stefanvdw1··on Why do we need human mathematicians anymore?
And many people ceed control of their flying to an airplane.

Do you think the people using a seeing-eye-dog do this voluntarily over using their own eyes?

stefanvdw1··on Using jq to format JSON on the clipboard
Not mine, just very useful
stefanvdw1··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
Otus Analytics. An EU based (and full EU stack) Google Analytics/Adobe Analytics/etc. alternative. It integrates with Mistral so that you can chat about your website traffic as if you are talking to a web analyst. It also does automated weekly reports. You can go full cookieless (plausible style) or enable cookies if they you need return visitor insights (more conventional analytics style).

stefanvdw1··on All phones sold in the EU to have replaceable batteries from 2027
Having a higher price is an incentive to using the phone you have a bit longer by replacing the battery. It’s certainly better than having them be guaranteed e-waste.
stefanvdw1··on State of marketplaces: ChatGPT output directly used in tiles and descriptions
We already knew marketplaces were being overrun by automated dropshippers, but it now has become blatantly obvious.

Seems even worse on the Dutch equivalent of Amazon. If you search for:

site:bol.com "hier is een verbeterde versie van"

You'll find even more examples.

stefanvdw1··on Ultra high-resolution image of The Night Watch (2022)
I’ve built a website which will show you a random object from the massive Rijksmuseum collection. Always nice to find something you’ve never seen before!

stefanvdw1··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
I got tired of all the pop-up’s, long stories and accounts needed on cooking sites so I’m building a web app that helps you organize all your favorite online recipes in one place.

It also helps you discover new recipes that other users have saved.

stefanvdw1··on The Getty makes nearly 88k art images free to use
Thanks! Some of the artworks have the colors as part of their metadata, so I directly use those.

For a different project I’m looking in into using k-means to determine the dominant colors.

stefanvdw1··on The Getty makes nearly 88k art images free to use
Nice! I love using high quality images of art for some of my personal projects. Might built something similar with these like I did for the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam[1].

stefanvdw1··on Rocket – Simple, Fast, Type-Safe Web Framework for Rust
Never thought I would see the release of v0.5. Congrats to all the maintainers!

Can’t wait to play with this!

stefanvdw1··on Show HN: Oyie – A micro social app to stay in sync with your friends
Looks fun! And always nice to be able to grab the handle you want when you are one of the first to join
stefanvdw1··on Obsidian 1.4.10 Desktop (Public)
Also check out the Tasks plugin and the query language it comes with. Obsidian has become my one tool for so many things at this point!
stefanvdw1··on Ask HN: Tell us about your project that's not done yet but you want feedback on
https://eatfeed.app

If you are like me you have a list of links to recipes on different websites. Maintaining this becomes a hassles and makes it hard to plan your week.

This website scrapes the recipes and saves them in a database, ensuring you aren’t reliant on the original website anymore. Useful if they decide to delete the recipe or disappear altogether.

stefanvdw1··on Ask HN: What's the coolest physical thing you've made?
Love your videos, already excited for the next one!
stefanvdw1··on Enhance – HTML-first full stack web framework
Unrelated but how do you like zeabur? Looks interesting but haven’t heard anything about it yet
stefanvdw1··on Show HN: Workout.lol – a web app to easily create a workout routine
It seems you have to click on the next step in the stepper above. But I agree that a “next” button would make more sense
stefanvdw1··on Hacker News needs a Dark Mode
If you don’t mind using an alternative front-end, I’ve built an open source one[0] that supports dark mode and some other things I was missing when using HN on larger screens

stefanvdw1··on Show HN: Hacker News user experience enhancement browser extension
I like it!

I went a step further and made my own client[0] so that it’s easier to navigate on larger screens and mobile, but could not find a good solution to support logging in. An extension is a great middle ground.

stefanvdw1··on Introducing ChatGPT and Whisper APIs
What business are you building?
stefanvdw1··on Apple is convinced my dog is stalking me
I found that turning of Bluetooth causes the beeping. I have it turned on and haven’t heard them in ages
stefanvdw1··on Show HN: New AI edits images based on text instructions
That is a common request when working with clients. They have a hard time describing what they want so end up asking to “make it pop”
stefanvdw1··on Show HN: Self-hosted CMS on serverless Cloudflare
I would argue that using something like Nuxt/Content[0]is even simpler. I create a new markdown file in my website’s local repo, write the content and commit if it’s ready for publishing. No need for the FTP step and version control is build in.

This setup is also completely free since the content lives on GitHub and my static site on render.com (but any static site hosting will work).

And since it’s Nuxt based, it automatically also supports more advanced features such as tagging, advanced queries and filtering.

Can only recommend it!

stefanvdw1··on Ask HN: What is the cheapest, easiest way to host a cronjob in 2022?
Because not everyone has a pc/home server they can just leave on 24/7
stefanvdw1··on Show HN: I built a Hacker News userscript to make this site more legible
Nice!

Felt the same way but took it a step further and designed a whole new front-end[0] so that it was easier to use on modern large format screens (and added some things like dark mode).

stefanvdw1··on The Terminal for the 21st Century
Have been using it daily for about a year now together with zag and starship and absolutely love it!

Fast, easy to use and remembers commands from previous sessions which has been incredibly useful a number of times

stefanvdw1··on Qatar World Cup ambassador says homosexuality is 'damage in the mind'
If you need to be convinced that mistreating people is wrong there is no point arguing.

The fact that decades ago something was considered wrong, and since has been accepted, makes it no excuse for it to be considered wrong today.

And no, the morality and understanding of the world should not be pinned to the Anglo-sphere, but the west just happens to be the most progressive in terms of human rights at this moment in history. If Quatar wants to take the lead and ask all other countries to follow, by all means.

stefanvdw1··on Qatar World Cup ambassador says homosexuality is 'damage in the mind'
What conversation are you trying to start exactly?

That there is some god who is the only one who can judge if something is right or wrong? And that whole countries can hide behind this?

It’s pretty clear what “problematic” is, no? The mistreatment of whole subgroups based on their gender or sexuality in Quatar is objectively wrong, or as you would like it defined: Problematic.

stefanvdw1··on A crash dummy aimed at protecting women drivers
