steve-benjamins··on Show HN: Screen.rip – API for capturing web screenshots
What does auto-updating mean?

I run a website builders review website and have always wanted to write a script that captures every pricing page so that my readers could scan them all at once.

Two problems have kept me from this:

1) Scrolling (which it looks like you've fixed— haven't seen other screenshot APIs do this— awesome!) 2) Pricing pages change often— so manual screenshots don't make sense. Does your auto-updating take care of this? (ie: captures a new screenshot each time the page is updated)

That's amazing— thanks!
steve-benjamins··on Spotify’s Discover Weekly: How machine learning finds new music
Hi! :)
steve-benjamins··on Spotify’s Discover Weekly: How machine learning finds new music
Hah— no way! That's amazing... made my morning :)
steve-benjamins··on Spotify’s Discover Weekly: How machine learning finds new music
As an artist, Discover Weekly has been the best thing to ever happen to me. Every Monday I get a big infusion of listeners (around 5,000)— many of who stick around and check out my other music :)

Prior to that, the best press I could get was the tedious process of cold-emailing bloggers (a practice which is now dying off).

steve-benjamins··on Show HN: Simple Tool to Preview Album Art on Spotify, Apple Music and Pandora
Non-musicians might not know this: You can't edit album artwork once it is on Apple Music or Spotify. As a consequence, I often regret my choice of font size or the borders I chose once the artwork is live on streaming services.

This is simple, little tool I made to preview album art on desktop vs mobile and on different streaming services.

steve-benjamins··on You Don’t Have to Risk Everything to Start Your Business
Oh my god. Take my story for what it is: one guys story. It's purpose is to share a way forward for people who want to start their own business but don't want to bet the farm. That's it. It couldn't be any clearer. Stop putting further narratives on it. I'm not attacking whatever you think I'm attacking.
steve-benjamins··on You Don’t Have to Risk Everything to Start Your Business
Did you read the article or just shoehorn it into some trend?

> We tell stories about entrepreneurs who take big risks because risk is sexy. People who take risks, the implication goes, are fearless. It makes for a great story... So here’s an alternative: play the slow-game.

steve-benjamins··on You Don’t Have to Risk Everything to Start Your Business
Really appreciate your comment— that's certainly my goal :)
steve-benjamins··on You Don’t Have to Risk Everything to Start Your Business
That's pedantic.

"You'd Don't Have to Risk Everything" implies an option, not broad applicability.

steve-benjamins··on You Don’t Have to Risk Everything to Start Your Business
It's accurate. My other websites have not been as successful, they make $50 - $200 / month :(
steve-benjamins··on You Don’t Have to Risk Everything to Start Your Business
I'm the author. I was definitely lucky to work for an organization that was flexible.

Take my story for what it is though: a particular story. Particulars aren't meant to be broadly applicable.

steve-benjamins··on You Don’t Have to Risk Everything to Start Your Business
tl/dr: Author shares how he moved from full-time employee to part-time employee as a way to mitigate the risk of starting a business.
steve-benjamins··on The Boring Company FAQ
As an aside, I love that The Boring Company is a Squarespace website :D
steve-benjamins··on President Trump Fires FBI Director James Comey
This isn't great news. A Trump appointed FBI director will not be an improvement over Comey.
steve-benjamins··on Norway: 37% of new vehicles sold in January were electric
I doubt that. Growth may slow but I have a hard time believing the market share would contract (that's a dramatic shift!).

Edit: Removed paragraph about market share.

steve-benjamins··on Show HN: I talked to 917 ecommerce software users. Here's what I found.
Fair enough.

Though I think websites like Site Builder Report and The Wirecutter can retain their integrity. I get emails every week from people who've found Site Builder Report helpful (https://www.sitebuilderreport.com/p/testimonials).

It wouldn't look great to have affiliate links only for highly-rated products— that would signal to readers that I only give good reviews to products with an affiliate program. (Which is certainly not true— websitebuilder.com pays twice as much as any affiliate program and I'm very critical of them: https://www.sitebuilderreport.com/website-builders/review/we...)

steve-benjamins··on Show HN: I talked to 917 ecommerce software users. Here's what I found.
Did you look closeley at SiteBuilderReport.com? It's exactly what you've described- I take an in-depth look at every website builder...
steve-benjamins··on Once mocked, Facebook’s $1B acquisition of Instagram was a good move
You sound incredulous that Instagram took off while also admitting you don't understand it's appeal... That doesn't seem like someone open to understanding the appeal :)
steve-benjamins··on SubmitHub: how a solo founder built a $46k/mo SaaS business in 10 months
I used SubmitHub to share my music and it's a great experience. It fixes an exhausting cold-outreach process. (I used it to get some pretty major coverage— for me, at least— when a well-known blog sent 25,000 listens after covering my song).
steve-benjamins··on Why Finnish babies sleep in cardboard boxes (2013)
Which might be sensible. As OP has suggested, the state may be better than the market at this.
steve-benjamins··on Airbnb gets into the property management business
Most hotels do not own their own real estate.
steve-benjamins··on Emailing SaaS companies to test support time
No reason in particular. Just chose 52 companies relatively randomly (just wanted them to be from the 5 industries I listed).
steve-benjamins··on Emailing SaaS companies to test support time
Author here— totally agree. Just added a note about this in the conclusion as I think it's worth pointing out.

There's definitely a limit to what kind of conclusions you can draw from my data. Mostly I just thought it was interesting and worth sharing.

steve-benjamins··on 85 percent of Facebook video is watched without sound
It really is bad. I can't upload my band's music videos to Facebook video because the compression is so distorting...
steve-benjamins··on Is a prenup a good idea?
Nah. It's entirely possible that Susan's intentions are benevolent here.

Being able to trust that both of you are committed is critical to making a marriage work. While it's possible to trust each other's commitment and have a prenup, in practice it's not that simple. Relationship's have a delicate equilibrium of trust that needs to be maintained— a prenup does make this more complex. I'm not saying it's impossible, I just think being hesitant about a prenup is entirely sensible position.

steve-benjamins··on Amazon Reviews: How We Spot the Fakes
This is what I try do. I review website builders at sitebuilderreport.com— but I actually in-depth reviews (for example: I pay for each website builder with my own credit card to test their cancellation policies).

The hard part (I think) can be establishing that trust— getting the reader to understand that hey, I'm a real guy, who's really spent a lot of time looking at website builders.

steve-benjamins··on Show HN: In-Depth Guide to Choosing a Website Builder
Thanks! I designed and coded it myself in Rails (things such as the comparison table require databases). But I use Squarespace in other projects (for example, my band's website).
steve-benjamins··on Show HN: In-Depth Guide to Choosing a Website Builder
Thanks! To be honest no major techniques except basic technical SEO and making content that people naturally link to such as Stock Up (www.sitebuilderreport.com/stock-up)

I agree regarding price. I added the pricing because readers were asking me for it— but I don't think it's done well yet. I have to figure out how to do it right.
