My day job is to download random programs suggested by people I haven't met before, and post "hot takes" about them on the Internet.

Opinions are those of Gilgamech Technologies.

Top 10 Ways To Maximize Anthophilic Output
stephengillie··on What happened when Buffer stopped using Slack on Fridays
The worst part of a synchronous chatroom is repeatedly asking for something you need now - and getting drowned out by irrelevant conversations, other tech chats, and cat gifs. Because you need the PR to finish the ticket and go home. But 2 people who are done for the day are still discussing house siding with a remote dev.
stephengillie··on What happened when Buffer stopped using Slack on Fridays
At a previous job, we had a mandatory policy of creating a new Slack chat room for every incident involving 2 or more engineers. This was before threaded messages. It really, really helped.

And then we started making our own clique chat rooms. Then it became mandatory to not have tech discussions in a clique room.

No, it doesn't make me wonder if anthropic lighting is impacting bee flight. If anything, they can fly later at night.

I got in trouble in high school for reading the Dragon Reborn novels during class. Mostly band class.

Did they use the same Store Closing signs as your local Toys R Us?
stephengillie··on Sears Hires Advisers to Prepare Bankruptcy Filing
A liquidation company buys the assets and sells them - down to the shelves and signs. That's why all the "Store Closing" signs are the same, because the same liquidation company shuts down many companies.

Overlake is an interesting area. Redmond to the east, and the Bellevue Collection to the west. Right along 520, which now needs a toll to cross from Seattle. The store probably had a lot more Seattle traffic before the tolls started. And before Costco and Target opened stores in Seattle. Also the perceived cost of being in Bellevue - I used to prefer shopping in Northgate to Bellevue.

Setting up the H&R Block(head) office inside that Overlake Sears was my first job in IT.

> You could go to the moon with that cash.

Not quite, but you could get low Earth orbit.

To compare, ST3, the light rail project in the Seattle area, is costing about $54 billion. That could take 1 WA State resident to the Moon and back.

I decided not to donate to my college when I saw them moving an entire historical house up a hill. They're a major research university with a $3 billion dollar endowment, a Pac-12 football team, and the largest employer in Washington State after its own government. I'm pretty sure my $100/month has more utility to more people at a food bank, than it would at that school.

We don't want to censor the whole internet, just the parts we don't like. Adblockers do this well.

Money is the force carrier for the value field. Humans exchange value, quantized as money, and the value field is stronger in some areas of our world.

Like any force carrier, they are fungible, and they are constantly being created and annihilated. Banks emit and absorb them strongly, other organizations less so.

stephengillie··on UK cyber security agency backs Apple, Amazon China hack denials
Are you saying the NSA bribed manufacturers in China to add these to boards - so Americans would discover then and accuse the Chinese government of espionage? Is this the stick to the tariff's carrot?

Remember, astronauts couldn't have met aliens on the moon, if the moon landings were faked.

Add a push button transmission to that list. They were a bad idea in the 1960s, and they're still a bad idea today.
stephengillie··on Ask HN: The difference between “overvalued” and “that's how much it is now”?
Value is an expression of utility. "Overvalued" means it's not as useful as you thought.

Either you got a great deal, or you got robbed.

stephengillie··on Denmark to ban petrol and diesel car sales by 2030
These statistics are only possible in a nation that has over 240,000 water mains (or do some break more than once a year?)

A smaller nation can choose a solution that works better at smaller scales, but doesn't scare well - because they don't need it to scale much. A larger empire has fewer options.

stephengillie··on Tesla’s Model 3 Is Becoming One of America’s Best-Selling Sedans
Someone always brings out this argument - that it's acurate in the aviation world.

But that is different from the average human, who expects the autopilot to automatically pilot the car - including stopping at stop lights and for pedestrians.

stephengillie··on Tesla’s Model 3 Is Becoming One of America’s Best-Selling Sedans
The question is - does the price match the utility - does the 60x cost device provide 60x utility?

Were these developers, I'd ask if the $900k developer is 60x better than the $30k administrator.

Were these knives and forks, I could ask YouTube.

stephengillie··on Denmark to ban petrol and diesel car sales by 2030
I think part of the motivation was preventing open rebellion by a hurting voter base. Those were bad years.

Better to have the pollution we know, rather than the unknown pollution from the avreage diesel engine. American buses are 10x cleaner.

stephengillie··on Tesla’s Model 3 Is Becoming One of America’s Best-Selling Sedans
Is a car 60x more useful than a phone? (Honest question, and probably varies by user. Though most cars last longer than most phones.)
