browsers
I think it's a mistake to classify all subpixel-level renderers as ClearType. There are different styles of subpixel rendering, some of which look better than others with large @font-face fonts.

The system described puts Windows 7 and iOS in the same category, which is a really bad idea IMO.

stevejohnson··on TimeHub. Create invoices from Github commits
This is awesome, and came at just the right time for me!

Last February, in my last semester of college, I heard about an iPad contracting job. I had never done any freelance work before, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to see what it was like. I gave the client a whole-project quote based on some conservative time estimates and an hourly rate a little below the market.

After that I didn't really track hours since they were paying per feature milestone, so when the project was over I had no idea how much time I had actually spent on it. I had planned to write a utility to estimate the time from my Git commits. You beat me to it! (Turns out I'm faster than I thought. :-))

I just finished writing my own time tracking tool, but I may use this instead for projects that can be represented entirely by their git repository.

Some comments:

- I have a lot of repositories, most of them small personal projects or other people's open source projects. Can you let me only import a couple, maybe preferring private and recent repositories?

- The design is very nice

- Can you separate the time estimation from the cost calculation? I'm sure a lot of people are interested in that functionality by itself.

- If I'm going to back-fill estimates, I want to see the diff, but the links to the commit diffs are on the page before you can enter the estimates. Add links to the page where you can enter your own estimates!

stevejohnson··on ZStack: Heroku for mobile
At first I thought they were in deep trouble with this hitting the front page mere hours after the iCloud announcement. Then I looked at what the actually offer, and it looks like they will be able to compete. They have social, notifications, cross-platform-ness, and analytics in addition to just storage sync. Good luck, I may become a user!
stevejohnson··on Let's just use Emacs

    * Being needlessly argumentative
    * Borderline trolling. You _know_ how these arguments go.
    * Fallaciously arguing that tools cannot be compared based on how well they get the job done
(IDEs vs 'editors') rather than their implementation
    * Getting pissy about downvotes and posting multiple times instead of editing
You've been here a year. You should know better.
stevejohnson··on How Memory Management Works on iOS
This article gives bad advice. If you use his examples your program will crash; see tylerc230's comment. Also, it does not follow generally accepted style practices, such as the lack of a space after a closing bracket [[like]this].
stevejohnson··on GroupTalent - Hire Effective Teams. Not Individuals.
I love the idea, but as usual, I have gripes:

* The team URL is bland. We are grouptalent.com/teams/61, but can't we be grouptalent.com/teams/hackthology instead?

* It wasn't clear what the "submit for approval" button was for, so one of my team members pressed it before he should have while we were entering data.

* Entering education is a bit cumbersome. My team is made of EE and CS students from CWRU in the BS, MS, and PhD programs, so our education section looks pretty weird.

stevejohnson··on Objective-C's niche: why it survives in a world of alternatives
MacRuby has disproven that assertion pretty well. It benchmarks remarkably close to Obj-C.
stevejohnson··on [dead]
What a relief! Maybe now this celebrity gossip will get off the front page.
stevejohnson··on Pythex: a Python regular expression editor
Why not keep it on App Engine permanently so you don't have to worry about it going down again?
stevejohnson··on Pythex: a Python regular expression editor
It's also Windows only and not specifically for Python, whose regex library has unique features and quirks..
stevejohnson··on QuickSilver for Mac Lives
From what I understand, the last official update was several years ago, so this really is news.
