stesch··on Apple Watch Series 5
BTW: There's more than one Frankfurt in Germany.
stesch··on Apple Watch Series 5
I charge my Series 0 Apple Watch once a day when it's at about 50%.
stesch··on Who Cares About Literary Prizes?
The title of the post: Who Cares About Literary Prizes?
stesch··on Who Cares About Literary Prizes?
I probably haven't read anything that won a "normal" prize. At least not in the decades after school.

I've read a few old books who won Science Fiction prizes like the Hugo Award. But today even these are a bit too political.

stesch··on India to Attempt Moon Landing at the Lunar South Pole Today
They still get a lot of development aid from foreign countries. Germany approved new €765.02 million in 2018.

That's hard to explain.

stesch··on What happens when you launch Google Chrome for the first time?
I'm programming since the 1980s. This feels very, very strange to me. I wouldn't want to rely on so many moving parts even after the whole software got installed.

They have a totally different philosophy than us old folks.

stesch··on A Beginner’s Introduction to Python Web Frameworks (2018)
Weppy is considered a known older one. That's a sign that I'm getting old.
stesch··on Roblox hits 100M monthly active users, bigger than Minecraft
Last time I wanted to give it a try they wanted to install on the small system drive. :-(
stesch··on The OpenBSD Ada Library
There are so many standardized languages out there that have many implementations. Some commercial and some free.

Are there other free Ada compilers out there or is the language too complex for simple enthusiasts to implement a compiler themselves?

Ada isn't owned by one company.

stesch··on The Pirate Party on Copyright Reform (2010)
Our political systems in the free world are very resistant to change. A party can be founded to further an important topic but people demand that they have a broader program and address all kinds of topics.

And then you end up with another copy of some party.

stesch··on Americans' plastic recycling is dumped in landfills
Americans have landfills and Germans recycle and burn the plastic.

Where is all the plastic in the oceans coming from???

stesch··on What's Coming in Python 3.8
No new way to format a string?
stesch··on Libra, 2 Weeks In
Wondering how normal Germans would react to Libra. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJ26TbhZW8k (How to deal with money like a German | Meet the Germans)
stesch··on Non-English-based programming languages
No way. I hate localized error messages. At least in modern times as software vendors stopped putting error numbers into the message.

It's very hard to find solutions online when you only get a localized error message.

stesch··on Vue RFC: Expose logic-related component options via function-based APIs instead
Isn't this half the fun of using JavaScript frameworks?
stesch··on RFC-1149: IP over Avian Carriers
From the good old times, when IT people were allowed to laugh.
stesch··on How Fragmented Is Android?
By the way: iPhone 4 supports iOS 7.1.2, released 4 years after the iPhone 4.
stesch··on How Fragmented Is Android?
I'm wondering if letting your app support very old OS versions is a good thing. You get more customers but aren't the ones with the old OS more likely be the ones causing the most problems (= work) because they aren't very tech savvy?
stesch··on Why Does Windows Really Use Backslash as Path Separator?

stesch··on Why Does Windows Really Use Backslash as Path Separator?
Remember that one time Linus (Linus Tech Tips) criticized the Apple Mac because it uses slashes as path separator?
stesch··on Playdate – A New Handheld Gaming System
They make really good PR. Twitter was exploding yesterday. The topic "Software Development" on the original Twitter client only had tweets about this gaming system. (And not a single half naked cosplayer programmer.)
stesch··on Netflix is not the future of TV
Most Netflix productions aren't really for me. After many disappointments I now see Netflix originals as something to avoid.
stesch··on New Game: Minecraft Earth
Reminds me of "Rainbows End". Remember the scene when the kids go to school and overlay the building on the way? (And all the other overlays/skins.)
stesch··on Racket 7.3
Making the font bold is what makes it look so bad in Firefox. In combination with the font.
stesch··on Racket 7.3
Font looks like shit in Firefox on macOS X.
stesch··on First SpaceX Starlink satellites loaded into Falcon fairing
When there are 12,000 of them deployed wouldn't there be more than one above you all the time? Couldn't the connection from Earth spread the traffic among multiple satellites?
stesch··on Using Altair for most of my visualization in Python
People don't call their programs IBM or Apple.

How about a JavaScript library to extract the second to last character of a string and call in Commodore Amiga 3000?

stesch··on Using Altair for most of my visualization in Python
Expected some interface to an Altair computer and blinking lights.

People don't care anymore how they name their projects. :-(

stesch··on Firefox 66.0.4 is out, fixes disabled add-ons
I enabled it for the bugfix and it made some additional changes to the config that weren't related to the bug fix and not mentioned on about:studies. Changed the behavior of the browser.

Very strange and unsettling.

stesch··on Facebook is redesigning its core app
The design needs a bit more of the typical Facebook blue. People won't recognize it otherwise.
