stephentmcm··on Show HN: Diff.io
O nifty I hadn't seen PhantomCSS before.
stephentmcm··on Show HN: Diff.io
I've half built a tool to do this using PhantomJS, and a really half-baked API. The image grab part is easy. The diffing is what's hard... well sort of.

What I tried and what this site appears to do is a straight pixel change detection, which fails to account for how important that change is. Minor things change on a site all the time it's catching major breaking changes that's hard, say a CSS rule change that looks fine on desktop but ruins the site on mobile.

stephentmcm··on UDP and me
I dressed up as a UDP packet once… I don’t think anyone got it, but I couldn't tell.
stephentmcm··on Why investors don’t fund dating
Couldn't agree more, 'selling' how much fun being in the community is, will be much better at building a brand.

I'd seriously avoid going down the sexy models route, if you're site featured girls in tight tops holding RC 'stuff' on the front page I would have clicked away almost immediately, it cheapens what you're promoting.

Simply using professional photo/video people for imagery will help more than slapping on some tacky model shots.

stephentmcm··on BingoCardCreator.com Sale Page
I don't get it why is this front-page and up voted 30+times?
stephentmcm··on In Defence of WordPress
For Mummy-blogger's site about how awesome her kid is? Probably not the end of the world, expect that now her site is sending spam and hosting malware. You'd be pissed if your neighbour left their house unlocked while they went on holiday and it turned into a crack-den.
stephentmcm··on In Defence of WordPress
And that's the problem they shouldn't be doing that. Hosting a website is not a fun weekend project you get from Target/Walmart as a DIY kit.

People wouldn't be happy if I started building my own car to just drive around where ever I felt like, making it 'easy' and 'safe' to just throw up a website anywhere is an excellent way to get hacked.

stephentmcm··on In Defence of WordPress
Yawn. More excuses for using a big old pile of spaghetti code with no testing or dependency management. Auto-updates? big deal, any decent framework can roll out updates on composer.
stephentmcm··on Show HN: Detective (a “chat” game)
This is actually rather awesome. Is there a robot at any point or is one always connected to another human? As I only ever got impostors. Sadly every time I got to play impostor the detective seemed to time out.
stephentmcm··on A Diet Might Cut the Risk of Developing Alzheimer’s
Not to be a jerk but literally googling your post answers your question...

The answer is yes, what was your point?

stephentmcm··on Show HN: Saulify: Generate clean, responsive articles with just a click
Nice but can you adjust the contrast? All the text on the front page fails WCAG. And the links on the cleaned pages fail as well.
stephentmcm··on Show HN: Crayfish, an open source, shareware newsreader
Interesting licensing choice. So if I download and compile it myself am I still bound to the 30-trial? As my understanding of the MIT license would suggest, no if I compile it myself I'm free to do as I please.
stephentmcm··on Drought-Stricken California Communities Consider Desalination
This is a great idea. Victoria, Australia built one and the drought conditions immediately abated making the entire thing pointless. I'm sure someone here can find a term for describe the sense of 'fate' created by seeing something created to protect against a now non-existent issue.*

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victorian_Desalination_Plant

*I realise Australia as a whole is likely to lapse into drought again and make having a desal plant good but until then it's amusing.

stephentmcm··on NSA Claims Iran Learned from Western Cyberattacks
Horrible click-bait title. Why should we fear Iran? O because we keep kicking them repeatedly?

stephentmcm··on Why Is the Dollar Sign a Letter S?
The forging statement seems rather silly. $20 -> $200 is still a pretty good mark up, plus in cheques or similar paper based money transfers it's normal to have the amount written out in words as well as in numerals.
stephentmcm··on Show HN: Schwarzenegger voiced explainer videos. Do it now!
I'm glad all the terms and conditions are clear... http://www.explainedbyarnold.com/terms-and-conditions/
stephentmcm··on Google Nears $1 Billion Investment in SpaceX
Still free on the new 3g enabled models. But when you say 'free' it only allows you to browse Amazon and buy Amazon books so they just build the costs into those... So thanks to everyone who buys eBooks on Amazon and funds my Kindle DX's 3g connection :)
stephentmcm··on BPA alternative disrupts normal brain-cell growth, study says
Source? This sounds very urban legend. Most stores won't sell it as 'damaged stock' but they also reject many other products based entirely on external appearance regardless of whether they are fit for purpose or not.
stephentmcm··on Game Theorists Crack Poker
Yet another article[1] stated that if playing it's self the bot with the better hands/chance 'won' in the long run.

stephentmcm··on TED Is a God Damn Cult (2013)
I think the fact buzzfeed has a 20 worst TED talks is much more telling than that the editor having written about boobs. Or maybe the fact they have highlights the issue.
stephentmcm··on Show HN: Front-end framework optimized for internal apps
Having worked in places where AS/400 terminals where the norm I'd argue that "non-tech people" don't so much as get the hang of it, as rote learn the system and then moment they step out what they have learnt fail miserably to recover. I've experienced push-back on updates to programs that take a five step process back to one or two simply because the person actually using the software didn't understand what typing the commands did and they weren't will to learn the new method.
stephentmcm··on NYC Rat Map
I'd hazard I guess that it's merely a few people aggressively reporting sightings near their home and that the vast majority of the rat population goes un-reported and is fairly evenly distributed. Unless I'm mistaken and it's only department employees reporting them, which would still have a bias, based on worker personality.
stephentmcm··on Nature makes all articles free to view
So how long until someone writes a web crawler that dumps all the links into a searchable public db?
stephentmcm··on Show HN: Axis - a React.js multiplayer math game
Should probably put a license, readme and maybe some contrib guidelines up.
stephentmcm··on Show HN: JavaScript Battle – A daily artificial intelligence battle
Is there a place to comment on gameplay design? As looking at the current rules, if a 'Coward hero' just sits at a health well hitting it ever turn they can't be killed by a single enemy hero attacking? If I'm reading the rules correctly the attacking hero can hit 10 from 'moving' at the coward and 20 again at turn end for a total of 30, which the coward can heal by simply moving at the well?

Either way cool game/site will give spin up a Hero soon.
