stemlord··on Epic celebrates "the end of the Apple Tax" after court win in iOS payments case
Agreed, even if solely for sustainability purposes in reducing ewaste
stemlord··on In New York City, congestion pricing leads to marked drop in pollution
This is already underway

stemlord··on Cities panic over having to release mass surveillance recordings

stemlord··on Sued by Nintendo
This doesn't seem exhaustive though I guess I'd be super impressed if it were. For example I watched a pokemon dataset get taken down then go back up under a new name a couple times from huggingface sometime in 2023-24, fairly certain they were getting c&d
stemlord··on YouTube addresses lower view counts which seem to be caused by ad blockers
>You can make content without monetization in mind. But it's like giving your time away.

You're missing the point entirely, the content I refer to as more interesting is stuff people made for fun or on principle not because of financial incentive

Imagine if people only commented on hn because they were expecting a paycheck for it

stemlord··on YouTube addresses lower view counts which seem to be caused by ad blockers
I find it incredibly difficult to shed any sympathy for youtube "content creators". Youtube was most entertaining, or at least most interesting before anyone was monetizing the platform. Same goes for most of thr rest of the web but I digress
stemlord··on US Holocaust museum removes anti-genocide post after being corelatted with Gaza
hacking used to be deeply political but i guess i've come to learn over the past 15 years here that such a label here is just whitewashing for the kind of neoliberal capitalistic selfishness that has fueled modern day sv following the first wave of big tech successes that occurred a lifetime ago now
stemlord··on Speeding up Unreal Editor launch by not spawning unused tooltips
That's extremely unfortunate given that Unity is becoming financially hostile gouging enterprise customers, and apparently Godot is not quite mature enough to compete. Game engines are quickly becoming a problem
stemlord··on CEO pay and stock buybacks have soared at the largest low-wage corporations
>The motivation? A healthy and productive workforce. The greater good.

This is so outrageously naive

stemlord··on Is air travel getting worse?
But we bailed them out during covid
stemlord··on Israeli unit tasked with smearing Gaza journalists as Hamas fighters – report
>They might not raze it to the ground, that would have bad optics, but they’re certainly going to try to make life there unpleasant enough

Did you hit send on this message on Oct 8 and it just went through?

stemlord··on Show HN: Tinder but it's only pictures of my wife and I can only swipe right
There is no such on-screen experience that is good for toddlers, imo
stemlord··on Voting age to be lowered to 16 in UK by next general election
I think this is a good idea, given we now see how selfishly most people vote. If an 80 year old man is going to vote only for his immediate self interest and not even for his own generational legacy, then his vote shouldn't count as much as a 22 year old struggling to establish a sustainable future for themselves.

I was raised to champion the elderly for their life wisdom but it's starting to seem like society has been changing so rapidly that they no longer understand what's actually going on

stemlord··on Ask HN: Worth leaving position over push to adopt vibe coding?
impressive that you're a senior engineer after only 5 years
stemlord··on Marijuana is associated with higher risk of heart attack and stroke

stemlord··on Show HN: Report idling vehicles in NYC (and get a cut of the fines) with AI
Feature request: the ability to report illegally parked police vehicles
stemlord··on Texting myself the weather every day
Yeah on my Android device I use an app called Breezy Weather [1] which shows me the temp, weather, and air quality on my lock screen.

I'd love to figure out how to get an hourly weather widget on the lock screen though.

stemlord··on Getting Past Procrastination
ADHD is so stigmatized now that you cannot with a straight face tell someone "I have ADD" without getting an eye roll, unfortunately. many won't believe you were correctly diagnosed

I've also found that there's no real cure for it. You can take the meds but they'll chip away at your personality and health in other ways.

stemlord··on Amazon's Vulcan Robots Now Stow Items Faster Than Humans
i think at least one unemployable generation of low skill workers will be sacrificed before this kind of thing becomes good news
stemlord··on Migrating away from Rust
Unity is predatorial. I work in a small studio which is part of a larger company (only 5 of us use Unity) and they have suddenly decided to hold our accounts hostage until we upgrade to Industry license because of the revenue our parent company makes even though that's completely separate cash flow versus what our studio actually works with. Industry license is $5000 PER SEAT PER YEAR. Absolute batshit crazy expensive for a single piece of software. We will never be able to afford that. So we are switching over to Unreal. It's really sad what Unity has become.
stemlord··on Belgian teens arrested with 5k smuggled ants
Sorry I wasn't able to extrapolate the answer from even that sentence lol
stemlord··on Belgian teens arrested with 5k smuggled ants
But why are people trafficking ants specifically? What do people want out of them?
stemlord··on Harvard's response to federal government letter demanding changes
It's my understanding that the issue is not that they're "espousing the right views" but rather that they have the constitutional right as a private institution to espouse whatever views their students and faculty want under the first amendment.
stemlord··on Small Town America vs. Big Box Stores
Seemed pretty clear to me: they not only don't pay nearly as much in taxes as local businesses but are subsidized by local taxpayers
stemlord··on Senior Developer Skills in the AI Age
Right, and the reason why professional developers are writing worse code out there is most likely because they simply don't have the time/aren't paid to care more about it. The LLM is then mildly improving the output in this brand of common real world scenario
stemlord··on Apple restricts Pebble from being awesome with iPhones
And I'll be the contra to your take: the iMessage ecosystem is so closed that everyone without iphones can barely even interact via sms with iphone users. This is overall such a huge problem that it makes the closed ecosystem security solution not a practical solution
