steveh73··on Uber’s New Rival in Australia: An Indian Upstart
I would hazard a guess you could make 99.5% of transactions with EFTPOS in NZ - the exceptions might be a few vendors at farmers markets (most take EFTPOS), sausage sizzles/ad-hoc fundraisers, fruit honesty boxes on the side of the road, etc. Maybe only 85% would take credit/debit, though.

From my experience in sydney/melbourne more places take credit/debit than NZ but also more places are cash only. Not as much penetration for EFTPOS.

steveh73··on Terraforming 1Password
You can move state around with `terraform state mv`. It's a bit tricky and has some gotchas but works (which applies to terraform as a whole really)
steveh73··on AMD's Future in Servers: New 7000-Series CPUs Launched and EPYC Analysis
I have a skylake xeon from january 2016, and I think they had been around for a few months then?
steveh73··on Ask HN: Please AWS team, make links work with control-click
I believe it's that javascript apps built without due care and consideration don't use true links, they use onclick handlers.
steveh73··on New Zealand Will Give You a Free Trip If You Agree to a Job Interview
Unmetered gigabit internet is widely available over both fibre and cable. It's not particularly cheap (equiv of $80 USD+tax) but it's there.
steveh73··on Almost everyone is doing the API economy wrong
Bane, not vain
steveh73··on ZFS on RaspberryPi B
Like the other reply says, not necessary unless you use deduplication. Mine has 60TB/16GB with no issues; I reckon it would be fine with half that.
steveh73··on Why Homejoy Failed
Works for taxis too. An acquaintance of mine has regularly (once or twice a week) had to travel from his home to the airport, about a $100 fare each way. He's used the same taxi driver for about 10 years - knowing that either this driver (or someone the driver vouches for) will be on time every time.

(taxi expenses are covered by his work but personal car travel is not, so he doesn't drive, go figure)

steveh73··on Show HN: Universal Pause Button
No, it worked - you were just paused along with it. (It times out automatically if there is no user input.)
steveh73··on Increasing head-parking interval from default on Western Digital drives (2014)
They are cheaper, obviously
steveh73··on Google Search Appliance
IIRC it was $50,000 USD for 2 years per appliance; that might have been per 2 appliances.
steveh73··on My experience with using cp to copy 432 million files (39 TB)
"Normally I'd have copied/moved the files at block-level (eg. using dd or pvmove), but suspecting bad blocks, I went for a file-level copy because then I'd know which files contained the bad blocks."
steveh73··on Coding tip: Leave your code in a broken state
I believe this tip originated from writers. By leaving your thoughts incomplete, but with an end in mind, you can begin writing the next day and get into the flow immediately.
steveh73··on Spy access to NZ used as bargaining tool
I get 10-12mbit pretty consistently on unmetered ADSL2, and did at the last two places I lived as well. The couple of people I know with VDSL get 30-40mbit. A couple of others with UFB get the full 100mbit. Perhaps you're just really unlucky. This is all across auckland with telecom, vodafone, slingslot, orcon.
steveh73··on Bose founder, Amar Bose, has died at 83
Bose aviation headsets are amazing.
steveh73··on Introducing Project Loon: Balloon-powered Internet access
It's a small, english-speaking country, relatively isolated in space and time from the primary markets.
steveh73··on US spy device 'tested on NZ public'
Herald on Sunday is a different newspaper. Herald > Stuff > Herald on Sunday in terms of trashiness.
steveh73··on Dropbox Chooser
Can't you do this already? Maybe you just need to update your dropbox client.
steveh73··on Java flaw allows “complete” bypass of security sandbox
Don't they take several days? Does the US seriously not having something equivalent to direct credit?
steveh73··on The ban on electronic devices rests on anecdotes
Mobile phones absolutely do interfere with aeroplane systems. You know how your radio goes dit dit-dit dit when you change cell towers or receive a message? Happens with aircraft radios too. Extremely annoying when your passenger ignores your request to turn off their phone. VOR, ADF, NDB and ILS also all use radio waves and could therefore also be subject to interference.
steveh73··on PC obsolescence is obsolete
I would say you're right for most cases. But not for gamers or "power users":

* Game developers constantly up the ante. Try playing Battlefield 3 at 2560x1440 on Ultra on your 2008 PC and see how you go, if it even starts at all.

* Virtualisation has resulted in consolidation (for me at least). Whereas I might have had to keep around a Windows box to do testing, now I just fire up a VM on my laptop.

steveh73··on Amazon Glacier
That seems really odd. You might consider opening a debit card at a better bank? My bank charges 2.5% with a minimum charge of 1 cent.
steveh73··on OAuth and API Providers: Come on guys.
Which version of OAuth 2? It's not standardized, new drafts are issued regularly, many of them backwards-incompatible.
steveh73··on OAuth and API Providers: Come on guys.
Which version? There were 30 mutually incompatible draft versions of OAuth2 last time I checked
steveh73··on Fullscreen in Mountain Lion still renders second display useless
Browse around iTunes until you find a track that doesn't quite fit horizontally. Click the "zoom" button, to make the window big enough. Oh wait, it doesn't.

If by "developers" you mean "Apple" then yes. I never use the "zoom" button because it exhibits apparently random behaviour.

steveh73··on Kim Dotcom Will Go to the US in Exchange for Legal Funds
The NZ government froze $11m in NZ bank accounts. The US can't touch that without the NZ Govt sending it abroad, as far as I know.
steveh73··on Mega-victory: Kim Dotcom search warrants “invalid,” mansion raid “illegal”
Yes, NZ govt. Some of it has been returned to cover living expenses. Although I understand he also had/has some money in Hong Kong.
steveh73··on Pin is Australia’s first all-in-one payment API
Amazon and Google Checkout don't work globally (for sellers)
steveh73··on Pin is Australia’s first all-in-one payment API
I'm not sure on the backend, but they don't seem to on the frontend - CBA and ASB's web interfaces are very very different, at least.
steveh73··on Pin is Australia’s first all-in-one payment API
Great! Do you plan an having a hosted payment page ala DPS or PayPal though? I'd much prefer never seeing my customers credit card number at all.

Also please let me know if you're planning on adding support for NZ too, the situation for accepting payments here is just as dire.
