sten··on No Association Between Salt And Blood Pressure, Study Finds
A counter example works only on an absolute statement. He didn't say literally ever skinny person met those criteria, rather:

>Not really. Those skinny people are eating less (in aggregate) than the fat people, again barring some very rare metabolic condition. Guaranteed.

sten··on A Data Analysis Curriculum
Gonna toss my hat in here for the engineering bit. Plenty of programming and math out there, probably owing the the fact that physical material is harder to work with virtually... there doesn't seem to be much quality circuit and low level stuff. The micro-controller class on edx just past being a major exception.
sten··on Jerry Cooperstein gives an "Intro to Linux" course on edX
That's a nice way to frame the real question. Does this adequately signal what we've learned or are other methods like certifications required. I'm sure the people behind edx are looking to push legitimacy as strongly as possible but I believe ultimately any of this will boil down to personal projects and portfolio building.

I'm going to try and get my employer to pay for it either way.

sten··on Review of the First Three Johns Hopkins Coursera Data Science Courses
I find it amazing how many complaints there are on the official forums form these classes. I'm not sure what people were expecting. But equivalent material is available online for people with 2000-4000 dollar price tags.

These classes will always amount to what people can make of them. My expectation from this isn't to become a data scientist, it's simply to improve from where I current am. After I've taken a few more of these I'll try some Kaggle.

My only issue so far has been the quality of lectures in the Inference Class, but even then it's likely worth the time and money invested.

That could apply to any paper. Which honestly makes books even more awesome.
sten··on The Patriot Missile Failure
I hated that book. But couldn't put it down. Looking back it's amazing what he got right, like the darkstar drone system for example. But even more amazing is how much he got wrong, that western government media of the war would be sufficient to overcome local propaganda and cause an over through of the Chinese government in a matter of days.
sten··on Coursera Data Science Certificate
Jeff, I'm signed up for the entire set at the moment. It's just a matter of deciding if I want to pay for it and focus on it or take other classes (MIT is doing a data course as well this spring over with edx). If I can get my employer to pay that'd be better, not because it's expensive but because I perceive that it would be better material to add to my resume if I can say it was work sponsored.

I'd like to know your thoughts on the value of the final capstone project respective to career development?

sten··on FDA: Antibacterial soaps could pose health risks
As an anecdote I gave up antiperspirant and deodorants after suffering rashes and pain in my under arms. I sweat more, but I was surprised to find I actually smell better. Or rather I'm told I smell better. Additionally I discovered that the stains in the underarms of my clothing went away, apparently it's caused by the deodorants. Diet may indeed play a factor, I am vegan. YMMV.
sten··on Free Mathematics Books
I'd use that. I've considered something similar for online classes, but there is no reason why it couldn't be all learning channels.
sten··on Searchable catalog of Udacity, edX, Coursera, etc.
Created an account to test it out. Looks good. But I wasn't able to find Reactive Programming[0] class but I assume new classes are still being loaded and added.

A suggested feature, and one I've considered doing myself, is to have a sort of timeline of classes. So that if I sign up for a class from November to January, and one from December to February, it would show that they overlap during December and January. One of the biggest problems I have is biting off more then I can chew, and what I like to do is visualize each class as a per week load and stack them on top of each other. That way I can find bottle necks where several classes might overlap in the final and beginning weeks leaving me with an expected work load of 30+ hours.

All and all it looks great.

Wow. I had already signed up for it, but this certainly makes it more interesting.
